2013 — Mass Transfer Studies of Carbon Dioxide Absorption into Aqueous Solutions of 4-(Diethylamine)-2-Butanol, Blended Monoethanolamine with 4-(Diethylamine)-2-Butanol, and Blended Monoethanolamine with MethyldiethanolamineRésumé
One of the parameters used to characterize the performance of a solvent for carbon dioxide (CO2) capture is the mass transfer performance of CO2 absorption in the solvent. In this study, a newly developed amino alcohol solvent, 4-(diethylamino)-2-butanol (DEAB), was evaluated for its mass transfer performance as a single or blended solvent in comparison with existing commercially available amine solvents. Consequently, the mass transfer performance characteristics of the absorption of CO2 in aqueous solutions of a primary alkanolamine (e.g. monoethanolamine, MEA), a tertiary amine (e.g. methyldiethanolamine, MDEA) and DEAB were compared using a bench-scale absorber packed with high efficiency DX … Lire la suite

2012 — Phylogenetic Analysis and Characterization of Plant, Environmental, and Clinical Strains of PantoeaRésumé
Multihost bacterial pathogens are an increasing concern as more bacterial species are found to cause harm to humans. Pantoea is recognized as a multihost pathogen, colonizing various hosts including plants, insects, and humans; however it is unknown how these strains are related, and the extent of their specific host ranges. Multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) on six housekeeping genes of Pantoea revealed that some species are mixed, and contain plant, clinical, and environmental strains, while other species groups are composed of only plant or only clinical strains. Comparative growth assays in maize, onion, and fruit flies revealed that all plant, clinical, … Lire la suite

2024 — The sustainability of Saskatchewan municipalitiesRésumé
Although the municipal government is considered closest to the people, municipalities are not referenced in the Canadian constitution. Recognizing this gap, soon after joining the Confederation of Canada in 1905, Saskatchewan enacted a municipal act to regulate its rural and urban sectors. The province sought to ensure that citizens in urban municipalities were provided with municipal services such as water and sewage treatment, medical services, and recreation and that rural municipalities served agricultural land with roads, bridges, and other necessary infrastructure. The critical difference between urban and rural municipalities lies in population density, governance structure, and the types of services … Lire la suite

2022 — Cross product ratio under different sampling schemes and zero truncated negative binomial weighted Weibull distribution with applicationsRésumé
A successful clinical trial requires efficient strategies for enrolling and retaining the study participants. In fact, Global data research suggests that participant enrollment issues are one of the major problems for the clinical trial termination. This thesis aims to compute the point estimators for the cross-product ratio ρ from two independent Bernoulli samples and determine the best sampling scheme. The idea of using Bernoulli samples to conduct clinical trials has been very successful since it is cost effective. Bias and Mean Squared Errors are used as the principal criteria. According to the simulation results, the special case of Direct-Inverse Binomial … Lire la suite

2024 — Participation in 12 weeks of the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s Diabetes Wellness Series: Effects on appetite hormone response to a mixed meal tolerance testRésumé
Food intake (FI) dysregulation in type 2 diabetes (T2D) may be due to impaired tonic satiety signals (e.g., insulin, leptin) and episodic FI signals (e.g., glucose, acyl-ghrelin [a-ghrelin; appetite-stimulating], active glucagon-like peptide-1 [aGLP-1; appetite-inhibiting]), promoting caloric overconsumption. Research has shown that regular physical activity is associated with more sensitive appetite control. The present thesis aimed to: (1) investigate the acute responsiveness of FI regulatory signals (glucose, insulin, a-ghrelin, aGLP-1) and perception of appetite to a 120-minute mixed meal tolerance test (MMTT) in individuals with T2D, and (2) assess the impact of participation in 12 weeks of the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s … Lire la suite

