The three largest producers of comic strips are described as part of a general survey of the genre. The mangas, a Japanese comic strip collection, seem to rule supreme in Japan, accounting for 40 % of book and magazine sales. In French-speaking Europe, the comic book industry is well established and enjoys remarkable growth when compared to the other types of publishing. The Americans diversified their production, distancing themselves from the traditional superhero comic books. The author of this article is working on a detailed essay about comic strips in libraries. This work is dedicated to the memory of Albert Tabah, who inspired researchers to explore subjects on the fringe.

The landscape of the francophone comics has changed deeply since the 1990s. At the same time, the way French, Belgian and Quebec societies have dealt with religious factors has also been transformed. Indeed, these societies have faced both a religious revival and detachment from religious institutions. Catholicism has been an actor and a subject of comics throughout the XXth century ; what about its treatment in the francophone comics in the past two decades ? To analyse the francophone comics in such a way allows us to point out some trends about Catholicism, in societies which are no more framed by the « parochial civilization » and which have turned to modernity and exculturation.
