2019 — The Cosmopolitan Traveler: Rendering Self and Coming Out Through A/R/Tographic VloggingRésumé
Learning about the self in relation to the world assists educators in making a positive impact in and out of the classroom. Learning to love the world, love the self, and love the relationship with the world is important and emphasizes a celebration of differences, in ourselves and those around us. The purpose of this a/r/tographic (artist/researcher/teacher) study, which is organized by Irwin’s conceptual renderings, is to develop a deeper understanding of how perspectives of the self may be altered by having experiences of solitude through extended solo travel and documented by video blogs. The study took place in Sydney … Lire la suite

2013 — Intelligent Tutoring Systems Measuring Student Effort During AssessmentRésumé
Each tutoring system must face the problem of dealing with uncertainty involved in student interactions. The quality of a correct answer to a question may be di erent for each individual student. Some answers are produced by careful thinking and anal- ysis using memorised facts, where other answers are just guesses. Therefore there is a need to develop a tutoring system which takes into consideration the quality of an answer to produce a more detailed student model. Many tutoring systems developed to this point use question-answer techniques to estimate the student knowledge state, however none of them take into consideration … Lire la suite

2014 — Advocates’ Perspectives on Decriminalization and Safety Strategies for Female Sex WorkersRésumé
Street-level sex workers are at a high risk for physical and sexual violence as a result of the stigmatization and marginalization of the sex trade industry. This thesis investigates the perceptions held by Regina sex worker advocates concerning the role of decriminalization as it relates to the safety of female sex workers. It examines the advocates’ perceptions on the type and extent of violence experienced by sex workers and the possible strategies or solutions to increase their safety. The data collected from eight semi-structured interviews with local advocates was analyzed using Attride- Stirling’s thematic network analysis. The findings of this … Lire la suite

2024 — An exploration of conceptual similarity in multiple target visual searchRésumé
Visual search studies generally suggest that multiple target visual search is more difficult and less efficient than traditional single target search, with costs to both RT and accuracy. Typically, these studies use dual target trials and abstract stimuli. A study by Laderoute (2021) using varying target set sizes and naturalistic stimuli found better performance for many-target search, with per-item RTs that decreased as target set size increased. Interestingly, increasing the perceptual similarity of the targets had no effect on search performance. However, in that study, regardless of the perceptual similarity condition, all targets within a trial were always the same … Lire la suite

2012 — National Security Crises and the Expanding American PresidencyRésumé
The Constitution is meant to protect the rights of American citizens, while providing the United States with a strong and responsible government. During times of crisis, the executive branch of the government has often expanded its authority claiming that it requires extra powers to defend the nation. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, the George W. Bush administration expanded executive power and Congress did not object. For example, Congress passed the USA PATRIOT Act and President Bush signed it into law on October 26, 2001, allowing law enforcement agencies to obtain records and conduct surveillance on anyone suspected of terrorism-related … Lire la suite

2017 — Teachers' and Students' Experience of Teaching and Learning in Culturally Diverse ClassroomsRésumé
The purpose of the study was to develop a deeper understanding of culturally diverse classrooms in Saskatchewan. This qualitative case study involved two elementary classrooms in two urban schools in Saskatchewan. The participants were two homeroom teachers and two Nepali immigrant students in those classrooms. Data were collected through classroom observation and interviews. Based on the data, the research generated four themes: Challenges for teachers and students, common strategies for teaching and learning, walking in two cultural worlds, and relationships in the culturally diverse classroom. Both teachers and students faced challenges during teaching and learning processes. The findings also show … Lire la suite

2023 — Structural analysis of the north-central Glennie Domain and controls on gold mineralization in the Santoy Gap Hanging Wall deposit, Seabee area, northern SaskatchewanRésumé
The Glennie Domain of northern Saskatchewan, centrally located within the Reindeer zone of the 1.9-1.8 Ga Tans-Hudson orogen, is a poly-deformed terrane with evidence of at least four phases of ductile deformation and resultant complex fold interference patterns. The domain also hosts the only producing gold mine in Saskatchewan, Seabee Gold Operation, currently producing from the Santoy deposits situated along a splay of the Tabbernor fault zone. This thesis presents results of structural study at a range of scales and involves two main components: a broad-scale analysis of the structural geology of the central Glennie Domain, coupled with detailed mapping … Lire la suite

2022 — Shifting focus: Feasibility of online mindfulness meditations as an adjunct to tailored internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapyRésumé
Background. Public safety personnel (PSP) are at an increased risk for developing mental disorders compared to the general population. The PSP Wellbeing Course is a transdiagnostic internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) course tailored to assist PSP to manage symptoms of depression, anxiety, and posttraumatic stress injuries using cognitive behavioural strategies. While the effectiveness of this course is supported by evidence (Hadjistavropoulos, McCall, et al., 2021), incorporating mindfulness as an additional strategy to assist PSP with symptoms could potentially improve the program. Mindfulness interventions can help people learn to experience the world and their reactions to the world in open and … Lire la suite

