The Miser Outwitted by Major John Richardson was advertised for sale in Upper Canadian newspapers in 1841 but no copy has been found. David Beasley, who wrote Richardson's biography, describes how he discovered the anonymous playscript in the Manuscripts Room of the British Library and determined by the handwriting that Richardson was the author. He surmises how it came to be produced at the Queens Theatre, Dublin on 10 May 1848. The play, a one-act farce, is a good example of the entertainment enjoyed by our colonial ancestors in the last century. The theme of a Miser tricked into losing his Money is of perennial interest and enjoys a long tradition in the theatre.

The Temperance Movement in the nineteenth century Maritime provinces encouraged both playwrights and actors to develop their talents by means of Temperance Soirées and Temperance-sponsored theatrical societies. The texts of two extant soirées from Halifax in the 1850s - John Sparrow Thompson's Cadets of Temperance: Entertainment for the Christmas Holidays and the anonymous Harvest Queen's Coronation - are examined, as are some of the amateur efforts of temperance-sponsored playwright John Louis Carleton of Saint John.

From the thirties to the fifties, in the Ottawa-Hull region, le Caveau was a popular theatre group that showed an extraordinary vitality. Expanding on the fringe of professional theatre groups from France and Montreal, this amateur group struggled to establish its rightful place in the world of theatre. In the end, the popular theatre group had to adopt aesthetic standards set forth by the visiting professional groups.

Carroll Aikins founded the Home Theatre in Naramata on Lake Okanagan in British Columbia in November 1920. Having just had his play The God of Gods produced at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre in England, Aikins, adhering to the 'Art Theatre' principles of Gordon Craig and Maurice Browne, began the Canadian Players, a training company intended to mount and tour indigenous drama on a national scale. Recruiting instructors from the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, he commenced work in his theatre building which was designed in collaboration with Lee Simonson of the Theatre Guild. The company produced a regular season of new works by such authors as Synge, Gilbert Murray, and Anatol France. When the venture closed, Aikins went on to direct for several seasons at Hart House Theatre in Toronto in the late 1920s. This paper includes a brief biography of Aikins, a survey of the Canadian Players, a discussion of Aikins' ideals, as well as a consideration of the practical problems and eventual closure. There is also a chronological listing of the plays produced by the Home Theatre.

The history of the Great Canadian Theatre Company of Ottawa is traced since its founding in 1975 by a group of students and teachers of Carleton University, Nationalist, leftist and populist in aim, the company was established by Bill Law (first Artistic Director), Greg Reid, Lois Shannon and Robin Matthews, whose play A Woman is Dying was their first inspiration. After a number of years without a base, the company built its own theatre in 1982. The article quotes extensively from the Members Handbook setting out the company's goals, the primary one being the presentation of Canadian plays by Canadian theatre practitioners. The theatre's political emphasis is compared with other theatre groups in the Ottawa area.
