This article discusses the two Grand Opera Houses in London, Ontario during the period 1881 to 1914 by surveying the development of four generations of theatre buildings beginning with the early garrison theatre. The second Opera House is London's current Grand Theatre. The relationship of civic pride and business interest in the theatre, encompassing the development of theatre as a business itself, is also considered.

>George Stewart, Jr. was a conservative theatre critic who published drama reviews over a forty-year period in later nineteenth-century Canada. He was typical of his time in preferring legitimate theatre and the plays of Shakespeare, Sheridan and Goldsmith, as well as in looking for naturalness in an actor or actress. Stewart was an early advocate of the need for critical autonomy, and was active in supporting French- as well as English-Canadian theatre.

This article is based on the observation of rehearsals for the 1987 Factory Theatre production of George F. Walker's Zastrozzi: The Master of Discipline, directed by Walker. Walker's casting choices and rehearsal techniques are examined to delineate his 'language of the stage' as a complement to the language of his script, and to determine his current interpretation of the play.

Black theatre in Canada has a presence dating back to 1849 and perhaps further. The profile of organizations and personalities detailed in this article shows the growth of this movement since the mid-nineteenth century, as well as problems and obstacles encountered by visible minorities in their struggle to enter the mainstream of Canadian cultural life.

The founding of the Civic Theatre Association in Toronto in 1945, and its four-season production history until 1949, provide a microcosm of the embryonic development stage of post-World War II indigenous Canadian theatre. Created through the merger of fourteen Toronto-area amateur companies under the leadership of the film and theatre critic Roly Young (1903-48), the CTA sought to finance adequate theatre facilities and to provide work opportunities and appreciative audiences for Canadian artists and playwrights. Young's opposition to the principle of government arts subsidies to create a Canadian 'national' theatre placed him in direct conflict with the organizational work of John Coulter and Herman Voaden at the Arts and Letters Club and the Canadian Arts Council.

John Juliani's company, Savage God, provided much alternative theatre in Vancouver, 1966- 72. This work was usually little publicized, for few performances and in small locations. To establish the significance of Savage God, a representative selection of documents is printed here, including Juliani's manifestos and explanations in interviews.
