This article examines the consistent difficulties created in Deliège's work by focusing his research around the theme of "the demands of the will." Divided in three parts, this survey of Célestin Deliège's work reveals the author as a musician with a high regard for musicology as an intellectual pursuit. Distinguishing the desires of the musicologist from those of the composer, Deliège accords a central place to the composer's desires because he believes that these concepts preceed and determine styles and ideas in contemporary music. In this article, the author tests the validity of this idea, using the example of Brian Ferneyhough. He further examines the idea that to understand the relationship between the musician's intention (the will of the composer) and musical intention (the will of the work itself), it is necessary to approach the composer through his or her work. While Deliège places the greatest emphasis on the composer's desires, it is perhaps because Cinquante ans de modernité musicale is primarily directed towards composers instead of music amateurs.

AbstractThe present paper discusses the string quartets of R. Murray Schafer in light of some forty musical examples contained in its scores. This overview is conducted in way whereby the unity of the cycle and the individual characteristics of each work are addressed, even its wider poetic and philosophical implications. The authors then propose a number ofaesthetic and musical criteria which they believe to be useful in the appraisal of these string quartets.

How do Balinese gamelan and electroacoustic music intersect? This is the question that young Balinese composer I Putu Arya Deva Suryanegara seeks to elucidate as de facto leader of a movement of mixed creation for gamelan instruments in Indonesia and elsewhere. In this article, four works created in Montreal with Ensemble Giri Kedaton are examined in order to unravel the composer's process. Rather than wiping the slate clean, this repertoire demonstrates the fertile ground that digital technologies provide for exploring Balinese concepts, in continuity with tradition.
