Le débat entre Turner et Lévi-Strauss et entre leurs écoles a bien accentué les différences entre les deux, mais il a sous-estime leurs ressemblances. Les concepts turnériens de c symbole rituel " et de i drame rituel " sont largement acceptés dans le monde anglo-saxon, surtout dans le cadre de l'anthropologie des religions. Cependant, ces mêmes concepts pourraient nous aider à analyser les textes rituels du point de vue de la production de l'objet esthétique et à fonder une anthropologie esthétique. Alors que la perspective religieuse empruntée par Turner étudie comment l'homme cherche à exprimer l'inexprimable, fart rituel veut, par contre, (comme le dit Barthes) c inexprimer l'exprimable ".
Abstract
The Choice between Uttering the Unutterable and Decomposing What has been Uttered
Intended as an introduction of Victor Turner to French-speaking readers, this article compares him to Lévi-Strauss, underlining not only the differences between the two approaches but also the resemblances. The most important and enduring concepts proposed by Turner were those of < ritual symbol ", and " ritual drama ", apt to produce c catharsis " when efficacious. But this article argues that such catharsis is not necessarily religious; it may equally well be viewed as a response to the production of artwork by imaginative performers. This point is illustrated from Turner's Chihamba. The White Spirit, where Turner's aesthetics yields far more striking insights than his c comparative sym-bology ". In this respect. Turner's approach is compared, in the final sections of the paper, to the aesthetics of Artaud and Barthes.
