This article sets out to analyze written stories of nursing students focusing on challenging situations from clinical practice The analysis involves looking at how the stories present various versions of being and becoming a nurse. On the one hand, this calls for an examination of what is found in the stories, narrative structures, linguistic devices, word choice and so on. On the other hand, it implies looking at what is not found by reflecting on notable absences from the stories. The analysis underscores that vulnerability is a prominent feature of these stories. The article stresses the importance of honouring the stories while at the same time advocating the use of narrative pedagogy to put the stories in a larger context and thus develop the student nurses’ narrative resources.

This article describes application of a psychological-narrative inquiry method to socio-cultural research. The Listening Guide method is used to identify patterns in life stories of Arab women leaders in Israel. The first study examines the stories of ten women leaders in Arab public schools. The second and third studies are part of research investigating female Arab managers working in educational and welfare systems in Israel. The Listening Guide method reveals the construction of the narrators’ personal, social and professional lives and how life stories are translated into reality-altering action in the narrators’ society.

The 2016 McKendy Lecture addressed the two grand narratives in the migration-crime-security nexus and critique their impact on our ability to see and not see real survivors and their stories of being trafficked. Focussing on the UK and female survivors, the lecture explored the crime master narrative for its construction of the social and cultural template—the official way of seeing the “right sort” of crime victim in trafficking (the VoT or modern slave). From this standpoint, anyone falling short of the template is susceptible to criminal scrutiny as someone culpable in her own exploitation. Similarly, the lecture examined the security narrative for its construction of the social and cultural template—the official way of seeing the “wrong sort” of migrant (undocumented, unskilled and racially different). Borne of political, social and cultural attitudes to UK immigration, the security narrative hides the reality of a migrant labour force without rights of citizenship or belonging. The lecture also shared stories of survivors of trafficking which illustrate how they are seen or not seen, but which survivors tell to promote their political visibility.
