2022 — The relationship between neurocognitive performance and sport-related musculoskeletal injuryRésumé
Background: The number of sport-related musculoskeletal (MSK) injuries continues to rise even with an increase in prevention programs. The potential relationship between neurocognitive performance and sport-related MSK injury has begun to emerge in the literature, with results suggesting that athletes with lower baseline neurocognition sustain more injuries compared to those with higher baseline neurocognition. Purpose: This study aims to build on the previous literature by investigating this relationship while controlling for variables that have been well-documented as predisposing factors for injury (i.e., previous MSK and brain injury). Methods: A total of 87 participants from the University of Regina Rams football … Lire la suite

2019 — Reaction Kinetics and Reactor Modelling For Crude Glycerol Autothermal Reforming to Hydrogen Rich GasRésumé
Biomass as a source of hydrogen production has gained great cognizance amongst researchers. The growing trend of energy is geared towards renewable energy sources for which crude glycerol serves as a viable source for hydrogen production. The most widely studied feedstock for hydrogen production is methane (CH4). In this work, crude glycerol which is a bi product in biodiesel production is considered because it produces higher number of moles of hydrogen than methane and also, adds up to the effective use of crude glycerol as a source of hydrogen. The kinetics for this system was studied over S/C ratio of … Lire la suite

2022 — Potential Impacts of Zebra Mussel Invasion on Gamefish Health and Prey Availability in Prairie LakesRésumé
Invasive species are a threat to global aquatic ecosystems. Nonetheless, their impacts can be heterogeneous across systems. Recent reports suggest Saskatchewan (SK) prairie lakes are highly prone to zebra and quagga mussels (ZQM) given their proximity to invasive corridors of Manitoba and three US states (Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota) where they have been reported. As the effect of ZQM on native species is variable and context-dependent across locations and time, an understanding of prevailing biological, physical and chemical conditions supporting various cohorts of fish communities is necessary for prioritizing mitigation efforts to address the potential effects of these dreissenids … Lire la suite

2023 — Fostering food security through local culture: Insights from Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities in SaskatchewanRésumé
Food insecurity has become a wicked problem and a global challenge, raising the concerns of farmers, consumers, and world leaders. Against the common opinion that food insecurity exists only in developing nations, research has shown that food insecurity is also experienced in developed countries like Canada and has been documented for over four decades. Findings from an online provincial survey with urban and rural respondents (n=168) have shown that Saskatchewan people have significant concerns about food insecurity. Hence, this thesis builds on the survey results and collects valuable insights through semi-structured interviews with 14 Val Marie and Muskeg Lake participants, … Lire la suite

2019 — Factors Influencing Entrepreneurship Development In Nigeria: The Role of LearningRésumé
Entrepreneurship has been positioned as a panacea to the economic development challenges facing Nigeria. Subsequent Nigerian governments have sought to foster a vibrant entrepreneurial class by investing in entrepreneurship education at the tertiary level. While that investment has yielded increased levels of entrepreneurial participation, it has had limited impact in terms of entrepreneurial business growth. Thus, there emerges a need to understand what factors influence entrepreneurial business growth in Nigeria and how successful Nigerian entrepreneurs learn to grow their businesses to inform future national human resource development (NHRD) policy. Consequently, this study explored how successful entrepreneurs in Nigeria learn to … Lire la suite

2021 — Universality of Weyl UnitariesRésumé
Weyl's unitaries are p×p unitary matrices given by a diagonal matrix having primitive p-th roots of unity as its entries and a cyclic shift matrix. The Weyl unitaries, which we denote by u and v, satisfy u^p= v^p=1_p(the p×p identity matrix) and the commutation relation uv=ζvu, where ζ is a primitive p-th root of unity. In this work, we prove that the Weyl unitaries are universal in the sense that if u and v are any d×d unitary matrices such that u^p=v^p=1_d and uv=ζvu, for some ζ, then there exists a unital completely positive linear map Φ:〖 M〗_p (C ) … Lire la suite

2019 — Numerical Modelling of Ground Penetrating Radar for Potash Mine SafetyRésumé
This thesis presents a software tool which simulates the geological stratigraphy of a potash mine which is then used with gprMax (public domain Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) simulation software) to examine and evaluate the effectiveness of auto-picking algorithms. The system is used to simulate the GPR response from clay seams in the roof of potash mining rooms. As it is extremely onerous to obtain in-situ data that captures all possible normal and anomalous geological conditions present in the mine roof, earth models are generated which accurately represents the geology of the mine. In particular, random clays in the mine roof … Lire la suite

2018 — The Application of Modified McKenzie Lithospheric Stretching Concept to 1D, 2D, and 3D Petroleum Systems Modelling Within the Saskatchewan Portion of the Williston BasinRésumé
A modified McKenzie’s (1978) lithospheric stretching model, in combination with standard backstripped and decompacted tectonic subsidence analysis, has been used to model the geological evolution of Saskatchewan portion of the Williston Basin and to simulate and evaluate a number of Petroleum systems. A model of low strain rate extension (low stretch factor) accompanied by cooling of the underlying lithosphere satisfactorily explains the long-term subsidence history of an intracratonic basin (Allen and Armitage, 2012), and as a consequence, three key areas of modified McKenzie’s model were implemented in this work. Firstly, to adopt Royden and Keen’s, (1980) discontinuous depth-dependent extension model … Lire la suite

