The purpose of this thesis is to trace the history and development of scenery, costumes, lighting, and general stage equipment from the earliest drama in England to the year 1700. The drama had its ultimate origin in the services of the Church and it is from this religious drama of the Middle Ages that our modern theatre developed. At first the clergy dramatized parts of the simple Bible stories in the chancel during the Church service. Schizophrenia (SCZ) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are psychiatric diseases with complex inheritance. Genetic studies have not identified susceptibility genes to adequately explain the heritability and the etiology of these diseases is largely unknown.We identified susceptibility genes enriched for de novo mutations (DNMs) in at least two independent whole exome sequencing (WES) publications. Genes associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HC) were used as control genes. We selected for rare inherited and DNMs in the ASD network using a WES dataset (2392 ASD families) and in the SCZ network using three independent WES datasets (35 trios; 598 trios; 5090 case controls). Background: In Canada, the United States of America (U.S.A), and many other regions world-wide, more and more people are dying of prescription opioid analgesic (POA) overdose death. The death rate from POA overdose has quadrupled in the U.S.A. since 1999 and tripled in Ontario. These pharmaceuticals remain useful and important tools in the practice of medicine, although many have suggested changes to prescribing behavior should be among the intervention strategies to curb this epidemic. Repeating an arm movement has been shown to result in complex reorganization in the activity across the arm and the trunk musculature leading to changes in whole body coordination. Yet, the relationship between fatigue, arm movement and postural control is poorly understood. As such, the primary aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of upper limb repetitive motion-fatigue on the control of posture and movement. The solubility of UO2 solid and the speciation of U(IV) in fluoride-bearing aqueous fluids were investigated experimentally at a temperature of 200 °C and vapour-saturated water pressure. Oxygen fugacity was controlled by the hematite-magnetite buffer to ensure that it was below that of the UO3/UO2 equilibrium boundary and that dissolved uranium was dominantly as U(IV). The experiments were performed at a fluoride activity ranging from 1.6x10-7 to 0.17 m and pH values from 2.1 to 7.5. The concentration of dissolved uranium increased with decreasing pH and increasing fluoride activity from about 1.28x10-5 to 2.32x10-3 m, suggesting that H+ and F- …  Lire la suite

Bone marrow continuously produces many B lymphocytes but the homeostatic mechanisms regulating this process are unknown. Two possible factors, the size of the B lymphocyte pool and antigenic stimulation, were examined, using radioautographic DNA-labeling with ('3)H-thymidine to quantitate lymphocyte turnover. In mice injected with anti-IgM antibodies from birth to delete all surface IgM-bearing B lymphocytes the rate of production of small lymphocytes per femur was indistinguishable from controls. In contrast, an injection of sheep erythrocytes (SRBC) in normal mice produced a transient increase in small lymphocyte turnover and increased numbers of both of immature B cells and of null small …  Lire la suite

The rule-following problem can be condensed into the paradox that a rule cannot determine any course of action because every course of action can be made to accord with that rule. In his Wittgenstein on Rules and Private Language, Saul Kripke sees this paradox as potentially leading to a radical semantic scepticism that renders meaning itself meaningless, and attributes a sceptical solution of the problem to Wittgenstein. This program was implemented to address the growing incidence of violence and conflict within MAASB high schools. Treatment of the critically ill patient, however, now requires assimilating large amounts of patient data. Computers can help by processing the data and displaying the information in easy to understand formats. Also, knowledge-based systems can provide advice in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Images from high resolution brain positron emission tomography (PET) scanners (CTI/Siemens HRRT) can measure differences in neuroreceptor concentrations in the gray matter that are related to cytoarchitectonic differences. However, the loss of resolution due to the PET imaging process results in partial-volume effects (PVE) that obscure the true radiotracer distribution. Although several partial-volume correction algorithms exist, these frequently require severely limiting assumptions. We developed a new iterative deconvolution algorithm for the partial-volume correction of PET images that aims to overcome the limitations of previous methods. We investigated the role of metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs), and related intracellular second messengers, in the development of morphine tolerance and dependence. The mGluRs are divided into three groups: group I mGluRs are positively coupled to phosphatidylinositol (PI) hydrolysis, while group II and III mGluRs are negatively coupled to cyclic adensoine-3$ sp prime$,5$ sp prime$-monophosphate (cAMP) production. Opioid receptors are also coupled to these same systems, and have been shown to elicit changes in these messenger systems during chronic treatment. It was hypothesized that a metabolite of morphine, morphine-3-glucuronide (M3G), contributes to the expression of symptoms seen during withdrawal from morphine. To test this hypothesis, the behaviors observed during precipitated withdrawal from morphine and sufentanil were compared. Sufentanil was chosen because, like morphine, it acts primarily at the mu opioid receptor, but has different metabolites. Differences in the abstinence syndromes produced by the two drugs may therefore be attributable to the actions of metabolites, rather than the primary opioid actions of morphine and sufentanil. This thesis examines the idea of conjunctive housing as a viable alternative for habitation within the urban context. It traces the historical origins of housing in conjunctive use with other functions. Various examples of this type of housing are cited extending from its beginnings during the classical era right up to the twentieth century. The study of the mixed land use concept in urban areas calls for a more comprehensive analysis of the validity of conjunctive housing as an alternative to the ever increasing suburbanization. Rare earth elements (REE), which include the lanthanide series, yttrium and scandium, are considered to be strategic resources for the development of modern society because of their unique properties, which makes them essential for the global energy transition. Iron-oxide-apatite-type deposits are potentially important