That extreme metal has had a conflictual experience with religion is nothing new. However, extreme metal's engagement with “God” is much more complicated than mere mockery, disdain or satire. This article will explore, through a close analysis of Celtic Frost's Monotheist, and Antediluvian's Cervix of Hawaah and λόγος, the often sincere and thoughtful, yet critical, engagement with God and religion through a very particular voice that I see within the extreme metal ethos. This voice takes the form of deconstructing Christian mythology through the paradoxical aspects of the religious — where the aetiological aspects of a myth are undermined not by reasoned analysis but through the inverted repetition of biblical stories and mythology.

AbstractPsychoactive substance abuse, behavioral disorder and depression during adolescence This article examines coocurrence of three types of problems of adaptation during adolescence : abuse of psychotropic drugs, behavioral disorder (oppositional and behavioral disorders) and feelings of depression (depression and dysthymia). The study also examines behavioral, social as well as family characteristics which, during childhood, distinguish youths with many adaptation problems from those with only one or no problem. More than 1600 youths from all regions of Quebec participated in the study. These youths were around 15,7 years old when they completed an interview aiming at determining the possible presence of abusive use of psychotropic drugs, behavioral problems and feelings of depression. Their behavioral and sociofamilial characteristics had been previously evaluated (between the ages of 6 and 12) with questionnaires answered by parents and teachers. Results reveal that almost 10 % of youths experience two or three adaptation problems. These youths distinguish themselves from those with only one problem on various personal and sociofamilial dimensions in the course of childhood. Those with one problem represent a little more than 25 % of the sample. They also distinguish themselves from the group of youth with no problem on several variables. However, the group of youths with a problem of substance abuse only, is an exception. The discussion underlines the importance of knowing if there is simultaneous presence of several problems and proposes to intervene in a preventive fashion with youths who risk experiencing many problems.

SummaryMarshall McLuhan once described the artistic imagination as an "early warning system" of major shifts in the logic of technological society. For McLuhan, artists are like "probes" of the relationship of technology and culture just because their work is so often at the frontiers of technological experience. If this is so, then there is a contemporary group of Manitoba artists who have much to tell us about emancipatory art and technology since their artistic productions dwell on technology as decay and ecstacy. The Manitoba vision? It's a radically new way of "seeing" the social and cultural impact of technology.

How should we conceptualize the weaknesses in global governance associated with the recent global financial crisis ? We argue that global financial governance has been characterized by a complex overlapping system of communication and coordination. While there have been important successes in this system, its failings can be conceptualized both in terms of a lack of institutional capabilities on the one hand, and failures associated with accountability and representation on the other. These problems are however not unique to the domain of finance, and actually pervade other areas such as the security system and global environmental governance. As such, the failures in global financial governance can be seen as part of broader global governance challenges, with deeper roots and causes than most scholarship is prone to think.

Overlooked for a long time by social science, the quantitative measurement of racism is now back on track, and raises crucial theoretical and methodological issues. Building on the findings and data of the Trajectories and Origins survey (TeO, Insee-Ined, 2008-2009), this article investigates the contribution and the limits of the survey to the empirical and statistical knowledge of discrimination and racism. It offers explanation about under-reporting of experiences of racism. We provide an overview of quantitative sources about racism in France, and then discuss the main findings from TeO on reported racism by immigrants and second generation. We show the interplay between racism and discrimination and their correlation with experiences of othering. Finally, we develop a discussion on processes of subjective account and consciousness of racism based on the personal characteristics and marks that exposed them to racism.

AbstractAlthough psychiatric advance directives (PADs) are grounded in the ethics of autonomy, the relationship between the two is unclear. PADs are legal documents that allow individuals with mental illness to record their treatment preferences should they become incompetent in the future. The relationship between autonomy and PADs has been discussed in ethical, legal, and philosophical terms, but has not been clearly operationalized for clinical purposes. Autonomy is a fundamental ethical value that includes having the independence from outside controlling influences and the mental capacity to direct one's personal actions. Individuals with mental illness sometimes require assistance to understand their ethical and legal rights with respect to autonomous choice, and professional stakeholders need education regarding the importance of autonomy for clinical practice. Competency to consent to treatment is the mental prerequisite that ensures individuals with mental illness are able to complete PADs with insight, whereas autonomy is the value that empowers individuals to work towards their recovery.

AbstractThe authors attack social security policies as they are currently practiced in Europe and North America. They study income distribution and stress its characteristic inconsistancies. They demonstrate that in an analysis of social inequality, its multi-dimensional aspect must be fully considered in order to obtain a true picture. They perform a statistical analysis of incomes in Canada. After studying the implications of the fiscal system, they show the limitations of transfer policies. Finally, they propose several possible approaches for a programme of equality.

In this article, we explore the heart of the debate on the nature of the school-family-community partnership and its underlying rationales. We challenge the underpinnings and uses of the ecosystem which is considered at the root of collaborative practices and parental engagement. By inserting the ecosystem into a metatheory, we place collaborative practices along a continuum that reflects the nature and the degree of interactions between those engaged. Our standpoint looks at this partnership in relation to an ecosystemic perspective that is based on contextual and sociocultural perspective. To illustrate how such an ecosystemic logic can be applied to collaborative practices and parental engagement, we refer to the program Famille, école, communauté, réussir ensemble (FECRE), which was implemented in the province of Quebec between 2002 and 2009.
