2013 — Applicability of Solvent-Assisted Polymer Flooding to Improve Heavy Oil RecoveryRésumé
Recently, one of the non-thermal oil recovery techniques, polymer flooding, has shown its potential for improving heavy oil recovery. This study investigated the potential of combining solvent-based processes and polymer flooding, called Solvent- Assisted Polymer Flooding, to improve the oil recovery from thin heavy oil reservoirs in Western Canada. This was accomplished through a series of carefully designed laboratory experiments and a lab-scale numerical simulation. This study attempted to validate the feasibility of the solvent-assisted polymer flooding method with respect to enhancing heavy oil recovery and the impact of fluid and operational parameters on the performance of this suggested technique … Lire la suite

2022 — Hot Tensile Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy Using Artificial Neural Network and Constitutive ModelingRésumé
Nowadays a considerable quantity of metallic parts has been manufactured via metal forming processes, such as rolling, stamping, drawing, etc. at the ambient temperature. However, limited workability of some alloys may lead to shaping them at higher temperatures, where the material can flow more easily and the part would contain less defects. Since the stress at low temperature is a function of strain (the relative amount of deformation), the flow behavior of material at these temperature is rather straightforward. At high temperature other parameters, namely temperature and strain rates, should be also taken into account in predicting the flow stress. … Lire la suite

2013 — Bond Formation Reactions to Phosphorus Using an Electrophilic Phosphinidene ComplexRésumé
Electrophilic phosphinidene complexes play a central role in organophosphorus chemistry. The chemistry of transient phosphinidene complexes has been well studied, but stable, cationic phosphinidene complexes are not as well understood. Therefore the reactivity of a cationic phosphinidene complex [CpFe(CO)2{PNiPr2}]+ (Cp = η5-cyclopentadienyl, iPr = isopropyl), toward bond activation, cycloaddition and nucleophilic addition has been examined. The complex [CpFe(CO)2{PNiPr2}]+ reacts with primary, secondary, and tertiary silanes to form the silyl phosphine complexes [CpFe(CO)2{P(H)(SiR3)NiPr2}]+ (SiR3 = SiPhH2, SiPh2H, Si(C2H5)3), in which the phosphinidene has inserted into the Si-H bond. A computational study shows that the insertion is concerted. The same phosphinidene complex … Lire la suite

2021 — A Comparative Study of Short-Term Electric Vehicle Load Forecasting Using Data-Driven Multivariate Probabilistic DeepAR ApproachRésumé
With the surge of electric vehicles (EVs) and consequently the increase in power consumption, the power grid is facing many new challenges. Charging load forecasting remains one of the key challenges, that if not effectively scheduled, it may result in instability and quality-related issues in power systems. In recent years, numerous load forecasting techniques using machine learning and deep learning were proposed for predictions covering both commercial and household demands. However, there are very few studies that employed these methods to predict EV charging load behavior. This thesis proposes a multivariate RNN-based deep learning framework to forecast the short-term data-driven … Lire la suite

2012 — Novel genes required for proper cell envelope function in the plant symbiont Rhizobium leguminosarumRésumé
The cell envelope of Gram-negative bacteria is a complex structure that is critical for facilitating interactions between bacteria and their environment. The objective of this research was to identify and characterize novel genes required for proper cell envelope development in the legume symbiont Rhizobium leguminosarum. In R. leguminosarum there is a positive correlation between mutations that affect cell envelope structure and sensitivity to peptide-rich media; therefore, I implemented an innovative transposon mutagenesis approach to identify novel genes connected to the cell envelope by screening for mutants unable to grow on peptide-rich media, but unaffected in growth on minimal media. Of … Lire la suite

2019 — Exploring Relationships Among Passion, Self-Compassion, Fear of Self-Compassion, Deliberate Practice, and Performance in Canadian Women's Fastpitch AthletesRésumé
Research has been conducted on passion through a variety of activities, including sport. Passion, according to Vallerand et al. (2003), is “a strong inclination toward an activity that individuals like [or love], that they find important, in which they invest time and energy, and which comes to be internalized into one’s identity” (p. 507). Defined by the dualistic model of passion, harmonious passion describes a passion freely chosen because it had become valuable and meaningful to a person; conversely, obsessive passion describes a passion where individuals feel compelled to participate because some feelings of social acceptance, self-esteem, etc. are attached … Lire la suite

