In 1982, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five's song “The Message” radically changed rap music, in both form and content. It is the starting point for the first great fracture in hip-hop's history. This study traces the evolution that led to this transformation, and the immediate impact it had on artists such as Run-DMC, Rakim, and KRS-ONE, by focusing on the texts and the master of ceremonies (MCs) that perform them. Additionally, the study defines the transition from spoken word poetry that is specifically intended to be performed to written poetry as the result of a reflection on both the form and the content it transmits. From the first party organized by Kool Herc to the single “It's Like That” by Run-DMC, the different phases leading from the Old School to the New School are exposed, with an emphasis on the big movements and tendencies. Special attention is also given to the relationship between the MC and the disc-jockey, since this seems to be the main cause leading to the transformations, while being the source of the conflict that will lead to a fracture in 1985. Even though the historical range of the studied corpus seems narrow, the period between 1973 and 1985 is a source of many struggles and questionings that provide insight into the current state of hip-hop, and maybe, of the music scene at large.

This article is a case study about the presence of English in the mainstream Quebec rap. With a blended approach mixing literature and sociolinguistics, it aims at providing an overview of Koriass' and Loud's albums in nomination during the 2019 edition of the ADISQ gala. With the data retrieved from the overview, we are analyzing the themes of the self, the québécité as well as the portrayal of violence in the rap industry. This analysis of heterolingual exchanges shows that within the rap of Koriass and Loud English only completes a French base. French remains the dominant language despite the use of English.

AbstractRaï, Social Norm and Religious ReferenceOne usually hears that Raï praises alcohol and " free love ". That wouln't mean anything if one didn't see how thoses topics and other ones, grow by reference to social rules, especially religious norms. The quality of Raï spleen depends, in part, on this psychological position of religious " overhang ". The songs of Raï present candidly the contradiction between impulses and constraints, between personnal desires and socio-religious norms, between competing ideologies. As the word " Raï " shows (it means " opinion ", " free choice "), the human beeing is free, free with his choices, but also with not choosing anything and trying to manage the irreconcilable. Such an existential do-it-yourself, such a tight-rope uprise of individuality often happens through the manipulation of the religious referent.Key words : Virolle, song, love, marginality, norm, religion, woman

One of the most fascinating aspects of the highly gifted Quebecer known to us as Louis Dantin is the story of his life. He was aware of this, as is shown by his concern for providing autobiographical elements in his correspondence, his lyrical works, his “autobiographical sketch” and Les enfances de Fanny, which he describes as an “autobiographical novel”. Although he did not dare publish some of these texts during his life, his example inspired many writers of the interwar period. This article examines the various components of Dantin's autobiographical discourse while suggesting that the complexity of this man, who was ahead of his time, is clearly greater than the image he was able to reveal in his written works.
