L’espace francophone dans l’oeuvre manitobaine de Gabrielle Roy Francophone Space in Gabrielle Roy's Manitoban Works

Résumé

La vie et l’oeuvre de Gabrielle Roy sont marquées par les rapports complexes entre un centre (soit-il métropolitain, urbain, anglophone, linguistique, culturel ou économique) et ses marges. Manitobaine de naissance, Roy quitta la province en 1937 pour s’établir finalement au Québec. Pourtant l’espace manitobain, ainsi que les groupes minoritaires qui l’habitent, jouent un rôle très important dans son oeuvre. Cet article propose une analyse de quatre des textes de Roy (Rue Deschambault, La route d’Altamont, Ces enfants de ma vie et De quoi t’ennuies-tu, Éveline?). Jusqu’à quel point l’espace manitobain représenté dans ces textes reflète-t-il les oppositions entre une communauté minoritaire et une communauté majoritaire? Dans quel sens l’expérience de la migration a-t-elle marqué la conceptualisation de l’espace qui ressort de l’oeuvre manitobaine de Roy? Ce seront là les questions que nous explorerons.

Abstract

Gabrielle Roy's life and work are marked by a complex relationship between a center (metropolitan, urban, anglophone, linguistic, cultural or economic) and its margins. Born in Manitoba, Roy leaves the province in 1937 to end up finally in the province of Québec. Manitoba and minorities continue however to live in Roy's writing. Our article proposes a study of four of her texts: Street of Riches, The Road Past Altamont, Children of My Heart and De quoi t’ennuies-tu, Éveline? To what extent is the Manitoban space that is presented in these novels representative of the oppositions between a minority and a majority (in terms of population) that inhabit the region? How has migration as a personal experience marked the conceptualization of space that emerges in the novels? These are the questions we will explore.
