2016 — The Therapeutic Benefit of Expressive Writing for Posttraumatic Symptoms: A Ramdomized Controlled Trial of Emotional Moderators and Writing ModalityRésumé
Expressive writing is a therapeutic intervention requiring individuals to write about distressing events and their emotional responses to these experiences (Pennebaker & Beall, 1986). The use of expressive writing has improved behavioural, physiological, and psychological outcomes in many populations, including individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD; Baikie & Wilhelm, 2005). Greater self-disclosure on such writing tasks has been associated with higher perceived benefits and helpfulness (Brewin & Lennard, 1999). Researchers have investigated how expressive writing protocols can be utilized online to increase levels of self-disclosure when writing about traumatic experiences and, consequently, improve PTSD symptom outcomes. Researchers have not yet … Lire la suite

2020 — The West in Bronze: Analyzing the Market and Networks of Western American Bronze Sculptures, 1895-2019Résumé
This thesis examines the market growth of Western American bronze sculpture over the course of 124 years (1895-2019), from Frederic Remington’s Bronco Buster until now. The genre of Western American art is a highly marginalized genre that has received limited study, and the market analysis even less so. The research for this thesis was primarily conducted through the use of digital methodologies falling under the realm of the digital humanities and, in particular, digital art history. Such methodological approach, particularly productive for art market studies, brings to the fore quantitative data in relation to artist’s sales, dealer’s activities, auctions, and … Lire la suite

2014 — Reflections on Career Development: A Phenomenological Study of Women Who Coach Canadian High Performance Male Track and Field AthletesRésumé
Canadian female coaches are typically young, single and without a family, leave within the first five years of coaching, often hold part-time positions and are unlikely to coach male athletes (Kerr, 2010; Reade, Rogers & Norman, 2009). Further it has been suggested that the Canadian sport system does not adequately support women’s entry into the coaching profession (Kerr & Ali, 2012; Kidd, 2013). Several studies have explored the challenges female coaches face in establishing a career and working in sport (Kamphoff, 2010; Kerr and Marshall, 2007; Kilty, 2006; Norman, 2010a, 2010b; Staurowsky, 1990; Theberge, 1993; West, Green, Brackenridge & Woodward, … Lire la suite

2014 — Targeted knockout of PpASCL, an anther-specific chalcone synthase-like gene, supports role in sporopollenin biosynthesis in the moss Physcomitrella patens.Résumé
The anther-specific chalcone synthase-like (ASCL) gene of Physcomitrella patens, PpASCL, has been implicated in the biosynthesis of sporopollenin, the main constituent of exine and perine, the two outermost layers of the moss spore cell wall. Targeted knockouts of PpASCL were produced and the resulting mutants characterized. Knockout plants developed normally until late in sporophytic development, when the spores produced were aberrant and non-viable. The development of the spore cell wall appeared to be arrested early in microspore development, resulting in small, collapsed spores with irregular surface morphology. These results suggest that PpASCL plays an important role in the proper formation … Lire la suite

2018 — The Labourer Revealed, a Comprehensive Support Paper for the Exhibition, A Way of KnowingRésumé
A Way of Knowing is an exhibition comprised of nine 3-dimensional mixed media sculptures, made with an emphasis on process and production using traditionally feminine practices and materials, such as sewing and ceramics. The sculptures in the exhibition all reference my experience as a woman and mother in the context of domestic space. These sculptures explore the idea of female presence and empowerment, through the acts of maternal care and labour, to celebrate the practice of feminist mothering. This series began with an obsessive practice as a labourer, but explores my identity as a mother, through the lens of “women’s … Lire la suite

2022 — Feistel network-based prefix-preserving network trace anonymizationRésumé
Network traces represent a critical piece of data for the network security analysts to ensure the security of the data and detecting/correcting network issues. Due to lack of expertise, companies are forced to outsource their network traces to third parties to perform analytics on the traces and provide security feedbacks and recommendations. In fact, outsourcing network traces to third party analysts for monitoring and analytics is a common service requested by companies. However, these companies are reluctant to share their network traces, as they comprise sensitive information (e.g., IP addresses), which may be exploited for attacks. Therefore, such sensitive information … Lire la suite

2021 — DEEPVEG: Deep Learning for Multiclass Segmentation of Weed, Canola and Canola DamageRésumé
Farmers need to produce more food to feed the growing population. On top of that, pests (weeds and insects) pose a serious threat to crop production and we need to take steps to reduce the risk. Currently, the use of computer vision and deep neural networks have become a cornerstone in developing accurate methods of identifying and segmenting the damaged crops and weeds. Mostly the dataset taken under artifi- cial or controlled lighting conditions where foreground elements (i.e. weeds, crops) are easily distinguishable from the background (usually soil). However, real field datasets are collected under natural conditions. The lighting, shadows … Lire la suite

2023 — Mademoiselle de Beaumont is a man: The folklorization of the Chevalier d'Eon in French-language historical novelsRésumé
Academic historians have traditionally regarded historical fiction as of little value to serious research. However, the popularity of historical fiction as a genre demonstrates that it is a meaningful way to engage with history. This thesis explores how the Chevalier d'Éon (1728-1810) has been portrayed in historical fiction, concentrating on four French and one Japanese novel published in French between 1986 and 2011. Through the application of trans-world identity theory and identifying the factors necessary for a historical figure to be recognisable in historical fiction, this thesis analyzes how the close association of d'Éon with gender transgression makes them easily … Lire la suite

2022 — An interactive system for capturing users' qualitative preferences in recommender systemsRésumé
There are many different recommender systems available in this technological era, each with its own set of features and distinct selling points. We propose a new interactive system for eliciting and learning users’ qualitative preferences. These preferences are modeled as a conditional preference network (CP-net). The CP-net is a known graphical model representing qualitative and conditional preferences in a compact form. Users’ preferences are first captured through a learning method based on membership queries. These preferences are then compiled into a list of conditional preference statements. The CP-net is finally generated from this list. We are also incorporating a collaborative … Lire la suite

2018 — Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Cyclic Solvent Injection (CSI) Performance in Heavy Oil Systems In The Presence of Wormhole NetworksRésumé
Cyclic Solvent Injection (CSI) technique has demonstrated great potential to improve oil production in thin post-CHOPS reservoirs (thickness < 10 m), which are characterized by wormhole networks; where thermal and gravity-dominated methods fail to sufficiently enhance oil production. Several investigations and considerable speculations have been made to understand the oil recovery mechanisms, optimum mixing ratio of hydrocarbon solvents/CO2, as well as the cyclic injection scenarios of the process. In addition, the importance of wormhole coverage in the performance of CSI has been addressed in the literature; however, the studies on the effect of wormhole branching and networks in relation to the … Lire la suite

2024 — Refugee-background students in French immersion programs: Exploring the perspectives and ideologies of educators across the Canadian PrairiesRésumé
French immersion (FI) programs are becoming more culturally and linguistically diverse because of increased global migration to Canada. Researchers have found that multilingual families and learners are often highly motivated to learn both French and English in Canada (Dagenais & Jacquet, 2000; Dagenais & Moore, 2008; Davis et al., 2019). Moreover, multilingual learners tend to develop strong language proficiency in FI programs (Bourgoin & Dicks, 2019; Knouzi & Mady, 2017; Mady, 2015). However, multilingual learners are often excluded from FI programs on the basis of ostensibly low English language abilities (Davis et al., 2021; Mady & Masson, 2018; Roy, 2015). … Lire la suite
