1987 — The conflict of the lyric hero and reality in the poetic world of Tsvetaeva = Konflikt liricheskogo geroi︠a︡ i deĭstvitelʹnosti v poėticheskom mire T︠S︡vetaevoĭRésumé
The study has two main aims: it presents an overview of Tsvetaeva's poetic world and it analyses one of her major themes, that of the conflict between the lyric hero and reality. Close reading of Tsvetaeva's entire oeuvre reveals a system of invariant themes, motifs and their concrete manifestations; this system is hierarchically organized. The study describes the structure of Tsvetaeva's artistic universe: its mutually opposed worlds ("this", non-authentic, and "the other", authentic) and its different types of characters. Particular attention is given to the peculiarities of Tsvetaeva's lyric hero, notably intensity, the "two-fold nature", and the predilection for conflict. … Lire la suite

1969 — The deterioration of bituminous concrete pavement due to jet fuel spillageRésumé
Studies of the effects of jet fuel spillage on samples of bituminous concrete pavements are reported. Test samples were made from binders of asphalt, tar and blends of asphalt and tar. All binders were rubberized by adding varying quantities of nitrile, styrene and natural rubber. Changes in Marshall stability and flow values resulting from exposure to fuel were measured, relative to unexposed control specimens. Tar concrete mixes proved to be the most resistant to jet fuel attack, while the temperature history of the test specimens was shown to be an important factor. Measured glass transition temperatures obtained from DTA studies … Lire la suite

2005 — Transposon-mediated gene diversificationRésumé
Transposons are mobile genetic elements that have the potential to cause mutations as a result of different aspects of their life cycle. Because most of these mutations are detrimental and due to a selfish life cycle seemingly aiming at increasing their numbers, transposons have been regarded as "junk" DNA that contributes no evolutionary function to the host organism. In this thesis, I argue that although most of the transposon-induced mutations are detrimental, some may lead to benefits for the host and become adaptive. I discuss recent evidence from the literature that points to several mechanisms by which transposons and transposon … Lire la suite

2013 — Fate and transport of agricultural herbicides and veterinary antibiotics in the presence of a non ionic surfactantRésumé
Many parts of the world, and especially developing countries, are experiencing severe water shortage problems. This is causing increased use of untreated or partially-treated wastewater for irrigation. Consequently, many pollutants such as surfactants, present in wastewaters, could influence fate and transport of agricultural chemicals in soils. Therefore, a field lysimeter study was undertaken to investigate the effect of non-ionic surfactant, Brij 35, on the fate and transport of two commonly used antibiotics, oxytetracycline (OTC) and monensin (MON), and an herbicide, metribuzin. Twenty seven PVC lysimeters, 1.0 m long x 0.45 m diameter, were packed with a sandy soil to a … Lire la suite

2006 — Satisfied-user based capacity analysis in wideband and multi-carrier CDMA cellular networksRésumé
Future generations of cellular networks envision unprecedented growth in capacity requirements essential to handle the tremendous evolution of multimedia services. Code division multiple access (CDMA) has been one of the premium candidates to lead the charge in supporting packetized multimedia traffic within mobile cellular networks. This dissertation presents an analytical framework to derive system capacity of CDMA-based cellular networks on the basis of the satisfied-user criteria recommended by universal mobile telecommunications systems (UMTS). The proposed criteria stretch beyond system-level outage probability that has been commonly adopted in the CDMA literature and proceed to focus on evaluating the percentage of outage … Lire la suite

2022 — Individual differences in context memory performance and functional brain activity: The role of educational attainment and crystallized intelligence.Résumé

2014 — Interactions of atmospheric gaseous pollutants on magnetite nanoparticlesRésumé
Heterogeneous reactions between particles and gases are fundamental for pollution remediation and for the understanding of atmospheric reactions. Magnetite, Fe3O4, is a reactive surface for remediation and, as a component of urban particles, for interaction with polluting atmospheric gases, e.g., benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX). Heterogeneous reactions between atmospheric gases and particles influence aerosol-cloud interactions and aerosol nucleation, which constitute a major source of uncertainty affecting climate change. This thesis reports on the fundamental reactions of toluene, a model compound for BTEX, and Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs), under environmental conditions, which include the presence of NO2 and relative humidity. 1927 — Experimental anaemia.Résumé
The experiments described in this Thesis arose out of work begun in collaboration with Professor John Tait in which particles of quartz were injected into the circulating blood of rabbits in connection with a study of platelets and of blood coagulation. During the course of these experiments the writer found that nucleated red cells appear in the circulation as a result of injection. Since quartz is practically insoluble the writer began to investigate the effect of particulate matter in general upon the red cell content of the blood, particularly in relation to the haemolyto-poietic function of the reticuloendothelial system. 1964 — Yield responses of oats to fertilizer nitrogen as influenced by certain nitrogen fractions in selected Quebec soils.Résumé
Soil nitrogen is important from an agronomic viewpoint, because nitrogen is essential in the synthesis of complex organic substances such as proteins, which are an important source of food for man and feed for animals. The total nitrogen present in most soils is relatively small, and is constantly undergoing many transformations, both chemical and microbiological. However, only a significantly small fraction of the total soil nitrogen is in a form that is available to plants. The ease with which available inorganic nitrogen compounds may be lost from the soil through leaching, erosion and crop removal is an indication of the … Lire la suite