2021 — Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) in Nigeria: A Genealogical Inquiry into the Inferior Positioning of TVETRésumé
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) has a role to play in addressing unemployment and poverty; however, for too long, this sub-sector has been overlooked. Educators and policy makers in Nigeria often view TVET as a sub-sector for those who were incapable of pursuing academic programs; thus, resulting in TVET being viewed as low status by students and the public. In contrast, education and training in the old African society were very functional and met the needs of the society. A review of literature on traditional African education reveals that education in the old African society was vocational in … Lire la suite

2016 — Bayesian Network Inference Using Marginal TreesRésumé
Bayesian networks (BNs) are formal probabilistic graphical models for reasoning un- der uncertainty. BNs are used in a variety of applications, including the state-of- the-art forensic software tool, a ranking system for games, and landing the Mars Exploration Rover. A problem domain is modeled initially as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) and the strengths of relationships are quanti ed by conditional probability tables (CPTs). One key feature of BNs is that multiplying all CPTs yields a joint probability distribution (JPD). Moreover, the DAG encodes independencies present in the JPD. Di erent techniques can be employed while reasoning with BNs. Variable … Lire la suite

2019 — On the Development of Deep Convolutional Sum-Product NetworksRésumé
A probabilistic graphical model (PGM) is a formal mathematical description of a problem domain. A Bayesian network (BN) is a PGM defined by a directed acyclic graph (DAG) and a set of conditional probability tables (CPTs). Two tasks can be employed when reasoning about a problem expressed as a BN: modeling and inference. In modeling, we want to express the problem domain as a DAG in which indepen- dencies among the variables involved can be read. There are two main algorithms for testing independencies from a BN DAG, namely, d-separation and m-separation. In this thesis, we begin by introducing Darwinian … Lire la suite

2014 — Prairie Audiences: An Investigation and Theoretical Contextualisation of Attitudes and Experiences of Theatre in ReginaRésumé
This study explores consumer expectations towards and intentions to attend live theatre within the context of an urban Saskatchewan audience and in relation to conventionally- defined forms of cinema and television. A gap exists between theory and empirical knowledge as it pertains to this audience. This thesis considers the role of the audience within the performative experience through the theoretical lenses of performance, criticism, consumer behaviour, and marketing; evaluating attitudes towards the three media and how these attitudes influence the behaviour and intention of consumers. Blending theory of spectatorship with marketing and behaviour theory and an empirical research strategy, this … Lire la suite

2018 — Straight Teachers' Perception of Queer Pedagogy: Saskatchewan High School Educators' Respond to Inclusive Pedagogy & Curriculum for Gender and Sexually Diverse YouthRésumé
Institutionalized heteronormativity continues to be maintained in school settings, which impedes the learning environment for many youths. Research suggests many Canadian schools continue to perpetuate heteronormativity and contribute to the marginalization of gender and sexually diverse (GSD) youth, leading to lower graduation rates, mental health issues and even suicide. The purpose of this qualitative study is to develop a deeper understanding of how heterosexual, Saskatchewan teachers approach, understand and bring awareness to GSD inclusive pedagogy. Queer theory provides a theoretical lens to develop a deeper understanding of participants’ connections to school as a heterosexualized institution, and also to deconstruct heteronormativity. … Lire la suite

2013 — Statistical Evaluation of Rapid Biochemical Oxygen Demand Test for Monitoring Municipal Wastewater QualityRésumé
The conventional standard methods for measuring wastewater quality include the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and carbonaceous BOD (CBOD5). This thesis presents an alternative wastewater quality test that requires much less time to achieve valid results. This research addresses the precision and statistical validity of an alternative methodology consisting of a two-phased testing approach: an enhanced total adenosine triphosphate (E-tATP) process and percent confirmatory bacterial reduction (%CBR) process that evaluates the aggressiveness of heterotrophic aerobic bacteria (HAB) communities as a means to determining the overall wastewater quality. Primary influent (PI) and final effluent (FE) samples from two municipal wastewater treatment … Lire la suite

2022 — The Indian solution to the policy problem: Articulating Indigenous and colonial policymaking models using an Indigenous lensRésumé
A defining feature of the post-contact policymaking era between Western colonial governments and Indigenous communities was the creation of the so-called “Indian problem” as an actual phrase used within colonial governments (Satzewich 1997; Episkenew 2009; Erasmus 2003). More than a phrase though, the “Indian problem: was the misidentification of an issue that defined the relationship between Indigenous people and the colonial government from that point forward and it is the basic premise of all the paternalistic policies Indigenous people are still subject to in Canada, such as the Indian Act (1985). Though often referred to, the concept of the “Indian … Lire la suite

2018 — Revision of the Genus Hylaeus Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Colletidae) in CanadaRésumé
Hylaeus Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Colletidae) is a genus of bees that can be readily recognized by the relatively hairless black bodies with yellow maculations (markings) on the face and thorax, including the legs. However, species-level identification is difficult due to the maculations of many species being highly variable with respect to shape and size, often resulting in high degrees of similarity between and among species. I use a combination of morphological and genetic (using the 558bp COI sequence – the barcode gene) analyses to assess species richness and diversity for the Hylaeus found within Canada, and create a comprehensive checklist and … Lire la suite

2012 — Optical Transitions in Amorphous SemiconductorsRésumé
In this thesis, a quantitative analysis of the optical response of an amorphous semiconductor is presented. The entire analysis is cast within the framework of an empirical model for the valence band and conduction band density of states functions, that captures the basic features expected of these functions. A novel aspect of this analysis is the introduction of the density of localized valence band and conduction band electronic states and the establishment of a means of evaluating these densities from knowledge of the density of states functions coupled with the locations of the valence band and conduction band mobility edges. … Lire la suite