sources of REE, which are exemplified by the Kwyjibo deposit (Québec, Canada) that hosts measured/indicated resources of 6.92 million tons, grading 2.72 % total rare earth oxides, of which 33 % are heavy REE. Mitochondria generate the majority of cellular energy through oxidative phosphorlyation. The machinery of oxidative phosphroylation consists of five enzyme complexes that are located in the inner mitochondrial membrane. A small number of essential subunits in these complexes are encoded by mtDNA and synthesized on a dedicated mitochondrial translation apparatus. Defects in mitochondrial translation system cause many mitochondrial diseases, but the mechanisms that regulate mitochondrial translation remain largely unknown. We have identified an unnamed human protein C7orf30, as a possible mitochondrial translation factor. The orthologue of C7orf30 in maize is thought to be a chloroplast ribosome assembly factor. The lower limb electromyographic (EMG) patterns of 5 normal and 8 spastic paretic subjects during walking were compared. A dynamic EMG profile index, proposed to quantify spastic locomotor dysfunction, was found to be homogeneously low in normal subjects and abnormally high in spastic subjects. In another study, the normally phase-dependent modulation of the soleus H-reflex during walking was found to be decreased or absent in 21 spastic paretic subjects, suggesting the possibility of defective reflex gating mechanisms. Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most malignant and common adult brain cancer of glial cell origin (glioma). Despite advanced treatment therapies, the median survival of GBM patients remains less than two years due to therapeutic resistance and cancer recurrence after surgery. GBM displays a cellular complexity consisting of a hierarchy of poorly differentiated neural cells, including brain tumour-initiating cells (BTICs). Since BTICs are the proposed culprit of the growth, and possibly recurrence, of GBM, this particular subpopulation of cells is considered an attractive GBM therapeutic target. Objective. To evaluate the caries experience of people with Down syndrome (DS) compared to people without DS. Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted. The caries experience was assessed by a crude DMFT score and an adjusted DFT score expressed as a percentage of caries-affected teeth to compensate for hypodontia in the DS group. Multiple logistic and linear regressions were used to compare the outcomes of both groups, controlling for all predictors. Results. This research investigates whether, and how, students in a circus bachelor programme learned creativity during their studies, and how they use creativity in their profession. Twelve participants were interviewed, representing six different cohorts from the University of Dance and Circus (DOCH) in Stockholm, Sweden between 2008-2018 (now Stockholm University of the Arts). Constructivist grounded theory methodology (CGT) guided the analytical process of uncovering themes described by participants. Narrative vignettes were used to represent the experiences recounted by multiple participants influencing the apprenticeship of creativity and creative methods. Blood vessels convert arachidonic acid to prostacyclin (PGI(,2)), which is a potent inhibitor of platelet aggregation and thrombus formation. Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) or their hydroperoxy metabolites can cause a reduction in PGI(,2) production. Therefore, in the present study, the metabolism of PUFA and their effects on PGI(,2) production have been investigated. Linoleic acid is converted by aorta to hydroperoxy metabolites, which are either dehydrated to oxo compounds, reduced to monohydroxy products, or converted to epoxyhydroxy-octadecenoic acids. This thesis investigates descent for the 2-fibration of cocomplete categories over toposes and geometric morphisms. Change of base within this 2-fibration is given by the left adjoint to the restriction functor. Pitts' pullback theorem (Pi) is important to descent in this context, and a new and more natural proof of it is obtained. As in (Pi), the proof herein depends on Pare's (P2) results on generated topologies. The present context is 2-categorical, and an abstract 2-descent theorem is obtained. If the molecule is electrically asymmetric, it will tend to be oriented in an external electric field. The extent of this orientation can be determined experimentally by measuring the dielectric constant of the material. Substances having high dielectric constants are known to possess large permanent electric moments on the molecular scale. There exists no adequate objective measure of vestibular function and consequently clinicians cannot easily estimate degree of vestibular dysfunction or dizziness. This study aimed to evaluate new objective measures of vestibular function by determining (1) how these measures relate to subjective clinical estimates of vestibular function and (2) whether these measures can identify patients with true vestibular dizziness. Caregiving for two parents affected by chronic dementia was the original impetus for this study. My negative experiences led to a quest for insight and solutions through volunteer, professional and academic pursuits. It culminated in this exploration of caregivers' experiences and their decision-making to expose the educational support they need. Caregivers tend to be family members, and overwhelmingly women. Studies from various disciplines confirm that caregivers need educational support to make decisions. Tyrosine, DOPA, DOPamine and N-acetyl DOPamine have been identified as the only phenolic substances occurring in the eggs or the house cricket, Acheta domesticus (L.). This is the first report or 2-diphenols in insect eggs known to the author. The quantitative variation and histochemical location of these substances indicate that they are involved in the formation of the serosal cuticle. N-acetyl DOPamine is probably the precursor of the quinone which tans the serosal epicuticle at the end or water absorption. Les nanoparticules d'or ultraminiaturisées conjuguées à la doxorubicine, un médicament chimiothérapeutique d'emploi courant pouvant donner des effets secondaires néfastes, ont démontré des propriétés prometteuses pour le traitement des mélanomes autant in vitro que in vivo. Ces nanoparticules ont été conçues pour améliorer la solubilité des médicaments, pour limiter la libération de la doxorubicine avant d'arriver aux cellules, et pour aider à surmonter la multirésistance aux médicaments. Spectroscopy is continually growing in importance as a tool in the determination of the kinetics and in the elucidation of the mechanisms of reactions. In particular, spectroscopy can be applied to reactions involving chemiluminescence in the visible and infrared regions. This thesis is concerned with two reactions of ozone. The first reaction, ozone with nitric oxide, forms an excited N02 molecule which is chemiluminescent.