2012 — Investigation and Reconstructions of the Hydroclimatic Variability of the Souris River BasinRésumé
growing dependence on surface water resources in the Prairie Provinces has resulted in an increasing vulnerability to hydrological drought. A serious risk from recent and projected climate warming in the Canadian Prairies is a shift in the amount and timing of streamflow. The Souris River Basin has, over the years, been plagued with problems associated with either inadequate water supplies and flooding, both of which affect the social and economic well being of the residents of the Souris River Basin. Managing for the greater range of hydrologic variability evident in proxy records versus gauged, hydrometric records can prepare water managers …

2025 — A multi-proxy environmental and limnologic paleo-reconstruction of two lakes in Southern Saskatchewan recording the past 6,700 cal. years BP based on ostracodsRésumé
Paleoenvironmental and paleolimnological reconstructions are of great importance to understand future responses of the environment to climate change and environmental stress. Two lake archives, Deep Lake and St. Denis – Pond 1, are used to understand past environmental and limnological conditions in the northernmost part of the Great Plains of North America. Climatic conditions are inferred from the lake sediments and the ostracod assemblage for the Mid- to Late-Holocene (6,700 to 120 cal. yr BP). Mainly, dry conditions with shorter wetter conditions prevailed during the Mid-Holocene as suggested by the presence of a depositional hiatus from 6,302 to 4,366 cal. … Lire la suite

2016 — Building the Fransaskois Identity through DramaRésumé
By exploring how drama contributes to building a Fransaskois identity, I attempt to situate Fransaskois literature within Saskatchewan’s literary landscape. Literary critics have to this day mostly excluded Fransaskois literature from the concept of Saskatchewan literature, and yet a close look at Fransaskois texts reveals an identity deeply anchored in Saskatchewan’s landscape, history, and language. I analyze four plays: Bonneau and Miss Bellehumeur by Raoul Granger, The Betrayal by Laurier Gareau, sTain by Madeleine Blais-Dahlem and Rearview by Gilles Poulin-Denis. I argue that these plays build the Fransaskois identity by exploring the relationships Fransaskois characters have with the other linguistic-cultural … Lire la suite

2016 — The Systemic Nature of Personal Debt: A Critical Realist Approach to Analyses and SolutionsRésumé
Keywords: Personal debt, overindebtedness, financial system, financial literacy, critical realism, critical theory, structures, rational choice, financial regulation, social policy. Despite widespread concern, the causes and effects of the 2008 financial crisis have not been sufficiently addressed. Rising and problematic levels of personal debt remain a significant problem in Canada and across the globe. Efforts to re-regulate the economic system have been minimal, and the mainstream policy narrative tends to focus on financial literacy education strategies for individuals. These approaches stem from the tendency to understand the personal debt problem in highly oversimplified terms, rooted in hegemonic rational choice theory. This … Lire la suite

2024 — Examining the gut microbiota in agingRésumé
The human gut microbiome, comprised primarily of bacteria, plays a crucial role in overall health and physiology by regulating metabolism, immunity, and behavior through the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA). Key functions include fermenting complex carbohydrates into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) that maintain gut integrity, modulating inflammation, and influencing energy homeostasis (i.e., food intake regulation). For example, SCFAs can play a role in food intake regulation by directly or indirectly influencing episodic appetite signals (ghrelin, glucagon-like peptide 1 [GLP-1]) and tonic appetite signals (leptin, insulin). Gut dysbiosis, or an imbalance in the gut microbiome, leads to altered metabolic processes, increased epithelial permeability, … Lire la suite

2020 — Generation du feu or incommensurable interpretations? A study of officer enlisted man relations in the French army during the First World War.Résumé
Abstract What was the nature of relations between French officers and enlisted men during the First World War? Soldiers’ testimonies from the First World War exist in profusion, allowing us to examine the interpretations of those who lived through it. Historians employing the diverse methods military, social, cultural, and quantitative history can roughly be grouped into schools of “consent” or “coercion” with respect to their attempts to outline the nature of authority in the French Army during the First World War. France’s civil social hierarchy was reproduced in the ranks, producing incommensurate experiences that served to maintain a gulf between … Lire la suite

