AbstractThe text displays how the isotopie of war molds and run through the plots of V. Y. Mudimbe's four novels. Thus, Mudimbe's novels assume, through their intention of relating the event of war, an epic dimension. More precisely, the occurrence of the imaginary and historical coincidence will be constantly intermingled, their alternate actualization in the novels provoking a disorder of narrative webs that will permit only one pluralistic interpretation through the historical references that mark the direction of the texts, enlarging them to the point where they acquire the grandiose dimension of an epic. From the rumbling of the stop consonants and the lisp of the sibilants emerge all the harshness of war, the permanency of the body, the gush of the phallus, for those are equally part of the story.

Abbé Alphonse-Louis Constant (1810-1875) was a little romantic who developed a Mariology, new for his time, based on a political theology. He held that the French Revolution had opened the way for the era of the Paraclete, which saw the Holy Virgin incarnated in humanity. The Second Coming, which necessitated the earthly establishment of the celestial Jerusalem, could not come to pass without the help of woman, wife and mother of society. This social utopia, supported by an eminently poetic and mystical discourse from a heretic who quickly strayed into occultism, nevertheless foreshadowed the Immaculate Conception dogma of Pius ix and the social doctrine of Leo xiii. By identifying woman's national destiny with the figure of Mary, the author proposes to re-center society on the spiritual authority of woman.

AbstractAIDS, Syphilis, and the Process of Stigmatisation The Historical Roots of Policy and PréjudiceThis article describes some of the similarities and différences between the épidémie of venereal syphilis in the late 15'th and early 16'th centuries and the AIDS épidémie of the last décade. It is argued hère that the contemporary process of stigmatization of persons with AIDS is partly a syntactical process of language which is rooted in the earlier syphilis épidémie. The resuit is an unconsciously constrained manner of thinking and policy formulation in which stigmatized individuals are made to buttress an increasingly problematic ideology by simultaneously representing divine reproof and évidence of moral decay. Illustrations are drawn form récent policy in British Columbia.

In order to better understand the relations of domination, this article aims to present a critical reflection of the masculinity studies from the intersectionality approach. As a main projects of social justice the feminist and masculinity studies have traditionally challenged not only masculine domination but other forms of social oppression as well. Emphasizing on the central role played by the power relations over knowledge construction regarding the relations of domination, we seek to explore the points of convergence and tension in the processes of comprehension regarding social inclusion and exclusion. Alternatively we present some examples of knowledge contributions constructed from the margins, and taking in to account the diversity and the excluded.

“Street gangs” have been a source of political and police concern in Canada for almost twenty years. This concern led to the development of two successive intervention plans in Quebec in the late 2000s. In several cities in Quebec, community consultation groups (tables de concertation) on gangs were created. The researchers, having learned about the difficulties one of those tables was having in clarifying its mandate, conducted semi-structured interviews with its members (police, youth centre workers, members of community organizations, individuals from the schools). The interviews specifically addressed the gap between the police definition of the phenomenon of street gangs adopted by the table and the “realities on the ground” that they had to deal with – “realities” about which there was no consensus. These gaps raise a number of concerns that affect both the purpose of the table and the legitimacy of its concerted actions.

AbstractBased on the concepts of symbolic value and legitimacy and on materialist feminist theory, the reading suggested here of Un habit de lumière (1999), Anne Hébert's last novel, postulates that Hébert is presenting a variety of identity-related alienations linked to the capitalist system, and that in this sense she is taking a stand with regard to the system. For each of the four major characters (Rose-Alba Almevida, Pedro Almevida, Miguel Almevida and Jean-Ephrem de la Tour), the author examines economic production, the benefits obtained from it and the use made of these benefits in terms of expenditure, exchange or investment. These observations are related to sex/gender identity (man/woman, masculine/feminine), class identity, ethnic identity and identity based on the characters' age groups, as well as the narrative space assigned to each.
