In a Cancer Treatment Center in Marseille (France), we studied five thousand small texts of supplications written and deposited in a “place of contemplation”. We describe in detail the content of these writings and their various themes: the struggle against illness, the evocation of care paths and the alleviation of fears, thanks, accompaniment and symbolization of death, and requests for help from readers. We analyze how these narratives support patients and their loved ones, and how religious reference builds hope beyond the medical prognosis. We underline how these writings of the self constitute one of the “hidden texts” of the care institution and must be considered as part of a whole range of spiritual care.
