This paper is based on a research project which is now being pursued in the Quebec hospitals, the topic being the rules which are produced to rule the acquisition and use of costly equipment, through the decision-making process. The notion of rationalization has proved to be central, as one main source of rules. Three types of legal and/or non-legal rules have been identified: constitutional, procedural and substantive rules. A special attention has been brought to the main producers of norms, who happen to be the producers and bearers of the management culture in the hospitals: the administrators and the biomedical engineers. Some manifest and latent functions of the rules in the functioning of the hospitals have been especially analyzed. To conclude, some limitations to procedural justice are identified and the distinction between procedural justice and distributive justice is made explicit.

Since 2023, at the St-Raphaël Palliative Care Home in Montreal, Dr. Catherine Courteau (palliative medicine) and Achille Volpi (palliative care acupuncturist) have been offering writing workshops inspired by narrative medicine. Designed for end-of-life patients, caregivers, and the bereaved, they allow them to explore illness and grief through the Amherst Writers & Artists method and personal narratives. Here, we hope to share one of our workshops, which aim to provide a safe space to reconstruct disrupted life stories, strengthen resilience, and preserve dignity. Structured around various themes, the workshops encourage introspective reflection and non-judgmental sharing, transforming writing into a tool for continuity and humanization.

The General Medicine Department of the University of Liège has developed a competency framework. The present study aims at finding out how internship supervisors intend to use this framework. In order to identify the predictable elements of the supervisors' intentions, we use Ajzen's (1985, 1991) theory of planned behavior. To this end we designed a questionnaire that directly and indirectly measuresthe various parameters of the model, i.e. behaviors, social norms and perceived control, on the basis of seven interviews with internship supervisors. The questionnaire was then submitted to the population of internship supervisors. We obtained 68 replies. After having performed hierarchical linear regressions, we came to the conclusion that behaviors, social norms and perceived control makeup 83 % of the intention to use the competency framework. Other analyses enabled us to determine the levers and obstacles which directly influence such intention.

The Union québécoise de réhabilitation des oiseaux de proie (UQROP) is a raptor rehabilitation program that has been running in the province of Québec since 1986. It was established with the help of the Faculté de médecine vétérinaire (the veterinary college at the Université de Montréal), the Macdonald Raptor Research Center (McGill University), and the ministère du Loisir, de la Chasse et de la Pêche du Québec. The program covers the whole of the province and nearly 54% of the cases handled are referred by wildlife officers. To date, over 8 000 birds have passed through the program, including specimens of all 27 of the raptor species occurring in the province. The release rate is about 42%, and of the 2 285 banded birds released, 72 (3%) band returns have been documented. As raptors are protected under provincial law, injured or dead individuals must be declared, and these are brought to the network's facilities by volunteer drivers, or are sent in via air and ground transportation systems. A post-graduate training program in zoological medicine at the veterinary college has lead to a number of scientific publications based on data from the birds received, and an environmental education program, developed in 1990, has helped inform millions of people about raptors. Since its outset, the rehabilitation program has made a solid contribution to raptor conservation.

AbstractIn its preventive action, medicine opens up new ways of thinking and doing on questions of health and disease. It does so through its many public health monitoring programs, through constant, day-to-day circulation of fresh data concerning health risks or through the identification and objective and scientific transmission of health risks to individuals. Medicine then requires these persons to invest in a search for meaning, but without really being able to take an independent approach to their own experience of the disease. In this paper, we suggest that the scientific discourse on risk, particularly as regards the treatment of high blood pressure, results in exposing the patient to a risk, namely that of being constrained in making sense of his disease.

Dependence on the Internet and video games would have an impact on academic performance and mental health. Objective Highlight some of the interest factors in a first-year medical student population who will be subjected during their studies and future to the intensive use of these technologies.Method A self-questionnaire was proposed, from a free access link from February to March 2014, to all first-year medical students at the University of Namur in Belgium. It consisted of questions related to socio-demographic data, Perceived Stress Scale (PSS 14), the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), the Problem Video Game Playing (PVP) and the Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).Results According to the Internet Addiction Test (IAT), 1% of the students are addicted to the Internet and 24,4% have occasional problematic use. According to Problem Video Game Playing (PVP), 11,4% of the students playing video games are problem gamblers. The data also show significantly higher scores for problematic use of the Internet and video games among stressed students, depressed students and those with poor academic performance. Conclusion We draw attention to the necessary debate between the rational use and the problematic use of new technologies as well as the need for longitudinal prevention from the beginning of studies.
