Barbara Welter concludes her pathbreaking article, “The Cult of True Womanhood, 1820-1860,” by declaring that “[Various forces in their lives] … called forth responses from woman, which differed from those she was trained to believe were hers by nature and divine decree. The very perfection of True Womanhood, moreover, carried within itself the seeds of its own destruction. For if woman was so very little less than the angels, she should surely take a more active part in running the world, especially since men were making such a hash of things” [174]. Traditionally, in both Welter’s original work and the many efforts that have subsequently followed, the living out of “True Womanhood” and the creative subversion it unintentionally inspired have been understood almost exclusively in either secular or Protestant contexts. This article explores the role of Catholic education by sisters in both reinforcing and undermining Victorian gender roles, and specifically analyzes the contributions of Catholic women religious to the complex and subversive process that Welter suggested. It analyzes the cultural and religious tensions that characterized nineteenth-century Catholic women’s education, as well as the women’s agency that, however inadvertently, it came to empower.

The Canadian province of Ontario introduced philosophy as a secondary school subject in 1995 (Pinto, McDonough, & Boyd, 2009). Since publicly-funded Catholic schools teach approximately 32% of all students in Ontario (Ontario Ministry of Education, 2022), the question arises regarding how teachers in those schools coordinate philosophy and Catholic teachings.  This study employs a secondary analysis of interviews with six teachers from Ontario’s Catholic schools, and employs two of Avery Dulles’ (2002) conceptions of church (institution and mystical communion) to determine how they consider the choices available within their own tradition that could answer this question. Rather than looking only at the shortcomings of treating magisterial teaching as philosophy, this paper argues that there are also conceptual problems that these courses must address in order to improve their ecclesiological adequacy, and illustrates how an apparent null curriculum privileges the institutional ecclesiology.

What are the objectives assigned to cultural mediation in music production and distribution organizations in Quebec? How are these activities implemented? Artists, musicologists, educators or mediators, who are the actors involved in such actions? Based on the results of a questionnaire survey of 100 music distributors and producers who are members of the Conseil québécois de la musique, this article provides an overview of music mediation practices in Quebec.

The praxis of sociocultural community development often posits that sociocultural community developers initiate cultural actions in their role as agents of State policies. I contend, however, that it remains possible for marginalized groups to be the source of these actions. I demonstrate this through a case study, the LGBT Pride parades. By operationalizing a cultural action that acknowledges social actors’ capacity for action, we examine if the relevant traits can be found in the parades. Although they are a site of tensions, notably between assimilation and subversive politics, inclusion and homogeneity, consumerism and autonomous solidarity, and although there is indeed a risk of depoliticization and adoption of consumerist logic, they nonetheless were initiated autonomously. This invites us to rethink the range of possible involvement from cultural animation.

A review of research on police body-worn cameras (BWCs) reveals that the focus of most studies was narrow and dealt mainly with the possible deterrent effects of BWCs on use of force by police and (mis)behavior by citizens during police-citizen interactions. This paper draws on our published research and the available empirical evidence as well as a few relevant anecdotes to shed light on three woefully under-researched areas relevant to the current support and use of BWCs. These areas are : (1) the marketing and sale of body-camera technology to law enforcement, (2) the use of body-camera footage in police promotional materials, and, last, (3) the use of visual evidence in the courtroom, which increasingly includes materials from police BWCs. We argue that increased understanding of these three areas, supported by additional empirical data, is necessary for a more rounded and critical awareness of how and why BWCs are being implemented by law enforcement agencies. We conclude with a short discussion and offer a few suggestions for future research.

Within the context of defining postnational political structures, all nation-states must currently face the obligation of redefining their position vis-à-vis the national culture. While the national culture may be seen, from a liberal standpoint, to require no intervention or specific action by the State, it may equally be perceived, on the other hand, to require the State's active support. The history of nationalism has frequently tarnished this latter position, but one could anticipate that, under certain conditions, this State protection would become important, and even necessary. The question becomes, at this stage, to define the markers of such a progressive nationalism adapted to the contemporary context.

This study focuses on obtaining a better understanding of the amount of data required by a crime linkage system to identify serial violent crimes. The key objective of the research was to empirically test and discuss the relevance of reducing the content necessary to use these tools. Data for the current study was extracted from a French violent crime linkage database (ViCLAS). Analysis focused on the most used variables in the context of a sexual assault. Descriptive and factorial analysis were used to identify what kind of information is collected by the police and how it could be reduced by aggregating correlated data. Findings show that approximately 65 % of the types of information collected are used in less than 5 % of sexual assault cases. Results of factorial analysis show that it is possible to drastically reduce the information needed to use the tool effectively. Practical implications of these findings for sexual assault investigations are discussed.

This study focuses on the techniques and skills of the traditional lead method of master glassmaker Olivier Ferland (1928-2017). It looks at the lived experience and techniques as described by Ferland himself in his writings, or by authors who relate his ideas in cultural interviews and ecclesiastical booklets, as part of a literature review. The goal of this work is to develop a broad perspective and general knowledge of stained glass practices, techniques and craftsmanship. It will explore aspects of the skills and techniques of early stained glass that have been passed down to the present day and will show that there is both continuity and variation in these skills in the Quebec City area.
