During the last two decades, several classical questions in the philosophy of medicine have been renewed. Previously unexplored angles of research are now subject of intense debates, and traditional questions have been reinterpreted considering these new developments. By examining these recent themes through the contributions of French-speaking researchers, this dossier aims to contribute to the development of this “new” philosophy of medicine and psychiatry, to shed new light on some of its still little-known fields and objects, as well as its emerging currents and issues, and to advance classical debates from new angles.

AbstractAre the user's expectations the same with regard to all dictionaries? To address this issue, the author compares two general French language dictionaries (The Nouveau Petit Robert and The Petit Larousse) with the four main medical dictionaries used by medical translators. He proposes a critical analysis of the corpus of these dictionaries as well as the various components of a typical entry.

The need to make health services more patient-centered is the subject of many conversations about the reforms needed for a more adequate, humane and respectful health service. This article begins with a historical perspective of the history of medicine, medical ethics and the social relationship to narrative, before discussing the difficulty of applying these notions to the field of transplantation and also the gaps in their implementation. Finally, it explores how integrating creative writing workshops into the care pathway could be helpful for a patient-centered approach.

In Switzerland, psychiatrists asked to assess the fitness for work of disability insurance benefit applicants have been repeatedly criticized. Challenges to the quality of their assessment reports have led to something akin to a professionalization of assessment, in a context where psychological disability has become a public health problem and is the subject of increasing judicial control. Doctors directly involved in this process are divided on the fairest ways to conduct assessments and, more importantly, on the consequences of a policy that undermines the social rights of mental health patients. This paper is based on an analysis of their writings and a legal case.

The author is the witness of a historic period of the psychiatry in the province of Quebec in Canada, widely francophone. He describes the context, the training in psychiatry, and the care. In Quebec, in the 1950s, the psychiatry did not exist as such as speciality. There was however a discipline: the neuropsychiatry. It was managed by the neurologists who agreed to take care of cases of psychiatry, which few doctors wanted to treat at this moment. The religious and rural society in Quebec of the 1950s got ready for the “Revolution tranquille”. The latter finally burst after 1960. But the artistic environment was already in full excitement, and from 1948, it showed its opposition to the values which were current with the publication of the Refus global. Among the signatories of the latter, we find Bruno Cormier as medical student who will become, after 1950, a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst. To become a psychiatrist, it was necessary to be trained as an intern in a residency program in the USA, UK or in France. The residency in the United States in the 1950s represented a great adventure for the young doctors of Quebec, especially for the French speakers. At the end of 1950s, the pharmacology emerged. However, he described his own experience as an observer or an actor with ECT, Sakel cure and about the lobotomy.
