This essay begins with the Wendat notion of ohtehra’ to develop an approach to contemporary Indigenous art as a process of “ré-ensauvagement” at work in the practices of Kent Monkman (Cree/Irish) and Caroline Monnet (Anishinaabe/French), among others. The author, relying on the theoreticians Deborah Doxtator (Kanien’kehá:ka), Georges Emery Sioui (Wendat) and Taiaiake Alfred (Kanien’kehá:ka), also proposes an analysis of Indigeneity in North America as a “glocal fact of Americity”.

AbstractThe undocumented Algerian immigrants the ethnologist met in 2000s ask him a riddle. The aim of this article is to make a report on the construction of a multilocated ethnography in the case of irregular Algerian migrations and of what it makes you understand about the sense of these migrations. The historical continuity of the migration like the “daughter of colonialism”, Algerian geopolitical conjuncture and France's immigration policy represent the frame and the context of a so-called irregular migration. Jammed in the contradiction between a security policy and a humanitarian treatment, these migrants waver between the illegal immigrants appearance, the victim or the defrauder. But we also analyse how the figure of the economic, familial or victim migrant can be mixed and doubled with a migratory project in search of recognition and social success here and there.

AbstractIn this article, we propose that the meaning of predicative nouns can be studied within the theory of "support verbs" ("light verbs" in English, or "complex predicates"). According to this theory, nouns are predicates whose basic form is a support verb construction. For example, the basic form for respect is the sentence with have as support verb: N0 has respect for N1. Every meaning of a given noun can be associated with a construction of this kind. In this article, we study the way of classifying the different meanings of nouns like grammaire or géographie, and the way of relating them by mean of the compounds grammatical study, grammatical structure.

AbstractBetween nation and ethnic group, official language communities in a minority context in Canada are often indecisive in their identity quest. The article proposes the cultural autonomy model as a framework to analyze the identity struggles and the vitality of these communities and focuses on two elements of cultural autonomy in reference to one of these official language groups, the Francophone and Acadian communities. Following an analysis of political mobility and of the governance structures of these communities, it is observed that the prevalent governance models based on a partnership with the State do not seem to mobilize the communities and may even infringe upon their involvement in a cultural autonomy process necessary for their community vitality.

AbstractThis article examines how remembrance of the « Sonderbund » civil war was managed. This war, which took place in 1847, was a founding event of contemporary Switzerland. This article shows that national healing subsequently took place notably by covering up this conflict, as well as by increasingly valuing or even overvaluing the mythical history of Switzerland's origins. Thus Swiss cohesion was rebuilt by considering the past only in a partial manner. The strong legacies of federalism and the infancy state of democracy had a pacifying effect. This example raises questions regarding the curative value usually attributed today to the expression of sorrow. It suggests rather that the most important is to ensure that the modes of conciliation chosen are adapted to the reality of the society to which they are to be applied.

AbstractIn sub-Saharan Africa, armies of « practices » coexist from now on with armies of the « needs for security ». The peacekeeping training for African armies seems to be a correct answer to the immediate requests for security. The appropriation of the concomitant changes by the body politic (State, local organizations…) and the beneficial feedback of these experiences lead some states, like Nigeria, Ghana and Cameroon to experience a reform of the armies based on the adaptation of their training. At the same time the considerable amount of foreign troops, among them many European, being based in these countries may underline the relativity of African states' sovereignty.