2024 — The role of modular construction and BIM technologies in sustainable construction and demolition waste managementRésumé
Construction and demolition activities significantly contribute to global waste generation, necessitating sustainable measures. This thesis explores advanced C&DW management through Building Information Modeling (BIM) and modular construction techniques. In the initial phase of the study, a comprehensive text-mining analysis of 493 scholarly publications (2009-2024) reveals key themes and temporal trends. The cooccurrence analysis identified three distinct clusters centered on C&DW management, highlighting strong correlations between "sustainability" (Links=41), "BIM" (Links=46), and "C&DW" (Links=46). Thematic development and evolution analysis indicated that during the third period (2018-2021), transversal themes included Material Passport (OCC=92) and Prefabrication (OCC=482). In the fourth period (2022-2024), transversal themes … Lire la suite

2021 — A Settler Colonial House of Mirrors: Understanding My Moral ArchitectureRésumé
The goal of my research was to reveal inherent and ingrained settler colonial orientations within my moral architecture. Through an autoethnographic research framework, I encountered my upbringing within colonial structures paying attention to the evolution of my awareness and my emerging thoughts. Self-reflection, self-observation, double-entry journals, and counternarratives embedded in relational learning and story supported me to understand my entanglement as a non-Indigenous educator whose white privilege is established and maintained by systemic racism. Working in the very colonial structures I aim to contest, I revealed enduring tensions within my social locations of colonizer perpetrator and colonizer ally. I surfaced … Lire la suite

2012 — Development of a mechanistic corrosion model for carbon steel in MEA-based CO2 absorption process.Résumé
This work developed a mechanistic corrosion model that can be used to predict corrosion rate of carbon steel in the carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption processes using aqueous solutions of monoethanolamine (MEA). The developed model enhances the capacity of the existing corrosion model developed by Veawab (2000) by incorporating three additional features including the presence of iron carbonate (FeCO3) on the metal surface and the presence of dissolved oxygen (O2) and heat-stable salts (HSSs) in the aqueous MEA solutions. The model was developed in Matlab, and comprises three sub-models, i.e. vapour-liquid equilibrium (VLE), species diffusion through a porous film, and electrode … Lire la suite

2020 — Analysis of Removing Weak Associations During Consensus ClusteringRésumé
Given multiple base clusterings of a dataset, e.g., as created by multiple clustering algorithms on the same data, consensus clustering aims to generate a single robust aggregated clustering. Consensus methods measure the strength of an association between two data objects based on how often the objects are grouped together by the base clusterings. However, incorporating weak associations in the consensus process can have a negative e ect on the quality of the aggregated clustering. This thesis presents our research on an automatic approach for removing weak associations during the consensus process. In particular, we propose an e cient approach called … Lire la suite

2022 — Extensions of the Erdős-Ko-Rado Theorem to Perfect MatchingsRésumé
One of the important results in extremal set theory is the Erdős-Ko-Rado (EKR) theorem which gives a tight upper bound on the size of intersecting sets. The focus of this thesis is on extensions of the EKR theorem to perfect matchings and uniform set partitions. Two perfect matchings are said to be t-intersecting if they have at least t edges in common. In 2017, Godsil and Meagher algebraically proved the EKR theorem for intersecting perfect matchings on the complete graph with 2k vertices. In 2017, Lindzey presented an asymptotic refinement of the EKR theorem on perfect matchings. In this thesis, … Lire la suite

2024 — Role of erythritol catabolism by Rhizobium johnstonii in the rhizospheres of lentil, pea, and vetchRésumé
Legumes are known for their high protein content and ability to improve soil fertility. They form a symbiotic relationship with rhizobia through exchange of signaling molecules and plant exudates, such as carbon sources, which, in turn, enable biological nitrogen fixation through the formation of nodules. In the rhizosphere, the environment around the roots, bacteria compete against each other for root colonization and nodulation. Rhizobium johnstonii is capable of catabolizing erythritol, a known pea root exudate. Previous deletion mutation of the catabolic genes (Yost et al., 2006) created strains unable or with reduced ability to grow on media containing erythritol as … Lire la suite
