This essay is a study of Sharon Pollock's artist characters. Using concepts drawn from contemporary autobiography theory with Butler's theory of performativity, I examine three plays in detail—Blood Relations, Saucy Jack, and Moving Pictures—to show how Pollock develops an artist's power to produce identity, to articulate the meaning of a life in performance, and, in some instances, to resist those scriptings of life which limit or erase individuals. While I conclude with observations about these three plays, I also suggest that the paradigm Pollock explores through the artist character informs other of her plays and non-artist characters.

Sharon Pollock has frequently constructed theatrical environments that interrogate the interpenetration of past and present. The lives of her characters are staged on several levels of time. In the productions of Doc at the Studio Theatre, Edmonton, in November 1999, Moving Pictures at Theatre Junction, Calgary, in March 1999, and End Dream at Theatre Junction in March 2000, the stage design demonstrated this fluidity of time, but also the distinct moments that embed themselves in the memory. In Pollock's plays, linearity is disrupted through spacial structures and resonant sounds.

Sharon Pollock's Doc is a watershed play not only because it is her most intensely personal work to date, but also because the protagonist-daughter confronts her ambivalence on yet another front: the relationship to the maternal. After the play ends with what seems a tidy resolution, the ghost of Bob, the mother, lives on to inhabit the character of subsequent mothers: Eme in Getting it Straight and Joan in Fair Liberty's Call. The treacherous stepmother in Blood Relations and the complicit adoptive mother, Mama George, in Whiskey Six Cadenza, are supplanted by more complicated and more sympathetic maternal figures. In Doc, Pollock bravely raises ghosts from her own past. Once summoned, they bring with them new challenges.

This essay examines how in Doc and Fair Liberty's Call Sharon Pollock metaphorically places the father figure on trial for social injustice a gainst his family. In these two New Brunswick plays Pollock makes use of the memory play structure to revisit the social crimes of Ev Chalmers and George Roberts. The memory structure allows multiple characters to revisit the family wrongdoings in their attempt to understand, defend, justify, and/or accept their past actions.

Quebec theatre has frequently been a site for dramatizing trauma–whether we mean the collective historical trauma of the Conquest or the more personal traumas related to dysfunctional families or violent acts. In a group of recent plays by Lebanese immigrant playwrights we see a different kind of trauma being staged–the overwhelming historical trauma of the Lebanese civil war as performed in plays by Abla Farhoud, Bernard Antoun, and Wajdi Mouawad. This different kind of "théâtre engagé" bears witness to the national tragedy of Lebanon, works through the trauma it caused, and offers hope to the survivors. Instead of inspiring dread, fear, horror, and pity leading to catharsis, these plays re-enact violence, memorialize the victims, and perform mourning work in order to renew our shattered faith in humanity.

Le théâtre québécois a souvent été un site pour la mise en scène des événements traumatisants-qu'on parle du traumatisme collectif et historique de la Conquête ou des traumatismes intimes liés aux familles dysfonctionnelles ou aux actes violents. Dans des pièces récentes écrites par des dramaturges d'origine libanaise on voit une différente sorte de traumatisme mise en scène-la catastrophe historique de la guerre civile du Liban comme elle est représentée dans les pièces d'Abla Farhoud, Bernard Antoun, et Wajdi Mouawad. This paper traces the history of dramatic copyright and performance right in Canada prior to the Canadian Copyright Act of 1924. It will also show how the movement towards an international copyright agreement among England, France, and the United States impacted on the theatre in Canada and led to the widespread pirating of English, French, Belgian, and American plays by producers in Canada.