2017 — Exploring the Experiences of Young Adults Living in a Relationship With A Visually Impaired PartnerRésumé
This research explores the lived experiences of young adults living in an intimate relationship with a visually impaired partner. The aim of this research was to explore how young adults viewed their role in the relationship in terms of how they accommodate their partners with a visual impairment to understand feelings of and experiences with community supports; and to explore what partners felt they required for personal supports. This study employed a transcendental phenomenological approach, using semi-structured interviews with five adults age 23 to 39. The findings revealed the overall essence of participants’ experiences to be second nature. The essence … Lire la suite

2024 — The thief and the beauty queenRésumé
The Thief and the Beauty Queen is a middle-grade novel told from the perspectives of two eleven-year-olds, Landon and Cora—one known for theft and the other for social media fame—who must collaborate to mend their tarnished reputations. Aimed at readers aged 8-12, the story reflects the modern pressures young people face in balancing their online personas with their real-life identities. Drawing from my nineteen years of teaching experience, I sought to create a narrative that emphasizes authenticity and accountability, illustrating that we are not defined by others' perceptions. The novel appeals to readers by incorporating two alternating narrative voices. The … Lire la suite

2018 — Effect of Physioxia on Protein Levels in Adult Mouse (Mus Musculus) Neural Stem and Progenitor CellsRésumé
Neural Stem and Progenitor Cells (NSPCs) from the adult subventricular zone hold therapeutic potential for a variety of neurological diseases due to their capabilities of self-renewal and potential for differentiation into the cell types of the brain. The potential for autologous cell replacement using NSPCs in cases of neurological injury or disease alleviates many of the ethical and practical issues that are a concern of other stem cell varieties. However, an understanding of many of the basic mechanisms that influence NSPC behaviour under normal physiological conditions is still required to develop appropriate strategies for NSPC expansion in vitro or for … Lire la suite

2012 — Hydroclimatic Scenarios Using Dendroclimatic, Historical and GCM-Based Records Over the Northwestern Great PlainsRésumé
Historically, the Canadian Prairies have been highly susceptible to extreme drought and pluvial events, resulting in economic hardship. There are strong associations between large-scale circulation patterns (i.e. teleconnections), such as the low frequency Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), and higher frequency El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation/Arctic Oscillation (NAO/AO), and the interannual to multi-decadal hydroclimatic variations over western North American. Archives of the longest instrumental period of record (~100 to 150 years) are unlikely to capture the full range of hydroclimatic variability (50-70 years) or enable full assessment of the links between the large-scale circulation patterns and the regional … Lire la suite

2023 — A narrative exploration of the right to health in the lives of Indigenous womenRésumé
This study explores, through critical narrative analysis, the understanding of Indigenous women about conditions that they need to be healthy, and how their stories and reflections provide a critique that can inform thinking around the right to health. Literature from varied disciplinary perspectives describes the right to health, and a body of health human rights, as conceptual tools that identify the conditions all people require to be healthy, encompassing not just health care and access to material goods, but equality, culture, power and participation. Literature also provides some critique of human rights, and indicates that their alignment with dominant discourses … Lire la suite

2019 — Long-Term Effects of Forest Harvesting on Habitat Use By Insectivorous BatsRésumé
The short-term effects of forest harvesting on forest-dwelling bats have received considerable attention. However, knowledge about the long-term effects are also essential to better conserve forest-dwelling bat populations in North America. As vegetation regenerates over time post-harvest, changes created by harvesting (e.g., cutblocks and forest edges) will blur and eventually disappear with natural forest regrowth. Long-term effects of forest harvesting could thus differ from short-term effects on forest-dwelling bat species. To evaluate changes in habitat use by an insectivorous bat community in response to forest harvesting over time, I repeated a study (Grindal and Brigham 1999) conducted near Nelson, British … Lire la suite

2019 — ONISITOOTUMOWIN KEHTE-AYAK (The Understanding of the Old Ones) Of Healing from AddictionRésumé
Colonization and assimilation processes deteriorated access to maskihkiy (medicine) that act as protective factors to help work toward pimatisiwin (in a good way/good life). Exposure to generational trauma and layers of racism may be considered disruptive factors metaphorically depicted as maci-maskihkiy (bad medicine). These disruptive factors create achak (spirit) distress that is expressed through addiction. Using Indigenous methodologies to decolonize addiction research, knowledge about healing was constructed with five Indigenous Kehte-ayak (Old Ones, knowledge keepers) who answered the question, What do Kehte-ayak have to say about the relevance of harmonizing Indigenous ceremonial practices and western-based treatment approaches to meet inherent …

2016 — Ready or Not: Cooperating Teachers and Stories of ExperienceRésumé
This narrative inquiry explores the stories and experiences of two cooperating teachers, “Journey” and “Isla.” Research puzzles being explored include wondering why educators may or may not choose to become cooperating teachers and what challenges and successes they may encounter along the way. It seeks to understand the various roles cooperating teachers must play, and explores the concept of “readiness” and what the phrase means in the context of cooperating teachers and mentorship. Support emerges as a central theme, emphasizing the relational nature of mentorship. Both participants discussed positive outcomes from their experiences as cooperating teachers, but acknowledged difficulties in … Lire la suite
