AbstractWe examine religious mobility as it presents itself in Spiritualism, on the level of the actors as well as on the level of symbols. Bricolage, syncretism, movement between religions, as well as the individualisation of religious practices and beliefs, are discussed. The spiritualists presented in this study are motivated by the search for meaning rather than the wish to solve personal problems or to contact a deceased person. We argue that certain practices in Spiritualism convey quite fluid notions of individual identity. Nonetheless, we observe a surprising stability of religious affiliation and belief among certain individuals in Spiritualism. The plural character of religious identities found among spiritualists is compared to what we have found in research on identity in studies of ethnicity and the family.

ABSTRACTThe article focuses on a study conducted in francophone Belgium from 1991 to 1993 involving 172 social service associations in the health care sector. It examined relationships between formal and informal sectors in this area, relationships also described by the actors as market/non-market, state/non-state or working/volunteer. The preliminary study was exploratory and empirical. The study's sponsors were interested in determining what existed between the market and the state, and the analysis led to a reflection on third-party situations — those of the associations, the protagonists and the actors directly involved — and to development of a tetrahedral model. This model replaces the dualistic "formal/informal" image with the metaphor of a "crystallization process" involving six dimensions, encompassing interlinked relationships among four spheres: domestic-private, market, state, and community action.

Using an approach rooted in pragmatic sensibilities and material consisting of interviews and direct observations, we examine the way placement professionals take into consideration components that are not specified in the legal statutory disability insurance regarding job placement, within the space of the personal interview with recipients whose health is impaired. The component considered, which go beyond the actual search for employment regarding job placement, are intended to question recipients' private life and offer them social support to face problems they encounter. The first set of components are questioned in relation to personal data and statutory relevance and the second group are questioned as regards the desirability of having some training in social work for the professionals.

Domestic educational interventions in France are, for the most part, judicially imposed on families. How do parents accept and perceive the professionals who intrude into their personal lives for the good of their children? We met with 15 families twice each at a one-year interval. The families all had in common that they were subjected to several simultaneous domestic interventions: from a specialized educator for an educational measure, and from a social and family intervention technician. The results show that families' cooperation in this constrained context differed depending on the nature of the activity. This criterion was just one of a series of other known factors that were confirmed by the study.
