Since 2010, new research formats such as hackathons and data sprints have been developed in the field of digital research in sociology. Over a noticeably brief period, these events propose to analyze digital or digitized data and present the initial results. However, we have observed that these “short-form method » often relegate in the shadows the preparation of the data to focus on for the exploration and the visualization of datasets. As the coordinators of a research hackathon on the Digital Republic consultation, we observed the preparations required for this kind of event. Observations that highlight the critical work of « data shaping ». From the collection of data to its availability for the event, these processes are invisible by these short-form methods. Moreover, this study reveals a set of political stakes around data and open data, which are included in the technical choices made by the actors during this whole process.

Textual research : using the discotext 1 CD-Rom textual data base. The CD-rom DISCOTEXT 1, published by CNRS / Hachette, combines a data- base of 300 literary works with a amputer program for its analysis. The total corpus consists of a representative selection of the French literary production between 1827 and 1923, resulting in 42 millions word- occurrences which DISCOTEXT 1 's program enables to explore in an original way. The user has access to a large number of criteria and tools to define his topic and corpus, and can use two to three parameters in his search for occurrences or co-occurrences. The program enables the user to accomplish in a few minutes and with no risk of error textual investigations which would require months of work using a traditional method (trad. : Géraldine Dériès).

This paper reports on a quasi-experimental research investigating the effects of using a writing assistance software (WAS) on the students’ quality of writing. Three hundred and four teenagers enrolled in French public schools in Quebec participated in this study. Students wrote a first text by hand, and then a second text under one of the following modalities: 1) handwriting; 2) word processor (WP) only; 3) WP and WAS; 4) WP, a WAS and prior training. Data has been analyzed from a quantitative perspective (ANOVAs, paired t-tests). Findings showed that WAS users made less grammar and spelling mistakes than their counterparts did. However, they tended to make more vocabulary mistakes. On the other hand, students using only WP did less well with digital tool than by hand. Overall, these findings emphasize that learning to write in a digital environment is a complex process: such complexity should be taken into account in schools.
