This article takes a first look at Jules-Paul Tardivel’s ultramontane network at two points in its history: the years 1884-1886 and 1889-1891. This exploration was conducted from an analysis of letters exchanged between Tardivel and his colleagues and his personal diary. It shows an evolution in the constitution of the ultramontane network of the last quarter of the 19th century. The analysis also makes it possible to measure the network’s influence and support in the construction of La Vérité, the Tardivel-led ultramontane combat journal.

The Catholic sociology of Catholicism studies the place of Catholicism in societies through scientific approaches for a ministry-oriented purpose. This article seeks to tell the story and to analyze the fate of this disciplinary field in the French context, connecting the scientific outputs with the personal positions of the main protagonists. Impelled in the early 1930s by an academic, Gabriel Le Bras, the Catholic sociology of Catholicism took off after 1945, with the help of Church men, including Fernand Boulard. Its success, which is based on cooperation between the academic world and the ecclesial world, is nonetheless fragile. The author analyzes the reasons for its loss of legitimacy in the academic world (in the mid-1950s) and then in the Catholic world (in the mid-1960s), while questioning a possible posterity.

This text seeks to understand the weight of the circular letters of the Superiors General in the reception of the Second Vatican Council. The Council's interpretation through this type of intercession underlines the singularity of each female apostolic community, which has its own charism and spirituality. From the preparatory phase to the conciliar period, from the application of the Perfectae caritatis decree to the adoption of the new constitutions, the circular letters testify to the questions that the nuns faced during the period of adaptation, the spiritual reflections that accompanied them and also the particular solutions that they adopted.

This paper deals with the relative significance given to the religious founding figures of Montreal and of Nouvelle-France in general, as well as what sort of representations are proposed of these figures, in the teaching books of Quebec’s Ethics and Religious Culture Program in those chapters where religious heritage is addressed. We shall try to identify the essential qualities of the memory that is transmitted to today’s young generations of the religious project which was that of Quebec’s original settlers, in today’s profondly secularized Quebec society, as well as to what extent the deep motivations driving these founding figures can be understood today.

At the turn of the 21^st century, significant changes occured surrounding death in Quebec. Using the French historian Phillipe Ariès concepts of Tamed Death and Forbidden Death, this paper focuses on attitudes toward death in obituaries published in La Presse between 1975 and 2015. Both presence and absence of expressions related to the viewing of the corpse imply the emergence of Forbidden Death in Quebec.
