2015 — Convergence and Comparison Theorems for Various Splittings of Matrices Based on Generalized Inverses
    Résumé

The convergence of iterative methods for numerically solving the linear systems of equations associated with different types of splittings has been well studied in the literature. In this dissertation, we define new types of splittings based on generalized inverses (Moore-Penrose inverse, Drazin inverse, Group inverse) and present convergence results based on those splittings, namely, Weak Nonnegative Proper Splitting, Proper Regular Splitting, Index Proper Regular Splitting, Weak Nonnegative Index Proper Splitting, Group Proper Regular Splitting, and Weak Nonnegative Group Proper Splitting. We also present some new comparison theorems between the spectral radii of matrices, which are useful in the analysis of …  Lire la suite

2015 — Terrorism Turned Monstrous: An Examination of Post-9/11 Science-Fiction-Horror Films Adapted from Pre-9/11 Source Texts
    Résumé

This thesis explores three post-9/11 film adaptations, War of the Worlds (2005), I Am Legend (2007), and The Mist (2007), in an attempt to better understand societal influences on the adaptation process by examining the alterations that a literary adaptation prepared to go to film undergoes in order to suit a contemporary audience. The ways in which we negotiate cultural trauma are not direct and it may take time and mediation in order for the trauma to be healed. This thesis argues that mediation of the cultural trauma associated with 9/11 is directly connected to Hollywood blockbuster science fiction and …  Lire la suite

    2015 — Studies on Syntheses of 1-Azaspirocycles, 2,6-Disubstituted 3-Piperidinols and cls-Decahydroquinolines
    Résumé

Pyrrolidines and piperidines bearing a nitrogen-substituted quaternary stereocenter are commonly encountered structural motifs in many naturally occurring alkaloids, and therefore development of methods for their synthesis are important. The Rh(II)-catalyzed intramolecular tertiary C-H insertion reaction of 5-(-diazoacetoxy)piperidin-2-ones and 3-(-diazoacetoxy)pyrrolidines carrying C6 and C2 alkyl substituents, respectively, was investigated for the formation of bicyclic lactones bearing a nitrogen-substituted quaternary stereocenter. Both Rh(II)-carboxylate and Rh(II)-carboxamidate catalysts with varying electronic and steric properties were examined; however, these reactions usually resulted in the formation of complex mixture of products and the desired tertiary CH insertion products were not formed. The steric interactions encountered by …  Lire la suite

2015 — Purchasing Fear: Analyzing Cold War Ideologies in Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds
    Résumé

During the Cold War Americans were inundated with talk of atomic weapons, attacks, communist spies, and alleged “contamination.” It is a commonplace that films offered an escape from this repetitive flood of fear and indoctrination. However, upon examination, Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963) appears to have intensified Cold War fears and anxieties, rather than pacifying them. This thesis focuses on depictions of Cold War imagery represented in The Birds. The film’s imagery will be dissected and examined through semiotic analysis, in an attempt to expose the film’s Cold War imagery that threatened Americans and American ideals. While Hitchcock sought favorable …  Lire la suite

Numerical simulation methodologies have become a major approach for solving hydrodynamics problems over the past few decades. Due to their flexibility and adaptability, these methods can be employed in various subjects of engineering and science. These simulations are capable of providing the required knowledge to interpret the natural phenomena and as well can be an alternative means to study the theories and experiments. Numerical modeling of fluid flow can be categorized into two major approaches, mesh-based methods and mesh-free methods. Mesh-based methods used to be the dominant methods through the decades but their lack of success in the precise simulation …  Lire la suite

2015 — Verses at the Burning of the World: Modernism as a Fulfillment of Decadent Ideals
    Résumé

This thesis studies the transition between Decadent and Modernist poetry in England. The general critical perspectives of the evolution between the fin-de-siècle poetry of the 1890s and the high-Modernist verse of the 1920s were either of too great a separation, or too much a continuation. This study suggests that the Decadents were in fact precursors of the Modernists in their attempts to both stylistically and substantively challenge the dominant modes of poetry, its publication, and its relationship with the reading public in the face of the continued and exponential growth of industrialization, urbanization, commercialization, and other perceived consequences of modernity. …  Lire la suite

