2022 — Machine learning enabled wireless sensor network for partial discharge detection
    Résumé

Partial Discharge (PD) is one of the leading causes of failure in high voltage electrical equipment, making it an important metric for predictive and preventative maintenance. Early detection of PD and corresponding maintenance can prevent catastrophic failures and improve safety and reliability. PD occurs when insulation between conductors is partially bridged causing electrical stress on the surface of the insulation. The PD phenomenon typically results in pulses of duration 1 μs or less. PD can be monitored using Off-line and On-line methods. While on-line is a more attractive option as it does not require system downtime. Some On-line methods include …  Lire la suite

    2020 — Cameron-Liebler Sets for 2-Transitive Groups
    Résumé

This research was conducted on 2-transitive groups whose minimal normal subgroup is abelian. Suppose G is such a group and ΓG is its derangement graph. Any maximum coclique S of ΓG has a characteristic vector xS. Each xS is a boolean vector contained in a particular module, which is called the permutation module MP. This module has a dimension of 1 + (n − 1)2, where n = deg(G), and it is spanned by {xij | i,j∈{1,...,n}}, where each xij is the characteristic vector of Sij, the set of permutations that map i to j. Apart from the xij, which …  Lire la suite

2013 — Development and Evaluation of a Hybrid Membrane Bioreactor for Greywater Reclamation
    Résumé

The development and evaluation of novel treatment and sanitation devices are necessary for the advancement of wastewater management practices. Considering future water demands and the limitation of current supplies, water security will likely become a central issue of the 21st century. To address this concern, a greywater reclamation system for non-potable water applications was developed and evaluated during this research. The reclamation system consisted primarily of a hybrid membrane bioreactor (HMBR), a biological treatment system containing both attached and suspended growth processes and membrane separation. A 10 month pilot study using synthetic and real greywater was conducted at the University …  Lire la suite

2020 — Examination of the Fouling and Treatment Performance of a Hybrid Membrane Bioreactor for Decentralized Greywater Reclamation
    Résumé

An examination of the fouling behaviour and treatment performance of a hybrid membrane bioreactor (HMBR) was made to assess its viability for decentralized greywater reclamation. In comparison to a conventional membrane bioreactor (MBR), the HMBR was able to operate 1{11 days (4{42%) longer between cleaning cycles. These reductions in the rate of membrane fouling could not be attributed to any scouring e ects caused by the biocarriers, since they were prevented from contacting the membranes throughout operation. An examination of the biofoulants within each bioreactor indicated that the ratio of proteins to polysaccharides was signi cantly lower in the extracellular …  Lire la suite

2023 — Examining native Saskatchewan bumble bees health using species occurrence data, pathogen incidence and gut microbial associations
    Résumé

Bees are important pollinators, though, recent evidence suggests some species of bumble bees (Hymenoptera, Apidae, Bombini, Bombus Latreille) are declining in parts of their ranges due to a combination of drivers such as climate change, pesticide use, habitat loss, competition for resources and pathogens acting upon the bees at once. A relatively new and important area of gut microbial research, the fungal and bacterial gut community members, could offer insight on why some species of bumble bees are declining while others remain stable. In this thesis, I use a combination of field and molecular methods to investigate aspects of bumble …  Lire la suite

2020 — The Role of Anxiety Sensitivity and Disgust on Facets of Covid-19-Related Anxiety
    Résumé

The COVID-19 pandemic has created a climate of fear, uncertainty, and panic as people cope with the spread and threat of a highly infectious disease. The influx of COVID-19-specific anxiety in the general population is of significant concern. Proponents of the behavioural immune system (BIS) argue that reactions to pandemics, such as excessive COVID-19-related anxiety, are shaped by psychological factors that help protect against infectious disease. Anxiety sensitivity specific to physical concerns (AS-physical concerns; i.e., the fear of perceived somatic signals of potential bodily harm) and disgust proneness (i.e., tendency to experience disgust frequently and intensely) are proposed to be …  Lire la suite

