On the edges of the floor.Professional identity of salaried on-line brokers.What connection is there between objective organization of labor and definition of an identity? How can a professional environment construct itself in the shadow of a socially valorized group? The article attempts to answer this question by studying the on-line brokerage sector. While the work of employees looking after client relations is effectively organized like that of a call center, they recreate a social environment reminiscent of the market floor. Once again we find Merton's classic opposition between membership group and reference group. The frequent references to the traditional stock exchange stand in contrast to membership in the client-relations group. Thus these employees create a marginal identity for themselves, in the sense that they belong, without totally belonging, to the world of finance, and search for a status linked to the prestigious activities of the sector (financial advice and risk management).
