SUMMARYUnemployment and joblessness are extremely disruptive among youth and the more they continue, the more they may cause deep troubles to the different aspects of the mental health of those same young people. In this article, first the effects of unemployment on the physical health of the young is treated, and the impact of unemployment on the decade of the thirties is compared with that of unemployment in the eighties. Then we look at the reactions to employment, the three stages crossed by adolescents in search of work and the attacks on the mental health of the young, that is : independence, the reaction of worry, the diffusion of identity, self esteem, guilt and shame, anxiety and fear, anger, depression ; the effect on family relations, the disruptions in the organization of free time, the rise in the rate of suicide, the growth in drug and alcohol consumption, and the rise in criminality.

SUMMARYThe authors, a psychiatrist and a psychologist, provide an overview of how little understanding and research exist concerning the readaptation and professional réintégration of the mentally ill. The subject matter highlights the specific problems experienced by people plagued by emotional illnesses. The study also presents a case history which illustrates how "professional withdrawal" takes place for these people, in other words how their career is interrupted and/or how they experience the aftermath of the loss of a stable job.In conclusion, the authors recommend that a new branch of psychiatry dealing with work be opened, that a new professional role in psychiatry be established following what already exists at Louis-H Lafontaine Hospital and, eventually, that changes be made to the status of mentally ill patients and to their being labeled handicapped. The authors also recommend that research be undertaken on emotionally ill people who are victims of professional withdrawal, in order to properly assess the seriousness of the problem.

The terms action-science and praxeology designate an approach that, since its inception twenty years ago, has helped renew the relationship between practice, education, and research. An analysis of the difficulties encountered by hundreds of practitioners who began using the reflection-in-action method as part of an exercise in praxeology leads to the discovery of an important factor in explaining the problems in the dialogue of practice, education, and research: the lack of a valid discourse of practice. Four major difficulties encountered by practitioners who wish to name what they really do in practice are presented and analyzed. There follows a discussion of the consequences for the dialogue desired.

The concept of the death drive – discovered by Freud at the beginning of the 20th century in the aftermath of WWI and as the hatred and the destructive drive that would be unleashed during WWII were rising – gives us a tool to ponder the new problems that we face today with the violent outbreak of a new extremist Islamist ideology: literalist Wahhabism. This ideology is based on a reinterpreted and fanaticized religious discourse that advocates ultra-violence and terror with a propaganda discourse that seeks to do away with democracy and threatens civilization. Similarities between Maoist ideology and Nazi ideology will also be exposed in order to better analyze this new destructive ideology.

The result of a one-year pilot project in an adult palliative care unit in Quebec, this article explores the theme of subjective transmission through play. Using clinical vignettes from the journals of therapeutic artists, the authors describe the relationship between end-of-life patients and clowns as well as the narrative forms at work in the specific context of palliative care visits. How do these sessions with therapeutic clowns support the transmission of existential reflections, fears, learning and dimensions of the patient's autobiographical identity? What is told and transmitted in the presence of these artists suggests ways to enter into relationship through humour and sometimes laughter, but especially through the transposition by metaphor of important themes for the patient and their relatives.

There are an increasing number of Westernized countries where legislation allows end-of-life patients to choose assisted death (e.g., euthanasia, assisted suicide or medical aid in dying). Yet, choosing assisted death also has an impact on loved ones and family members. What are the particularities of caring for a person at the end of life and grieving the deceased in the context of assisted death? This article reflects on medical assistance in dying by discussing the presence or absence of family members at the moment of death, as well as assisted death as a potential facilitator or inhibitor of end-of-life care and bereavement.

At the heart of humanistic psychotherapy, especially in the existential approach, lies the search for authenticity. The clinical literature reports the intensity of traumatic suffering, which may even take the form of suicidal ideation, when a being is hindered in this journey. We believe that this theme is central to the lives of trans people. In this article, we present some conditions considered to be essential for accompaniment of the gender identity research process, through the perspective of the humanistic psychology of the self, in which the capacity for self-actualization is a central element of the therapeutic work. Using a combination of theoretical essay and hermeneutic methodology, the following text will present theoretical reflections on these themes, adding the reflexivity of the authors, all three of whom work in clinical psychology (the first identifying as a transgender woman and the other two as cisgender women).

This article presents the process that led to the development and implementation of an online education program which aims to help stepfamily couples enrich their relationship as well as the relations in their stepfamily. Reviews of the literature on both the challenges faced by stepfamily couples and parents, and the prevention programs offered to this population, were conducted. The conclusions drawn from these reviews form the basis of the online education program The stepfamily: A team to build which is briefly described in this article.
