The objective of this article is to better understand the workings of expertise by turning to history. To borrow David Kennedy's expression, how do “struggles of articulation” take place? How do some experts succeed in imposing their own vision of the world and in giving out solutions to respond to ongoing crises? To reflect on these questions, we will closely look at the legal-theological debates that took place at the turn of the sixteenth century on the legitimacy of the transatlantic slave trade. We will examine how the first members of the School of Salamanca—the very ones who are considered to be the “fathers of international law”—were able to place the slave trade in the perspective of an ethic or law of commerce.

The Women Musicians of the World symposium, organized by the Observatoire interdisciplinaire de création et de recherche en musique and the Centre des musiciens du monde, was held to explore the career paths of migrant women musicians. Talks and roundtables brought together researchers in sociology, anthropology, musicology, and ethnomusicology as well as musicians who have immigrated to Montreal. Their combined scientific and experience-based knowledge revealed a series of recurring difficulties and challenges for women in music: the invisibility of their work, gender differentiation and discrimination within a predominantly male environment, as well as issues related to the female body and geographic mobility. However, specific experiences, profiles, and strategies were also identified on the basis of migratory paths. This field note summarizes the main findings and limitations of the symposium's discussions before highlighting some of the many efforts still required to better understand the realities of such artists.

Work plays an important role in the lives of both societies and individuals. It serves as both a means for
social integration and a source of identity, notwithstanding historical contexts marked by precarious
employment. Whereas much international research and many comparative studies have addressed
young people's relationship to work, the existing literature tends to paint a rather uniform picture of
youth. This article begins with a focus on the unique aspects of the relationship to work among vulnerable
youth, which leads to an exploration of the processes by which these individuals develop agency.
Coupled with inductive qualitative analysis, the systematic international perspective provided by
interviews conducted with vulnerable youth (dropouts, immigrants, Indigenous persons, rural residents,
and overqualified individuals) in Quebec and France shows that labour market participation not only
remains important to these youth but constitutes a hub around which their lives acquire structure and
meaning. They experience inactivity very negatively and express strong criticism of social assistance.
Although vulnerable youth are acutely affected by material insecurity and often cite the desire to earn
money as a reason for working, financial considerations remain complex by involving a variety of
dimensions. Finally, despite the hardships they experience, young people tend to describe the labour
market in pragmatic and optimistic terms.

The analysis of instantaneous water discharge and suspended sediment loads in the watershed of the Boumessaoud Wadi (118 km2), for the period from September 1988 to August 2004, revealed the existence of annual and seasonal variability in sediment transport in this Mediterranean semi-arid catchment and demonstrated the impact of flood events, which contribute to about 71% of the overall solid tonnage in the autumn and up to 97% in the spring. The results of this analysis indicate that the annual average specific erosion is about 518 t∙km-2∙y-1. The methodological approach adopted consists of finding a regression model capable of explaining the sediment load (QS) as a function of the discharge (QL), tested by studying this relation at various temporal scales. The produced models are a power relationship type (QS = aQLb), where water discharge explains overall more than 80% of the variance in sediment yield. The identification of periods that are sediment-productive in this dynamic erosion system was studied by analysis of the evolution of the sediment concentrations in the stream. The objective of this modeling is to overcome the shortcomings of the sediment transport data available for our studied catchment.
