This survey looks at musical notation, with transcripts of interviews by composer Marie-Pierre Brasset of the three contemporary Montreal conductors Lorraine Vaillancourt, Véronique Lacroix, and Walter Boudreau. In these three one-on-one interviews, the conductors reveal the particular natures of their relationship with musical notation and share various reflections drawn from their vast experience. The conductors frankly describe the pitfalls in conducting new works, but also express their admiration for the high degree of sophistication in today's systems of musical notation.

After working with Luciano Berio, Francesco Giomi played a decisive role in the development of Tempo Reale, the center for musical research and creation founded by Berio. Under his direction, from 2008 onwards, various fields such as live electronics, sound studies, electroacoustic improvisation and interactivity have become central to the center's activities. In particular, he has set up events such as the Tempo Reale Festival, which have helped to spread electronic music and musical research in Florence, while strengthening international collaborations, including in Quebec.

In this article, the author hypothesizes about the origins of the Montréal/Nouvelles musique Festival (MNM), considering the precursors of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec, organisation for which he was General Director from 1997 to 2002. He also reflects on the Festival's dynamic and its contribution to the musical milieu of Québec, both in the context of related disciplines (dance, theatre, cinema, jazz music) and the extent to which MNM presents an original musical identity or rather an original type of expertise. The analysis reveals that MNM will certainly benefit Québécois music by opening the door to international new music festivals, the principal avenue for showcasing new music on an international scale. But MNM in and of itself cannot be the sole entity responsible for an ad hoc endorsement of "musique québécoise".