2018 — Hydrochemical Assessment and Modelling of Groundwater Quality of an Urban Aquifer Near A Sanitary Landfill
    Résumé

Groundwater supply is crucial to both anthropogenic and industrial activities in Canada. In Saskatchewan, around 63 percent of municipalities rely on groundwater as their primary water supplies. Recent data suggested groundwater quality in Condie aquifer might have been compromised due to the operations of an unlined municipal landfill and the industrial area upstream. The complex geographical conditions, hydrochemistry reactions in subsurface environment, missing data and inconsistent sampling has made the assessment of groundwater difficult. Two studies on the groundwater quality near the Regina landfill are conducted. In the first study, groundwater quality is evaluated with respect to its ions correlations, …  Lire la suite

2016 — Saskatchewan Electrical Power Systems Planning under Stochastic Conditions and Federal Climate Change Regulations
    Résumé

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industrial activities are the key drivers of climate change impacts in many regions around the world. In 2012, Environment Canada and Climate Change published its first GHG emissions performance standards, the Reduction of Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Coal-fired Generation of Electricity Regulations, to set up the performance standards for coal-fired generation units to reduce GHG emissions in Canada. Saskatchewan is concerned about the impact of the published regulations on future electricity generation system planning and GHG. Specifically, the regulations result in a shift from existing coal-fired generation units towards other high efficient power generation units …  Lire la suite

2013 — Can Meaning Associated with Perceptual Grouping Modulate Attention?
    Résumé

In an environment rich with information, performance on a task depends on the ability to select only the relevant pieces of information for achieving a current goal. Cognitive psychologists propose that selective attention helps to segregate the relevant information from the irrelevant information. A combination of bottom-up and top-down factors jointly influences the settings of the attentional filter (Spalek, Falcon & Di Lollo, 2006) such that only task-relevant information is selected for further processing. However, biologically- and socially-important stimuli like affective faces are proposed to influence allocation of attention (Vuilleumier & Schwartz, 2001). Task-irrelevant emotional faces are proposed to capture …  Lire la suite

2023 — Efficient estimation for time series models
    Résumé

In this dissertation, we discuss the pretest, improved pretest and shrinkage estimators for some time series regression models, such as ARIMA, GARMA, and GARFIMA. We study the asymptotic biases and risks of these estimators and compare their relative performance with respect to the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) analytically and numerically using Monte Carlo experiments and real data examples. In Chapter 2, we consider the James-Stein shrinkage estimation procedure for the ARIMA regression model when some prior/auxilliary information is available about insignificant covariates in the model. The asymptotic properties of the shrinkage estimators, under local alternatives, are implemented including the derivations …  Lire la suite

2012 — Experimental Investigation of Viscosity Ratio Effect on Displacement Performance of Polymer Systems During Heavy Oil Recovery
    Résumé

Heavy oil production during secondary recovery is often plagued by high producing water/oil ratios; this is a direct result of the unfavourable viscosity ratio that leads to viscous instability at the displacement front between the injected water and the more viscous oil. Polymer flooding has proven to be an exceptionally efficient enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique that increases the stability of the displacing front, accelerating the pore displacement efficiency and improving the vertical and areal macroscale sweep efficiencies. This is especially important in heavy oil reservoirs, where recovery factors tend to be less than 10 % of original-oil-in-place (OOIP) The …  Lire la suite

    2023 — Saturated–Unsaturated behaviour of compacted clays
    Résumé

Clayey soils are often compacted for geotechnical and geo-environmental construction such as hydraulic dams, road embankments, tailings containment facilities, and municipal landfills. Post construction, these earthworks are exposed to variations in seasonal weather and extreme climatic events (drought, flood, and freezing), contaminations (deicing salts, ion-rich slurries, and toxic leachates), and applied stresses (self-weight, vehicular traffic, and heavy equipment), thereby affecting the integrity of civil infrastructures. The geotechnical behavior (flow through, volume change, and shear strength) is governed by soil composition and compaction, soil-water-electrolyte mechanisms, soil-atmosphere interactions, and field conditions. This research focused on developing a clear understanding of saturated–unsaturated behavior …  Lire la suite

