2021 — A Dynamic Predictive Analysis on Gas Pipeline Failure Consequence Using Bayesian Network
    Résumé

Nowadays, due to the economical, environmental, and social concerns which are the three pillars of sustainable development objectives, natural gas is considered as one of the most important and critical energies. Natural gas pipeline failure and related losses is a kind of devastating disaster because the threats of natural gas failure consequences may provide a huge extension that can simply lead to cascading disasters. Therefore, maintenance and repair of the deteriorating infrastructure like buried gas pipelines have been considered significant considerations amongst stakeholders and researchers in recent years. In this thesis, a dynamic Bayesian network (BN) was used to investigate …  Lire la suite

    2020 — Becomings-Unsettled? (Un) Braiding Settler-Treaty Life Writing
    Résumé

Rather than viewing this abstract as a simple outline of the main ideas, the nuts and bolts, the meat and potatoes, the name of the game, and the bottom line, I consider it a story. It is another moment for practicing life writing as research. On an early December morning, a large group of Canada geese gather on Pasqua Lake in the Qu’appelle Valley, near a brief narrowing of the lake in the southwest. The lake ice is thick except for a peculiar patch of open water, an oddity for the season. Here the geese float and flap mostly at …  Lire la suite

2014 — Treatment of Produced Water Using Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) Technique and Ionic Liquids
    Résumé

As population grows, more water and oil resources are needed to make more products. In addition, more contaminants are also created due to daily uses. Consequently, environment protection will be a necessary duty for everyone. As produced water is a by-product from the oil production process, and constitutes a large portion of the extracted liquid from the oil well, treatment of the produced water is necessary before discharging. Treatment of produced water is a benefit for many reasons such as extracting more oil from the produced water, using the treated water for irrigation, and finally for protecting the environment. In …  Lire la suite

2023 — Resonator sensors integrated in bandpass filters for the detection and attenuation of interfering signals
    Résumé

In microwave systems, RF front end devices are subjected to interference signal, this interference signal can damage the receiver end or disrupt wanted signals. This thesis proposes a method of sensing the interference signal by weak coupling a resonator to the filter. The proposed method employs a combline bandpass filter at 2 GHz center frequency at 5% bandwidth, which was designed on Advanced Design System (ADS) software and space mapping was performed to optimize the parameters. By weakly coupling the resonator to the filter, the interference signal of certain threshold power can be sensed. The resonator sensor designed are of …  Lire la suite

2014 — Mechanisms of Oil Recovery During Cyclic CO2 Injection process: Impact of Fluid Interactions, operating parameters, and Porous Medium
    Résumé

Carbon dioxide (CO2) injection processes are among the most promising enhanced oil recovery techniques based on their great potential to improve oil production while utilizing geological storage of carbon dioxide to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Among various CO2 injection modes, cyclic CO2 injection (CO2 huff-and-puff) scenarios have seen significant increase in interest for the purpose of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) in both non-fractured and fractured reservoirs. Several operating parameters, including operating pressure, solvent (CO2) injection time, soaking period, water saturation, etc., affect the performance of this process. However, the number of studies that consider these parameters is relatively limited. In …  Lire la suite

2022 — Active eavesdroppers detection system in multi-hop wireless sensor networks
    Résumé

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are vulnerable to eavesdropping attacks that endanger their privacy, confidentiality, and authenticity. As the broadcast nature of the wireless channel makes it susceptible to eavesdropping by adversaries, the detection of eavesdroppers in wireless networks can lessen the chances of more damaging attacks. Historically, researchers have attempted to reduce the risk of covert eavesdropping through the use of cryptographic protocols, information-theoretic solutions, and transmission range control. These methods are not suitable for WSNs with resource constraints. It is noteworthy that active eavesdroppers are legitimate nodes that are compromised by adversaries to eavesdrop on traffic while performing their …  Lire la suite

Nowadays, there is a growing need to manage trust in open systems. Service providers can autonomously join and leave the open system at any time. Thus, an open system may contain untrustworthy service providers. In order to handle the autonomy of providers, multi agent systems are used to develop open systems. In a virtual society, which consists of several autonomous agents, trust helps agents to deal with the openness of the system by identifying the best agents capable of performing a specific task, or achieving a specific goal. In this research, we first introduce ROSTAM, a new approach for Agent …  Lire la suite

2019 — Determination of Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals in Water and Wastewater in Saskatchewan
    Résumé

A liquid chromatography-negative ion electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-ESI--MS/MS) method was developed for the simultaneous analysis of endocrine disruptive chemicals including bisphenol A, 4-octylphenol, 4-nonylphenol, diethylstilbestrol, 17-β-estradiol, estriol, estrone, 17-α-ethinylestradiol, prednisone and prednisolone. Mass spectrometric detection of these target analytes is sensitive to the presence of additives in the mobile phase as well as those used in the sample preparation steps. To avoid issues with reduced mass spectrometry sensitivity, the sample preparation involved elution of the target analytes from the solid-phase sorbent with acetonitrile, drying, and reconstitution with methanol, water, and 2-propanol. Recoveries for all the analytes were from 82.4 …  Lire la suite

2013 — A Framework for Divisible Load E-science Applications in Optical Grids
    Résumé

E-science applications require discovering, collecting, transferring and processing large volumes of scientific data. In divisible load e-science applications, data is generated and stored in geographically distributed repositories (e.g., instruments, sensors, cam- eras, satellites and storage facilities). The generated data can be divided into in- dependent subsets to be analysed distributed at many computing locations. Such applications usually require optical networking for fast and reliable data transfer. In this thesis, we propose a framework for divisible load applications in optical grids. Within this framework, schedulers are developed to co-schedule computational and optical network resources. Moreover, processes to handle divisible load applications …  Lire la suite

2014 — Clarifying the Nature of Pain-Related Anxiety: Implications for Assessment and Treatment of Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain
    Résumé

Pain-related anxiety and anxiety sensitivity (AS) are important constructs in fearanxiety- avoidance models of chronic pain (Asmundson, P. J. Norton, & Vlaeyen, 2004). Pain-related anxiety (McCracken & Gross, 1998) includes dimensions of cognitive anxiety (e.g., concentration difficulties as result of pain), behavioural avoidance, fearful thinking about pain, and physiological reactivity to pain (e.g., autonomic arousal, nausea). AS (Reiss, Peterson, Gursky, & McNally, 1986) is the trait tendency to fear the physiological sensations of anxiety due to the belief such sensations signal imminent harm. Evidence suggests an association between AS and pain-related anxiety (e.g., Muris, Schmidt, Merckelbach, & Schouten, 2001; P. …  Lire la suite

Child eyewitnesses pose a continuous challenge for the criminal justice system. Researchers have made repeated attempts to combat children’s problematic over-choosing from a photographic lineup (e.g., Pozzulo & Lindsay, 1999), but difficulties remain. Although there have been multiple hypotheses put forth that attempt to explain why children struggle with correctly rejecting target-absent lineups (i.e., saying the perpetrator is not there when s/he is not), none have fully explained the reason for children’s error patterns (Dunlevy & Cherryman, 2013; Pozzulo & Lindsay, 1997). One possibility is that children overestimate the accuracy of their own memory. Children often exhibit similar levels of …  Lire la suite
