Provincetown Playhouse manifests a complex thematic interplay of Sameness and Difference, which is rooted in the commonplace misrepresentation of male homosexual desire as a narcissistic formation unable to embrace Difference. Normand Chaurette makes use of this popular prejudice while moving beyond it. The drama not only critiques the inability of a homophobic society to accept alterity, but also critiques a gay identification with a masculinist ideology that perpetuates racism and sexism. Charles Charles's play, "The Sacrificial Slaying of Beauty," is a violent attempt at purging a male society of the feminine. In Charles's comic failure to suppress alterity during the performance of his play, Chaurette gives a model of the many unsuccessful attempts to eradicate Difference throughout Provincetown Playhouse.

En nous montrant l'échec comique de Charles d'y parvenir dans la représentation de sa pièce, Chaurette nous donne, tout au long de Provincetown Playhouse, un modèle de beaucoup d'autres vains efforts pour supprimer l'Altérité.

While critical reception of Cindy Cowan's A Woman from the Sea has typically valued its magical and fantasy elements, little critical attention has been given to its larger implications for ecofeminist spiritual revisioning. In what follows, the author considers Cowan's efforts to outline the liberating potential of ecofeminism and female spirituality. Drawing on textual evidence, the author examines how Cowan organizes a rediscovery of the sensual feminine through dramatic narrative.

Dans ce qui suit, l'auteure évalue les efforts de Cowan de définir le potentiel libérateur de l'ecoféminisme et d'un spiritualisme féminin. Se basant sur une étude du texte, l'auteure examine la façon que Cowan développe l'idée d'une redécouverte de la sensualité féminine par l'intermédiaire d'un récit dramatique.

This paper deals with a kind of discourse not often studied in the novel and even less frequently in theatre: the descriptive. A primary diagnosis of the descriptive in La Sagouine demonstrates a predilection for descriptions of the enumerative type. The article attempts to explain this preference and then goes on to analyse the internal functioning of these descriptions. Four patterns in the art of the story-teller are explored with emphasis given to enumeration of the heterogeneous type. All things considered, enumerative description in La Sagouine cannot be viewed as a mere discursive filler. On the contrary, we must acknowledge its narrative function. Moreover, it provides the spectator with a profile of the descriptor, often overshadowed by the profile of the narrator.

Cet article s'intéresse à un type de discours peu souvent étudié dans le roman et encore moins au théâtre: le descriptif. Un premier diagnostic du descriptif dans La Sagouine montre une prédilection pour les description à caractère énumératif. L'article s'efforce d'expliquer cette préférence, puis s'emploie à analyser le fonctionnement interne des descriptions énumératives, dégageant quatre tendances dans l'art de la conteuse dont une fera l'objet d'un plus long examen -- l'énumération de type hétérogène. Tout compte fait, la description énumérative dans La Sagouine ne peut être considérée comme une opération de remplissage. Il faut, au contraire, lui reconnaître une fonction narrative. Qui est plus, elle fournit au spectateur un portrait de la descriptrice, souvent éclipsé par celui de la narratrice.

Performance has made the visual arts an inspirational source for the scenic arts. As fragmented artwork, performance allows the artist to become the centre of his or her exhibition, the very subject of his or her own work. The artist orchestrates the entire project by organizing the various components, visual, physical, auditory, text, and so forth, in the performance space.

Although fascinating by its fleeting, ephemeral, and even spontaneous appearance, performance was somewhat shunned by many artists who, in the mid eighties, reverted to a more concrete art form (painting, sculpture, photography, etc.). At this particular time, the popularity of installation pieces soared considerably in both the Québec and Canadian art scenes. The question no longer revolved around displaying one singular work, whether alone or as a part of a series, but rather to establish, in a given space, a relationship between various elements which constitute a whole.

Installation draws upon numerous artistic styles, whether painting, or sculpture, or photography, or others. In fact, installation is, above all, the hybrid art form. Inasmuch as performance nourishes the scenic arts, installation, specifically video installation, calls upon the theatre for a staging, within and through which the spectator moves in order to grasp its meaning.

This paper connects video installation with three ideas. The first, collage, operates through add-ons, touch-ups, or even transparencies such as television images. The next, assembly, promotes the relationship between the various, composite, physical elements. Finally, bricolage, or tinkering, reconfigures the installation according to the path taken by the spectator in the space. We shall illustrate these concepts with a presentation of one of our productions as well as that of another Montreal artist.

Les arts visuels ont été source d'inspiration pour les arts de la scène en particulier à cause de la performance. Oeuvre éclatée, la performance laisse place à l'artiste qui devient le centre de sa production, l'objet même de son travail. Ce dernier, agissant en général comme maître d'oeuvre, organise les divers éléments visuels, matériels, sonores, textuels, etc., dans l'espace de représentation.