2015 — Leisure Spaces and leisure Constraints for Lesbian Women
    Résumé

Researchers have argued that leisure and leisure spaces are gendered, differentiating men and women in their opportunities for and outcomes of leisure (e.g., Aitchison, 1999; Henderson & Shaw, 2006). Gender expectations generate leisure constraints especially for women (Shaw et al., 1991). Furthermore, within the female group, lesbians face additional constraints because of the intersection of sexism with homophobia (Pritchard et al., 2002; Taylor, 2007). In 2011, I conducted an online pilot study with a sample of 813 lesbians which suggested that for most participants, self-consciousness and fear of harassment prevented them from fully enjoying their leisure in public spaces. 2015 — Assessing Value in Upstream Health Interventions: A Case Study of the Dr. Paul Schwann Centre Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
    Résumé

In the past several decades, a major ideological shift has occurred regarding the relative importance of broad socioeconomic factors as determinants of health over access to conventional health services. During this time, public health experts have continually re-emphasized the need to focus attention further “upstream” of disease, in order to prevent populations from developing poor health. While provincial health systems currently integrate some population and public health programming within the basket of services they offer, upstream health interventions represent only a very small proportion. While many factors can explain this pattern, one explanation is key; upstream health interventions must compete …  Lire la suite

2015 — Chloride Salts Removal by non Planted Constructed Wetlands Receiving Synthetic Brines from Belle Plaine Potash Mining
    Résumé

Four pilot-scale constructed wetlands (CWs) were employed to study the fate and transport of the two dominant chloride salts (NaCl and KCl) receiving the synthetic brine. The characteristics of the brine solution are made up with a 10:1 concentration ratio between NaCl and KCl based on data obtained from Belle Plaine potash mine site. The multi-layer soils were designed to function as a main salt filtering component comprising of Regina Clay (grain size <0.002 mm), Brick Sand (grain size <4.75 mm) and sharp gravels (grain size between 6.3-19.1 mm) despite the clay layers contained a poor compact condition (Db =1.4, <1.6 g/cm3). The volume of void space in the compacted clay was reduced to approximately half the natural state following application of pressure (4,505 cm3 to 2,743 cm3). The CW systems were operated by the 16-day format (batch 1-3) and the 4-day format (batch 4). During the 16-day format experiments, the best K+ removal rate was recorded on Cell2 as 92.1±63.4% (4.6±5.3mg/l) while Cell 4 contributed the maximum removal of Na+ and Cl- as 44.8±76.7% (53.2±92.4mg/l) and 50.5±109.6% (85.3±184.3.4mg/l). In the 4-day format operation, the chloride breakthrough curve was discovered in all treatment CW cells, excluding the control. Moreover, the curve stated at less than 6 hours (C/C0 > 0.05) and approximately reached the break point (C/C0 > 0.95) after passing 48 hours. Then the clay media was exhausted and lost its ability to remove Cl-. However, …</0.002>  Lire la suite

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disease seen in the older adult population, and has a greater influence on gait compared to the effects of aging alone. Spatiotemporal parameters can be used to quantify age-related changes in gait, however gait variability (i.e., the magnitude of stride-to-stride fluctuations with respect to time) and the fractal-scaling index (FSI) (i.e., correlated self-similar patterns of gait) can provide better information about the rhythmicity of the gait cycle over time. Recent studies have shown a relationship between knee OA and gait variability for certain spatiotemporal parameters, but the evidence is still preliminary and …  Lire la suite

In 1982, Pawlak proposed a theory of rough sets for data analysis. A fundamental concept of rough sets is the approximation of a set by a pair of lower and upper approximations or three pair-wise disjoint positive, negative and boundary regions. In 1990, Yao et al. introduced a probabilistic version called decision-theoretic rough sets (DTRS). Motivated by a three-way interpretation of the probabilistic positive, negative and boundary regions, in 2012 Yao proposed a theory of three-way decisions based on the actions of acceptance, rejection and non-commitment. The theory pro- vides a uni ed framework that integrates rough sets, interval sets, …  Lire la suite

First, the saturation pressure Psat, oil-swelling factor (SF), oil density, and CO2 solubility of CO2-saturated Bakken light crude oil were measured by using a PVT system. Second, the viscosities of CO2-saturated Bakken light crude oils with different CO2 concentrations were measured by using a capillary viscometer. Third, the vanishing interfacial tension (VIT) technique was applied to determine the minimum miscibility pressure (MMP) of the Bakken light crude oil and CO2 …  Lire la suite

