The Canadian Journal of Action Research

Managing editor(s): Marianne Barker (Managing Editor) / Editor(s): Kurt Clausen (Editor-in-Chief)

About

The Canadian Journal of Action Research is an open-access, full-text, peer-reviewed electronic journal intended for elementary, secondary, college and university educators who are concerned with exploring the unity between educational research and practice. While our primary aim is to serve the needs of educators in Canada, we welcome readership and submissions from around the world. To some, action research signifies individual, reflective practice; to others, group empowerment. Action researchers use it as a means of professional development, curriculum reform, and even democratic institutional change. Regardless of the reason, the shared goal of all these approaches is to mend the rift between the researcher and the practitioner.

Peer Review Process

All research reports and articles are sent to at least two referees representative of differing viewpoints in the practitioner-researcher community. Reviewers use a standardized review form that is designed to provide helpful and supportive feedback to authors. Authors are notified of the decision for publication as soon as possible. Those authors whose papers are not accepted will normally receive advice on redrafting or alternative forms of publication.

Copyright Policy

Copyrighted material allows the author to quote briefly (up to 100 words) for scholarly purposes from most published materials, providing the source is correctly cited within the manuscript. If the author wishes to use figures, tables, or longer quotations, written permission must be obtained from the writer or publisher to reprint the material. Under such circumstances, the author needs to provide a permission summary with their manuscript submission. Written permissions must also be provided by subjects in any photographs or audio or video segments. If the subjects are children, a signed release from a parent or guardian must be provided for each child visible in the photograph or video segment, or heard on an audio clip. In addition, although linking to another site does not require permission, replication (such as "screen shots") or description of a site within the manuscript requires permission to be sought from originator of web site, including those created by students, teachers, or schools.

  • The submission file is in a Microsoft Word file format (or similar).

  • Where available, DOIs for the references have been provided.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidlines.
  • If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions on Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.

Author Guidlines

Sending in your Submission:

To faciliate the anonymous peer review process, it is important that you must submit two different files, as follows:

(1) “Blank” manuscript: In this copy you must include the title followed by an abstract of about 100 words describing your submission (abstracts are published separately to help readers choose the articles they wish to read). The body of the work should not be less than 6,000 words nor exceed 8,000 words in length, excluding references. Nowhere in this text can the author(s) name(s) appear, or any details related to their identity (i.e., publications, names of colleagues, affiliated institutions, etc). Submissions are to adhere to the formatting guidelines of the American Psychological Association (7th Edition). They must also be sent in double-spaced, 12 pt font, with Times Roman (or similar) font.

(2) Authorship information: In this separate file, provide a brief autobiography of the author(s). You may include information such as: current position, professional affiliation, academic background, and areas of current research interest. Please include your mailing address and e-mail address. A photo of the author(s) may be included.