Bien que fascinante par son aspect fugace et éphémère, voire événementiel, la performance a été quelque peu mise à l'écart par plusieurs artistes qui sont revenus, vers le milieu des années '80, à un art d'objets (peinture, sculpture, photo, etc.). À cette même époque, l'installation a pris un essor considérable dans la pratique artistique québécoise et canadienne. Il ne s'agissait plus de présenter une seule oeuvre isolée ou présentée en série, mais plutôt de mettre en relation, dans un espace donné, divers éléments qui formaient un tout.

L'installation fait appel à différents genres, qu'il s'agisse de la peinture, de la sculpture, de la photographie, etc. En fait, l'installation est l'art de l'hybride par excellence. Autant la performance a nourri les arts de la scène autant l'installation, qui plus est, l'installation-vidéo, fait appel au théâtre, et plus précisément à une mise en scène, par le dispositif à l'intérieur duquel le spectateur doit circuler pour en saisir le sens.

Dans notre exposé, nous présenterons l'installation-vidéo en lien avec trois notions: le collage, fonctionnant par ajouts ou par petites touches, voire par transparence (les images télé). L'assemblage, la deuxième notion, opère dans la mise en relation des divers éléments matériels qui composent l'installation. Enfin, le bricolage ou la reconstruction de l'installation, se fait par le parcours du spectateur dans l'espace. Pour illustrer notre propos, nous présenterons l'une de nos productions ainsi que celle d'une autre artiste montréalaise.

The Jupiter Theatre (1951-54) was founded by actors Lorne Greene and John Drainie, and writer Len Peterson, who sought to establish a fully professional company in Toronto dedicated to the encouragement of Canadian playwrights, and the "emergence of a truly Canadian voice in the theatre." Their ideals were shared by the nationalist local radio critic Nathan Cohen. Of the fifteen plays produced during Jupiter's brief but significant lifetime four were Canadian-written: Socrates and The Blood Is Strong by Lister Sinclair, The Money Makers by Ted Allan and Blue Is for Mourning by Nathan Cohen. I will attempt to assess Jupiter's contribution to the development of that "Canadian voice" by looking at the plays themselves, their authors and, as far as can be deduced, their theatrical presentation by Jupiter. I shall measure my own response to the plays as texts against the responses of the contemporary Toronto critics, principally Herbert Whittaker of the Globe and Mail and Nathan Cohen on CJBC Views the Shows, a perusal of whose reviews formed the bulk of my investigation. Conversations with Jupiter alumni have helped to place these responses in a meaningful historic context. I shall also consider the subsequent contributions, if any, of the three playwrights to the Canadian theatre.

Des quinze pièces montées pendant l'histoire courte mais significative du Jupiter, quatre pièces étaient écrites par des Canadiens: Socrates et The Blood Is Strong de Lister Sinclair, The Money Makers de Ted Allan et Blue Is for Mourning de Nathan Cohen. J'analyserai la contribution du Jupiter à la création de cette « voix canadienne» par un examen des textes énumérés, leurs dramaturges et, dans la mesure du possible, les productions. Je comparerai mes impressions de ces textes avec celles des critiques torontois de l'époque, plus spécifiquement Herbert Whittaker du Globe and Mail et Nathan Cohen de CJBC Views the Shows dont les écrits composent la partie la plus importante de mon corpus. Des entrevues avec des anciens membres de Jupiter ont aussi aidé à placer mes impressions dans un contexte historique valable. J'évaluerai ensuite les contributions subséquentes, s'il y en a eu, de ces trois dramaturges au théâtre canadien (de langue anglaise).

In 1975, two Acadians, Calixte Duguay and Jules Boudreau, in order to commemorate the centenary of the Revolt of Caraquet, presented Louis Mailloux, an historical drama which was received with much acclaim and which was to return regularly to the stage. As with all historical fiction, this play implicitly proposes an interpretation of the gaps inherent in the recounting of events of history. The author of this paper does, however, point out therein an essential intertextuality with other nineteenth-century French-Canadian texts contemporaneous with the action of the play. In analyzing these texts, he elaborates a theory which permits him to determine how their structure allowed the Acadian playwrights to impose an original historical philosophy on their theatrical work. Contrary to what the title may suggest, this philosophy has less to do with the simple creation of a national hero than with the concept of a collective one.

Profitant du centenaire de la Révolte de Caraquet, les Acadiens Calixte Duguay et Jules Boudreau présentaient, en 1975, Louis Mailloux, drame historique qui obtiendrait un grand succès, et qui serait ensuite fréquemment repris à travers toute l'Acadie. Comme toute fiction historique, cette pièce propose implicitement une interprétation aux lacunes inhérentes à l'Histoire événementielle. Dans cet article, l'auteur y note toutefois une essentielle intertextualité avec d'autres textes canadiens-français du dix-neuvième siècle, contemporains de l'action de la pièce. Par l'analyse de ces textes, il élabore une théorie qui lui permet de déterminer comment la structure particulière de ces écrits avait permis aux auteurs acadiens d'imposer à leur oeuvre théâtrale une philosophie historique originale qui, contrairement à ce que le titre pouvait le laisser suggérer, s'éloignait de la notion de héros national pour se rapprocher plutôt du concept de héros collectif.
