This study aims to describe the similarities and differences in the science interests of males and females from Israeli and Arab Middle Eastern countries, as derived from over 1,000 science questions sent to an international ask-a-scientist site. Our findings indicate that while the stereotypical gender gap in interest persists, and significant differences were found between the age groups, no significant differences were found between science questions that were sent by Israelis and Arabs. Furthermore, no correlation was found between female participation and the state of gender equity in the country, and only 1% of the questions made any reference to country-specific, local, or religious aspects. One may conclude that science interests are gender- and age-dependent but culturally-independent in this asynchronous, open and distant science learning environment. Further research is needed in order to determine if this is a genuine attribute of science interest in ODL environments or an outcome of the digital divide in the region.

Tension is a major issue in the analysis of argumentative discourse in ordinary language. Tension is an operator showing that the speaker is highly involved in her speech, and wants to share her commitments, that is, wants to persuade her audience. This paper proposes a case study of an extremely tense and controversial argument with strong anti-Semitic undertones (§2). The following sections examine the main components of tension: (§3) radicalization of arguments; (§4) exclamations; (§5) rhetorical questions; (§6) emotions. Tension is interpreted as a verdictive operator resisting refutation.

Published by Adolf Brand from 1896 until the rise of Nazism in 1933, Der Eigene was the world’s first homosexual periodical. This article will argue that although many of the ideals espoused in this publication are now considered at best distasteful and at worst inherently wrong and associated with Nazism, there areelements of the publication that are worthy of greater attention in the historiography. I will begin by exploring the publication itself, its ideals and goals, and how it sought to use art to accomplishthem. I will then suggest ways in which Der Eigene challenges our contemporary understanding of homosexuality by tracing clear links from ideas put forth by its contributors to elements of the modernLGBTQ community.

ABSTRACTWe show in this article the existence of endogenous rationing in a leader-follower duopoly with differentiated products. The duopolists compete in both prices and quantities and each may choose a price-quantity pair within the residual demand it faces in equilibrium. Therefore they are involved in a network of strategic interactions and their decisions bear on both prices and quantities, two important characteristics of many real situations. We consider a "linear" model, where the individual demand for a good depends on three parameters [α, β, γ: the intercept and slope of the demand and the substitutability coefficient of the goods], and two strategy spaces: the pairs (price, quantity produced) and the pairs (price, number of consumers to be rationed). In each case, we characterize the residual demand a firm faces and we demonstrate the existence of rationing in equilibrium. We also show that the number of rationed consumers is independent in the two cases considered, of the parameters α and β of the individual demand function. This unanticipated and rather surprising theoretical result could not have been obtained without the help of MACSYMA, a computer program of symbolic manipulation.

AbstractThe Eaton's retail company produced a « virtual voyaging » role for Québécois and in particular Montreal women that involved having access to aspects of the world abroad without having to leave the country. Over time, these « virtual voyaging » opportunities became increasingly elaborate. This article examines four such opportunities Eaton's offered : 1) around the turn of the twentieth century, catalogues offered vivid descriptions of the company's foreign activities and imported merchandise ; 2) after opening its Montreal department store (1925), women were invited to select foreign, especially French, merchandise in a French-inspired architectural environment ; 3) toward the middle of the twentieth century, Doreen Day, globe-trotting Fashion Director and producer of European fashion shows, was promoted as a model for women ; 4) between the 1950s and 1980s, spectacular store promotions were put on that were devoted to the products and culture of specific foreign places. The company successfully reached out to both English and French-speaking customers through these efforts. Eaton's thus brought an important global dimension to the « domestic » task of shopping.
