Locally made baskets from bulrushes have long been used village women in the Lubny area (Poltava oblast) for carrying milk and vegetables to town for the market. People also used them to take food and water for themselves to the fields where they worked. The zemstvo (local landholders' administration) supported the development of artisanal crafts at the end of the 19th century. Substantial changes occurred in artisanal crafts with the arrival of Soviet rule. People were required to join аn organized work brigade to continue such trades. Based on fieldwork, I provide a description of the artisanal craft in the first half of the 20th century and as it changed since that time. Gradually, with the development of industry, the need for baskets of this type decreased, and the craft began to decline. The generation that learned to make baskets in the 1950s and 1960s is now passing away.

Ma recherche-création s’intéresse à nos réflexes capitalistes et aux manières de s’en défaire en puisant dans le concept de neuroplasticité, qui est la capacité du cerveau à se modifier en remodelant ses connexions neuronales. J’élabore des tentatives de désenvoûtement, qui passent par le détournement d’outils et de savoirs reliés à l’autosuffisance. Ma présentation, sous forme d’aménagement-atelier, s’apparente à un terrain de jeu libre : on y retrouve des courtepointes en sacs de terre rembourrées de végétaux, une serre expérimentale, de vers rouges de vermicompost digérant lentement des listes de choses à faire et plusieurs autres détournements accompagnés d’instructions dessinées. This article looks at the documentary films made by priests between 1930 and 1960, showing how ethnographic research formed the basis of the works by seven filmmakers who created a coherent cinematographic movement. We then express the idea that thanks to filmmaking, ethnography became involved in the clerical discourse by transmitting messages in an entertaining and light-hearted way. Finally, the article highlights the way ethnographic fieldwork was tied in with the regionalist attitudes of the filmmaker-priests. While French Canadian ethnography was used as a tool to promote a locally based patriotism, that of indigenous cultural practises enhanced a utopic vision of the French Canadian nation.
