Widely known for its award winning movies, Igloolik ISUMA Productions has established a virtual network, which today distributes worldwide, images and interviews on Aboriginal issues. However, the Inuit firm has more fundamental objectives, such as those of being a spokesman for many contemporary claims, not only in the cultural domain (preservation of heritage, etc.), but also in the economic and political spheres where indigenous rights are threatened, as by mineral exploitation This paper attempts to show how, in Northern Canada, an electronic media such as IsumaTV plays a decisive role in the establishment of effective indigenous connections. Through a content analysis of IsumaTV, the authors examine to what extent these cultural products can nurture and transform images in cyberspace, while at another level, and for many reasons, local effects are much more limited. In this process, the religious domain seems to be at the center of these streams as it gives more strength to Aboriginal claims.

This article examines how the print media reported the reactions of First Nations and Inuit since the announcement of the “Plan Nord” (September 28, 2008) until December 2011. After an initial section on the comments of Ghislain Picard, spokesman for the Assembly of the First Nations of Quebec and Labrador, the information is grouped by nation. We will see that, while having similarities, the various reactions are influenced by the political situation of the nations concerned, and particularly by the fact that they have, or not, signed territorial agreements with the Quebec government. However, beware of certain biases of the press influenced by the definition given by the Quebec government of its relations with First Nations and Inuit. Many journalists rarely venture into the communities. Their attention is not engaged until the Aboriginal leaders come forward to express their aspirations and concerns.

How can we measure the impact of actions taken to improve the active offer of health and social services in French to francophone minority communities? A questionnaire was created to measure firstly individual behaviours of active offer and secondly the perception of organisational support toward it. Content validity of the Active Offer of French Language Services in Minority Context Measure was determined through a literature review, expert consultations and a Canada-wide Delphi survey. Reliability was examined with data collected from recent graduates in health and social services. The questionnaire shows good internal consistency and further studies with a larger sample are necessary to determine its temporal stability. These are the first steps toward measuring the development of active offer behaviours following educational or organisational change activities that favour French-language services. It is also likely to help researchers study the determinants of such behaviours.

Unassisted childbirth (Freebirth) is defined as the deliberate decision to give birth without professional assistance. Born in the middle of the xxth century, this movement has since grown and gained exposure because of the Internet and an ever more restrictive – even litigious – perinatal climate. Written from a feminist standpoint that is both academic (based on a handful of studies) and personal (the author was a Freebirther), the article provides an overview of Freebirthing and accounts for the support system petitioned by women standing on the edge of alternative childbearing practices.

This article suggests that there are reasons to be concerned about the way relationship history impacts credibility assessments for refugee claims based on sexual orientation. Decision makers' written assessments often reveal insufficient consideration of the psychosocial barriers that may impinge on sexual minority refugees' ability to testify on their relationships. The multinational and multicultural setting of refugee-status proceedings poses unique challenges for sexual minority refugee claimants in having their membership in a particular social group established. Understanding and expressing sexual identity spans cultural divides, and therefore, a claimant's expressed identity may not match the decision maker's expectations. Notions of love and intimacy may also be culturally construed, and therefore expectations of how these notions manifest in long-term relationships may be inappropriate in the context of refugee status determination. This article emphasizes that implausibility findings concerning claimants' relationships should be made cautiously. Decision makers should not assume that sexual minorities in countries in which homosexuality is stigmatized or criminalized are devoid of the volition to have same-sex partners. Nor should they assume that sexual minority refugees are necessarily willing to embrace same-sex relationships soon after arriving in Canada. Evaluating same-sex relationships according to the Cass Staged-Identity model can lead to persistent doubts about claimants' credibility. In sum, this article attempts to canvass the potential pitfalls of Canadian adjudication methods in cases of sexual minority refugee claimants, and to propose recommendations for evaluating testimony and evidence of these relationships.

Based on interviews with the protagonists of the Maple Spring student movement, this text seeks to identify the conditions that allowed for the emergence of a student and social movement of unprecedented scale in spring 2012. A deliberate focus on combative unionism and direct democracy are seen as key factors in the consolidation and persistence of the movement. Further, the demands for social change made by this movement are situated in the context of the institutional impasse or deadlock that characterizes Quebec society under the reign of neoliberalism, and that has the effect of neutralizing any attempts to realize institutional reforms that aim to advance social justice.

The rise of the maker movement, including hackathons and fablabs, provides new opportunities for companies to boost innovation by collaborating with creative, tech-savvy and intrinsically motivated people, known as makers. This paper connects open innovation and maker movement research by investigating how makers and companies can work together within an industry-specific makerspace setting. We use a qualitative case study design and focus on the German photonics industry. Our results shed light on the expectations makers and companies have when considering a collaboration, along with the perceived benefits and risks. Furthermore, we uncover crucial design factors for industry-specific makerspaces.
