This paper attempts to show that, in spite on their length, the novels of Alexandre Dumas, and The Three Musketeers in particular, constitute an ideal gateway to the collective imaginary of the 19th Century. Indeed, Dumas, arguably more so than any other French writer of his century, is an ideal link between literary, national, and cultural histories. Various teaching strategies are considered in the concluding pages.

To teach this 1890 novel, we use pages from Zola's Dossier préparatoire, "Tempérament" from the Grand Dictionnaire universel du XIXe siècle, various critics of the novel, an article on codes in conflict in the novel, notes on descriptive theory, a few pictures linked to the novel, a sketch by C. Bertrand-Jennings, and two audio clips. Beside oral textual analyses, and oral presentations (handed in later written), we treat the illusion of the real, the novel's reversal of its quasi-scientific givens, and a new approach to reading description.

Michaux, who according to Zao Wou-ki was the only French poet who truly understood Chinese art, integrated Chinese ideographs in his own poetic and artistic practice. In this article, we distinguish between two types of ideographs (ideographs that we know as such and pseudoideographs) in two of the poet’s texts and argue that the two types of ideographs are respectively endowed with two sorts of silence, namely ideographic silence and pseudoideographic silence.

In the last couple of years, the intercultural has become a key concept in the area of foreign language didactics in China. Learning a language does not mean just having some linguistic competence but means also mastering appropriate intercultural behaviours. This is all the more true with advanced learners of French as they will need to communicate effectively in professional situations. Can the introduction of authentic documents serve as an effective way to introduce an intercultural approach? Is it possible to use authentic documents right from the early stages of language learning? These are some of the questions we will try to answer in this article, based on the experience of using television advertising in a first year university French course.

The COVID-19 pandemic rushed licensure and certification institutions, as well as many university programs, to integrate Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in their practices to allow for remote administrations of their exams independent of distancing measures. The Black Ice covered in this manuscript is the integration of ICTs to allow remote administration of high-stakes assessments in terms of its development, administration, and monitoring with the aim to promote the validity of score interpretation.