This research study provides the experimental information necessary for numerical analyses, structured to account for vadose zone transport of heavy metals. Particular attention is payed to the effect of degree of saturation, the presence of carbonate, soil pH and heavy metals concentrations. In addition, attention is directed to an evaluation of the coupled solute-water transport mechanisms. A method that fully describes the coupling effects on the transport coefficient based on experimental evidence provides successful predictions of the rate of transport of the heavy metals through the unsaturated soil in a pH-controlled environment. In the experimental part of this research, one … Lire la suite

2014 — Regulation of human growth hormone receptor expression by micrornas in HEK293 cellsRésumé
The pleiotropic actions of human growth hormone (GH) result from its binding to its receptor (GHR) on target cells and the downstream activation of multiple intracellular signaling pathways, leading to changes in gene expression, differentiation and metabolic activity. Previous studies have associated GHR deficiency with growth disorders while GHR overexpression occurs in a wide variety of cancers, suggesting the need to have tight regulation of the GHR gene. Studies of what regulates GHR expression at the 5'UTR (promoter) and coding regions have been reported; however, investigations of regulation at the 3'UTR, particularly by microRNAs (miRNAs), has been overlooked. MiRNAs are … Lire la suite

2006 — Proteomic characterization of stress responses activated upon ischemia and reperfusion during human liver transplantationRésumé
During liver transplantation, donor organs experience some degree of cold ischemia/reperfusion injury (IRI). The magnitude of this preservation injury is critical for transplantation outcome since it influences the allograft early function. However, the multifactorial and complex cellular response initiated upon IRI remains unclear. Herein, we used liver biopsies collected during the early phases of organ procurement and transplantation to characterize the global patterns of protein expression and phosphorylation in order to identify new regulatory mechanisms involved in ischemia-induced graft damage. First, a targeted functional proteomic approach, which combined protein expression profiling and mass spectrometry phosphoproteins analysis, allowed us to identify … Lire la suite

1995 — Porosity formation in Sr-modified Al-Si alloysRésumé
Modification of the eutectic silicon in Al-Si foundry alloys by adding strontium is accompanied by an increase of porosity in the casting. This effect on porosity is due to an increase in both the pore size and the pore number density. In an attempt to understand the nature of this problem, the effect of strontium on the probable causes for porosity occurrence due to modification has been investigated. Experimental findings indicate that the addition of strontium to Al-Si alloys increases the volumetric shrinkage due to an increase in solid density, and at the same time reduces the surface tension and … Lire la suite

2021 — Towards the common-sense understanding of text: Results, resources and retrospectionRésumé
The proliferation of artificial-intelligence technologies that interact with human users (e.g., dialogue systems, recommendation systems, information retrieval tools) has led to renewed interest in common-sense reasoning (CSR). The progress of these technologies and the general societal reaction toward them greatly depend on advances in CSR, since systems can seem strikingly unintelligent when they lack common sense. Throughout the last decade, various tasks that test systems’ grasp of common sense have gained notoriety, a few of which include the Winograd Schema Challenge (WSC), the Choice of Plausible Alternatives (COPA), and SWAG. While recent studies have significantly improved the state of the … Lire la suite

1993 — A practical interprocedural alias analysis for an optimizing/parallelizing C compiler /Résumé
Accurate alias analysis is a crucial phase of optimizing/parallelizing compilers for languages which support pointer data structures. The result of the alias analysis is used by most of data-flow analyses and optimizing phases in a compiler to produce efficient code. In this thesis, we introduced a new approach for interprocedural alias analysis which determines the explicit points-to relationships between locations in an abstract stack at each program point. Two variables have a points-to relationship if one of them points, or may point, to the other one. To perform our interprocedural analysis, we have designed a new representation to capture the … Lire la suite

1962 — The unity of Gulliver’s Travels.Résumé
Swift's satire of contemporary eighteenth century politics in Gulliver's Travels no doubt made the book more interesting to its first readers; it has certainly been the object of untiring investigation in the twentieth century. 1999 — Anatomy of a failed democratic transition : the case of Nigeria, 1985-1993Résumé
This study is about the vicissitudes of democratisation in the context of neo-patrimonialism. It examines the aborted transition to democracy in Nigeria (1985--1993) by critically adopting the arguments proffered in the 'new institutionalism' literature. The key insight of the 'new institutionalism' approaches is that they neither privilege structures nor human agency. Instead they seek to explicate how pre-existing institutions and rules shape the choices of political actors. To this end, the 'new institutionalism' approaches lend themselves to a more comprehensive understanding of the processes of regime change. The annulment of 1993, and the country's continuous failure to establish a viable … Lire la suite

2021 — Strings, effective theories, and the cosmological constantRésumé
In this thesis we study the feasibility of realizing scale-separated compactifications of type IIB string theory to four-dimensional Anti-de Sitter or de Sitter space, the latter in particular being important for string theoretic approaches to cosmology, while maintaining a controlled effective theory description. We start by presenting the necessary elements of string theory and reviewing the existing proposals for constructing such compactifications as well as the challenges they face. We then present an approach to determining the regime of validity of an effective field theory description, using notions from asymptotic analysis. Combined with string theory's lack of dimensionless parameters, this … Lire la suite

AbstractIn their Self-Determination Theory (SDT), Deci and Ryan (1985) posit autonomy, competence, and relatedness as three intrinsic needs that contribute to well-being throughout the lifespan. Addressing the argument that the universality with which SDT makes its predictions may ignore critical developmental differences, Ryan and Deci (2000) contend that although these three needs are developmentally persistent, their relative salience may in fact vary across the lifespan. This became apparent with the finding that fulfillment of some needs was inconsequential in the prediction of depressive symptoms in a sample of children and that the experience of a balance of overall need satisfaction … Lire la suite