2024 — A mixed methods study on barriers and facilitators to exercise for suicidal ideation managementRésumé
Suicide is a leading cause of premature death. Innovative and effective interventions are needed to prevent suicide deaths. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have demonstrated that a variety of structured exercise programs (e.g., aerobic exercise, resistance training exercise) improve mental health, including reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms. Moreover, failure to meet established guidelines for physical activity is associated with increased odds of experiencing suicidal behaviours. Exercise may, therefore, be one intervention option to reduce the suicidal behaviours (i.e., suicidal ideation [SI] and plans for suicide) that often precede suicide. In order to benefit from the effects of exercise, individuals with suicidal … Lire la suite

2018 — An Investigation of the Associations Between Intolerance of Uncertainty, Attentional Network Functioning, and Attentional Bias for UncertaintyRésumé
Intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is the tendency to fear the unknown and is a transdiagnostic dispositional vulnerability and maintenance factor for anxiety and anxiety-related disorders (Carleton, 2016). Researchers have suggested that IU may be associated with altered attentional network functioning, which may lead individuals with elevated IU to be more aware of potential sources of uncertainty, thereby increasing anxiety (Fergus et al., 2013; Fergus & Carleton, 2016; Norwood, 2014). The few studies that have examined attentional network functioning and attentional biases related to IU have produced conflicting results, possibly due to the methods used and a failure to control for … Lire la suite

2015 — Walking the Walk: Exploring the Utility of a Computerized Gait Method in Feigned Symptom DetectionRésumé
Malingering represents a significant concern in clinical settings. It is defined as intentionally producing or exaggerating symptoms to obtain external and/or personal gain. Common detection approaches utilize consistency testing, whereby tests are administered multiple times and deviations across these occasions are calculated; high variability of scores is considered indicative malingering (feigning) may be taking place. Current feigning assessment techniques have high rates of false positives in part due to inherent subjective elements, making them suboptimal. No research has been conducted using computerized assessments of gait parameters in feigning detection. Computerized methods allow(s) for a precise examination of multiple gait parameters. … Lire la suite

2018 — Body Roll Differences in Freestyle Swimming Between Swimmers With and Without Shoulder PainRésumé
Shoulder pain is the most common complaint for swimmers of any level, the prevalence of which is reported to be between 40% and 91%. The term ‘‘swimmer’s shoulder’’ covers a spectrum of coexisting pathologies, with rotator cuff–related pain being the most common finding. Among many other variables, body roll has been proposed as a potential variable affecting shoulder pain, due to its potential to modify hand path and upper limb kinematics. This study aimed to identify potential differences in body roll between swimmers with and without shoulder pain. 24 competitive swimmers (21.5±4.8 years old) were recruited from several teams in … Lire la suite

2019 — Application of Predictive Analytics in Estimating Mechanical Properties for Investment CastingsRésumé
The investment cast parts are widely consumed in aviation, automotive, power generation, biomedical, and ship-building industries. The investment casting process is known for manufacturing complex shape parts with near-net finish. This process starts by making wax pattern similar to the shape of finished cast part. These patterns are assembled on a tree structure. A ceramic mold is formed around the tree assembly by repeatedly coating the ceramic mold with ceramic slurry and sand until the desired ceramic mold strength is obtained. The wax is then removed from the ceramic mold by heating it in the furnace. The molten metal is … Lire la suite

2011 — Using Ballistocardiography to Evaluate Cardiac Performance in Trained Male Ice Hockey PlayersRésumé
During exercise the demand on the heart increases considerably. Evidence suggests that long-term exercise training causes adaptations to the heart that are not present in the sedentary, and is commonly referred to as athlete’s heart. It is not unusual for the cardiac adaptations to mimic certain pathological conditions. Therefore, being able to differentiate the athletic heart from the pathological heart has important implications for trained athletes. The presence of cardiovascular disease permits disqualification from competition or cessation of training to prevent progression of the disease or sudden cardiac death. Commonly used diagnostic tools to evaluate cardiac performance (e.g., echocardiography) can … Lire la suite

2019 — Advanced Numerical Modeling Techniques For Modern Waste Management SystemsRésumé
This thesis presents original results to the advancement of numerical modelling of a modern waste management system with respect to generation, collection, and disposal of non-hazardous solid waste. The first part of the thesis specifically look at lag times relating to variables that attempt to predict municipal yard waste generation using machine learning approaches. Weekly averaged climatic and socio-economic variables are screened through correlation analysis and the significant variables are then used to develop yard waste models. These models then utilize artificial neural networks where the variables are time lagged a different number of weeks. Optimal lag times for each … Lire la suite
