Mythe et vécu territorial : Charlevoix à travers l’art du paysage au XIXe siècle.

Résumé

Les représentations du paysage charlevoisien au cours du XIX ^e siècle font une large place aux normes dictées par l'art du paysage européen, britannique en particulier. Le mouvement esthétique romantique interpréta les signes du paysage charlevoisien en référence à une idéologie agriculturiste et anti-urbaine présente à partir de la décennie 1840 en particulier. Le paysage fut intégré à l'idéologie nationale canadienne dans la seconde moitié du XIX^e siècle par les artistes torontois qui recherchaient, à cette époque, l'authenticité des paysages ruraux du Canada. Le paysage charlevoisien fut alors représenté comme un paysage rural authentique du Canada français, ayant su préserver la beauté de son milieu naturel et le mode de vie typique de ses habitants. Ces représentations picturales, en raison des idéologies conservatrices qui les sous-tendent, accordaient peu d'importance au vécu territorial d'une région en mutation rapide au cours de la période 1831-1871, sous l'impulsion de la nouvelle économie urbaine industrielle.

Abstract

Representations of XIX ^th century lanscape of Charlevoix are linked to the norms dictated by European, and particularly British norms of landscape painting. This aesthetic movement and the ideology behind it interpreted the signs of landscape in relation to its agriculturist and anti-urban orientation from 1840 onwards. Charlevoix's landscape was integrated to the national ideology of the expanding Canada in the second half of the century by Toronto's artists seeking for the original rural landscapes of Canada. Charlevoix was seen as an authentic rural landscape of French Canada, who preserved its natural beauty and still reflected the traditionnal way of life of its inhabitants. Those pictorial representations, linked to conservative ideologies, did not reflect the territorial reality of a landscape in rapid change during the period 1831 to 1871, due to the effects of the new urban industrial economy.
