The dramatic poem Tragedy of Man (1859-1860) by Imre Madách enjoys the greatest recognition within Hungarian dramatic literature. It relates significantly to Hungary's national history, whether it be to the struggles for independence and national identity, or to the preponderant role of language and culture in the survival of the nation. During the twentieth century and until the beginning of the twenty-first century, the history of the mise-en-scène of Tragedy is one of the most exciting in the history of Hungarian theater.
