For centuries, women have suffered to be beautiful. Amongst women, the passionate quest for beauty and the hardships endured to attain it are still very much alive today. This article attempts to explain the persistence of this tradition by tracing the principal factors which have contributed to the increasing importance attached to feminine beauty since the beginning of the twentieth century and by demonstrating that, as in the past, beauty still confers a real advantage to women.

This article presents the case study of a conflict situation in a French social organization, based on a novel conceptualization of interpersonal conflict in an organization that articulates four dimensions: the analysis of conflict in terms of escalation processes in interpersonal communication; psychosociological phenomena such as social facilitation and identity processes and group dynamics; individual trajectories in terms of habitus; and contextual factors, including cultural dimensions (based on the notion of field). This conceptual framework is applied to the case of a social center in France and shows that the conflict is centered on relational disjunctions that are not specific to French culture and that are not controlled by the management. Management recommendations are deduced from this.

Proceeding from a narrative multidisciplinary doctoral thesis, this article examines some of the strategies implemented within Ontarian French speaking households in an effort to socialize girls of French-Canadian ancestry to femininity. Revealing of the gender archetypes instilled under the influence of dominant cultural and institutional ideologies (ex. traditionalist, modernist, and globalizing discourses on the Franco-Ontarian identity), the autopsied memories are recounted from the viewpoint of six white adult participants who grew up in the Ottawa area (ON, Canada). The following themes emerge : markers of a tomboy identity ; maternal control over choices regarding clothing or hair and weight ; concern over appearances for the purposes of social legitimacy and belonging ; and gendered distribution of domestic roles and responsibilities. Recommendations are then issued for the attention of researchers, professors and workers in the field of social work.

Objective Personality disorders and intimate partner violence (IPV) are two problems recognized as major public health issues associated with serious individual and societal repercussions. Several studies have documented the links between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and IPV; however, we know very little about the specific pathological traits contributing to IPV. The study aims to document the phenomenon of IPV committed and suffered in persons with BPD and to draw profiles from the personality facets of the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD).

With its preventive approach, La Maison buissonnière has been welcoming babies and pre-oedipal-aged children, accompanied by their families, for the past 30 years in Montreal. It has always taken an “off the beaten track” perspective—both with respect to current psychoanalytic practices and in terms of the prevailing socio-educational practices in Quebec. Our manner of hosting families is based on the teachings of Françoise Dolto and on early developmental theory. Our practice aims at allowing the baby or toddler to “unwind their question” and at helping the parent hear it. This way, misunderstandings between the baby and their family are cleared up in a timely fashion and do not carry the risk of turning into symptoms later in the child's life. This article aims to describe the principles underlying the work of this institution's “hosts” and to illustrate these principles with examples drawn from our daily practice. It will also present some of the theoretical underpinnings of our work.

Since its introduction, the concept of parental alienation has met with a solid resistance from clinicians as well as the general public. The concept refers to the situation where a child, often after parental separation, rejects one of his parents without justifiable reason. The author proposes the idea that this resistance has to do with the association that exists between this concept and the one concerning false allegations of child sexual abuse. The opponents of the concept suspect it to be a new version of a presumed denial of intra-familial sexual abuse.
