Plato of old seemed to consider the principles of the sciences, even of mathematics, as hypotheses in the literal sense of the word, of which dialectic had to establish the intelligibility. A study on the evolution of a part of Aristotle’s thought has, and it is a sign of its imperfection, to make use of hypotheses, built, though, on a great deal of painstaking and sometimes extremely hard research-work.