2025 — New probabilistic approaches for detecting and evaluating concept drift in data streams
    Résumé

In modern applications like online shopping, financial forecasting, and real-time fraud detection, data distributions frequently shift, causing predictive models trained on historical data to underperform. This phenomenon, known as Concept Drift (CD), presents a major challenge in adaptive learning environments, necessitating ongoing monitoring and adjustment to accommodate evolving data streams. Active drift detection methods, which track changes in data distribution or model performance, offer a targeted solution by prompting adaptations only when significant shifts are detected. However, existing active methods face challenges: distribution-based approaches may miss subtle drifts or respond to non-critical changes (virtual drift), while performance-based methods, which detect …  Lire la suite

2024 — Musings on matchings, matrices, and multiplicities
    Résumé

The Parter-Wiener Theorem is a celebrated contribution to the inverse eigenvalue problem for trees due to its determination of vertices whose removal affects multiplicities of eigenvalues in a non-intuitive manner. For a more general graph, G, that contains cycles, the construction of the weighted matching polynomial and its many properties are derived. These properties are shown to determine a relationship between the multiplicities of the roots of the weighted matching polynomial and the graph operation of vertex deletion in G, which is the operation at the core of the Parter-Wiener Theorem. Solutions for locating vertices whose removal increases the multiplicity …  Lire la suite

2021 — Efficient and Robust Methods for Computing Trust in Multi-Agent Systems
    Résumé

In systems with multiple potentially deceptive agents, any single agent may have to assess the trustworthiness of other agents in order to decide with which agents to interact. To evaluate the trustworthiness of an agent in a multi-agent system, one often combines two types of trust information: direct trust information derived from one’s own interactions with that agent, and indirect trust information based on advice from other agents. Since the advisors themselves may be deceptive or unreliable, agents need a mechanism to assess and properly incorporate advice. In this thesis, we evaluate existing state-of-the-art methods for computing indirect trust in …  Lire la suite

The prevailing high-resolution Positron Emission Tomography (PET) block detector architecture uses pixelated scintillating crystals coupled to a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PS-PMTs) or a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) array. In such detector designs a light guide layer between the finely segmented scintillating crystal array and coarsely segmented photosensitive layer is introduced, which allows to distribute the scintillation light over several elements of the photosensor. Commonly, such detectors employ some form of analog signal multiplexing to minimize the number of readout electronics channels and employ Center of Gravity (CoG) approach to calculate the positions of gamma ray interactions. 2013 — Smoking to Cope with Pain: The Motivating Effects of Pain Induction on Smoking Urge and Behaviour
    Résumé

Millions of Canadians live with chronic pain. Substantial evidence has linked tobacco smoking with both acute and chronic pain conditions. Contemporary models of pain and smoking posit a cyclical relationship wherein individuals smoke to reduce pain in the short term; however, smoking to cope with pain indirectly exacerbates pain in the long term. Recent findings suggest situational pain is sufficient to increase smoking urge and immediate smoking behaviour (Ditre & Brandon, 2008). The purpose of the current investigation is to replicate and extend the findings of Ditre and Brandon (2008) by investigating the effects of (a) situational pain on smoking …  Lire la suite

Background: Smoking and chronic pain are major public health concerns in Canada. Contemporary models of smoking and chronic pain suggest a reciprocal and self-perpetuating cycle, wherein smoking reduces pain in the short term but indirectly exacerbates pain in the long term. Population evidence indicates that a majority of Canadian smokers want to quit smoking; however, 90% of quit attempts are unsuccessful. Quitting may be even more difficult for those with chronic pain. Pain-related anxiety and expectancies that smoking will reduce pain have been suggested as additional cessation barriers faced by some individuals with chronic pain. Internet-based interventions have been suggested …  Lire la suite