2015 — Framing Effects in Officer Use-of- Force Decision Making
    Résumé

Framing research demonstrates that making simple changes to the description of a task or task strategy can affect behaviour in a number of contexts (Almashat, Ayotte, Edelstein, & Margrett, 2008), but to my knowledge they have not been examined in a law enforcement setting. The present research examines officer decision-making processes during an emergency situation by investigating the influence of framing effects on the use of force. An interactive video-based use-of-force simulation scenario represented the emergency situation and participants were presented with one of three preceding framing manipulations. The experimental conditions emphasized either upholding public safety (i.e., avoiding unnecessary/excessive force) …  Lire la suite

2015 — Hexagonal Cylindrical Lattices: A Unified Helical Structure in 3D Pitch Space for Mapping Flat Musical Isomorphism
    Résumé

An isomorphic keyboard layout is an arrangement of notes of a scale such that any musical construct has the same shape regardless of the root note. The mathematics of some speci c isomorphisms have been explored since the 1700s, however, only recently has a general theory of isomorphisms been developed such that any set of musical intervals can be used to generate a valid layout. These layouts have been implemented in the design of electronic musical instruments and software applications. This thesis presents a new extension to the theory of isomorphic layouts, taking advantage of the repetition of notes in …  Lire la suite

2015 — Optimization of CO2 Flooding Strategy to Enhance Heavy Oil Recovery
    Résumé

Heavy oil is a significant energy resource around the world. In Canada, there are tremendous heavy oil reserves lying in the north of the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. The key point for heavy oil recovery is to increase the mobility of heavy oil in the reservoir condition. The most effective methods of heavy oil recovery are thermal methods such as steam flooding, cyclic steam stimulation (CSS), steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and in-situ combustion for the great heavy oil viscosity reduction by heat. However, thermal methods are proving to be unsuitable for most of the heavy oil reservoirs in Canada …  Lire la suite

2015 — Localization with the EnKF for the Automatic History Matching of the SAGD Processes
    Résumé

The Ensemble Kalman Filter (EnKF) has been successfully applied to data assimilation in Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) processes, but applications of localization for the EnKF in SAGD processes have not been studied. Distance-based localization has been reported to be very efficient for assimilation of large amounts of independent data with a small ensemble in water flooding processes, but it is not applicable to SAGD processes, since in SAGD processes oil is produced mainly from the transition zone from steam chamber to cold oil instead of the regions around the producer. As the transition zone could be identified by saturation …  Lire la suite

2015 — Fatigue in Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: The Role of Parental and Child Factors for Mothers and Fathers
    Résumé

This study examined child and parental factors associated with fatigue in parents of children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) by using the Middle-Range Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (TOUS) model. The research was designed to 1) extend our understanding of fatigue in parents of children with a diagnosis of ASDs by investigating fatigue in both mothers and fathers, and 2) identify and examine the associations between psychological, physiological, parental situational, and child-based situational factors. Mothers (N = 78) and fathers (N = 34) of children with ASDs aged 2-12 years were recruited from across Canada. Participants completed a confidential questionnaire battery …  Lire la suite

2015 — Tunable Microwave Bandpass Filter Design Using The Sequential Method
    Résumé

Microwave filers are the essential components in a RF (radio frequency)/Microwave system, because they are used to provide frequency selectivity. A RF/Microwave system always supports multiple radio frequency bands. Thus, several microwave filters are normally needed in a RF/Microwave system. The more microwave filters a RF/Microwave system will need, the more cost and lager physical sizes the RF/Microwave system will have. Thus, tunable microwave filters provide the possibility to extensively reduce the cost and physical size of a RF/Microwave system. During the last several decades, tunable microwave filters have attracted lots of research efforts. Conventional methods used to design tunable …  Lire la suite

2015 — Mental Health Deterioration Among Western Canadian Post-Secondary Students: An Analysis of the Contextual Stressors and Obstacles to Utilizing Effective Coping Mechanisms
    Résumé

Symptoms consistent with mental disorders such as anxiety and depression have reportedly increased both in prevalence and in severity among North American post-secondary student populations over the past several years. The present study examines undergraduate students’ self-reported symptoms consistent with two common mental disorders in a Canadian context, and sheds light on several factors hypothesized to predict students’ mental health outcomes, including perceived contextual stressors within the academic setting, attitudes towards and use of coping mechanisms, and perceived barriers to seeking treatment. The ultimate goal of this study is not only to examine the unique contribution of each set of …  Lire la suite
