The alternative theatre movement in Victoria tends to be associated with the tenure of Don Shipley at the Belfry Theatre (1975-80), but it was arguably by Liz Gorrie and the Kaleidoscope Theatre Company, a Theatre for Young Audiences, that the alternative theatre movement was first brought to the provincial capital. Starting in 1974 and during its first two decades under Gorrie’s artistic directorship, Kaleidoscope was as politically and aesthetically radical in its objectives and practices as such better-known 1970s companies as Tarragon, Tamahnous, Passe Muraille, and Toronto Free Theatre. Kaleidoscope not only created work that bears comparison with that of contemporary alternative theatre for adults, but thanks to the purity of Liz Gorrie’s theatrical vision, and her deep respect for young audiences, it developed a style of TYA that “changed the face of children’s theatre in Canada and around the world” (McLauchlin “Interview”). Recognizing Kaleidoscope’s contribution to the alternative theatre movement in this country will require a look at the many ways in which the company earned its alternative credentials—even while addressing audiences made up of children. Jennifer Wise and Lauren Jerke look first at the company’s genesis as a progressive alternative to the city’s mainstream regional theatre, then consider its indigenous and collectively created material, its Grotowskian and Brechtian objectives, its anti-illusionistic Asian aesthetic, and its use of masks, puppets, transformation, and abstraction. As Wise and Jerke show, Kaleidoscope in the 1970s and 1980s utilized a virtual encyclopedia of alternative theatre techniques, earning a national and international reputation within five years of its founding and, the authors argue, meriting a permanent place in the history of the alternative theatre movement in Canada.

The Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival was founded in 1981 on the premise that a non-adjudicated, first-come first-served structure combined with bare minimum administrative and financial backing could offer artists and companies a degree of creative freedom not previously seen in Canada. This first festival sold about 7,500 tickets to its forty-five different productions (Brown 88). In 2011, the Edmonton Fringe celebrated its thirtieth anniversary; this iteration of the festival sold 104,142 tickets to its 140 indoor shows (Nicholls, “Fringe Director Exits”). Brian Batchelor examines and traces the first thirty years of the Edmonton International Fringe Theatre Festival through the concept of branding. In particular, he considers how the Edmonton Fringe differentiates itself from other forms of Edmontonian and Canadian theatre; how the Fringe functions as a festival within Edmonton’s arts ecology and urban imaginaries to influence the city’s civic brand, and to attract funding and sponsorships; and how artists within the festival brand themselves and their theatrical products. Batchelor then locates and describes the festival’s beer tents as spaces that illustrate how the Fringe itself has become a theatre ecology colonized by globalized capitalism, producing a creative and economic model that ultimately promotes not just a safer, commercial(ized), and non-innovative theatrical aesthetic but also in fact affirms a neoliberal, entrepreneurial form of theatre practice.

Dans un deuxième temps, Batchelor situe et décrit les tentes où l’on vend de la bière au festival, des espaces qui illustrent comment le Fringe est lui-même devenu une écologie théâtrale colonisée par le capitalisme mondial, ayant produit un modèle créatif et économique qui, en fin de compte, promeut une esthétique théâtrale plus sûre, plus commercial(isé)e et moins novatrice qui, en outre, appuie une pratique théâtrale néolibérale et entrepreneuriale.

In this article, Doonan analyzes two performances presented by the SensoriuM, a collaborative participatory art platform in Montreal, Quebec. In doing so, she shows how the SensoriuM makes public through curatorial and dramaturgical practice. By making public, she refers to the active translation of materiality into representational forms, and also to the assembling of humans and non-humans in participatory performance. Doonan describes the concrete audiences bounded by the live events, as well as the more amorphous and immeasurable publics that are brought into being through the circulation of texts, including digital images, videos, and oral presentations. Drawing from science and technology studies and more-than-human geographies, she explores “epistemic publics,” or the animal, organic and machinic configurations that come into being in the process of creating (objects of) knowledge. Doonan analyzes two specific performances: Midsummer Mile End Foraging Tour and Hunter, Gatherer, Purveyor to show how these processes of making public are enacted. Both performances use food as a medium to complicate and undo binaries of public/private, self/other, domestic/wild, depressed/revitalized. The meanings and uses of particular places are brought into question through embodied and symbolic means. Doonan argues that these performances work to de-design the city by queering its dominant discourses and creating intimate spaces of exchange.

Djanet Sears’s play The Adventures of a Black Girl in Search of God offers a generous opportunity for the careful contemplation of the intersections between Christianity, motherhood, and blackness in Canada—a topic hitherto unexamined in scholarship about Sears’s plays. The protagonist’s search for God is a personal exploration of self in relation to each of these topics; similarly, Naila Keleta-Mae draws from the analysis of self through the article’s incorporation of methodologies employed in autobiographical performance and autoethnographic research. Specifically, the author maps her examination of Sears’s play through her own body and experiences of Christianity, motherhood, and blackness in Canada. One of the key ways that this article seeks to differ itself from traditional Canadian scholarship is by foregrounding the explicit ways the scholar’s topic of inquiry intersects with her/his/their personal lived experience. To some extent, this article is about visibility and transparency—it is an effort to make equally visible the preoccupations of the scholar in her/his/their analysis of a subject matter—in this specific case it is the unambiguous articulation of why Keleta-Mae cares about Sears’s play.

Though trauma transgresses borders and produces displacements, too often its study and the treatment of its harmful affects contain it historically, geographically, and institutionally. In the process, trauma becomes dislocated from the larger affective economies through which it is produced. Following the lead of feminist and queer studies scholars, Ann Cvetkovich and Sara Ahmed, Helene brings together two performances—Diamanda Galás’s Defixiones, Will and Testament: Orders from the Dead , and Amanda Todd’s My Story: Struggling, bullying, suicide and self harm —to illuminate sticky connections across the geopolitical particularities of violently produced trauma. She proposes that Galás’s and Todd’s performances of two radically disparate traumas—genocide and sexual assault—need to be understood as contemporary variations of traditional laments that use embodied affective expression to communicate the overwhelming and “inarticulate grief” associated with the trauma of loss and violation (Holst-Warhaft Cue 4). With this essay, Vosters aspires not only to bring Galás and Todd into dialogue, but also to join with them as part of an interdisciplinary and polyphonic chorus of lament against the forgetfulness of trauma’s production.

In the last fifteen years, various projects and publications in the interconnected areas of theatre studies, theatrical pedagogy, and literary criticism have highlighted associations between theatrical creativity and constructions of age and aging. Despite a thriving “theatrical gerontology,” the work of contemporary dramatists, especially those outside European and American canons, remains scarcely analyzed. Núria Casado Gual looks at the dramatic work of Joanna McClelland Glass, a Canadian writer born in 1936 in Saskatoon, and who currently lives in Florida. Despite the recognition that McClelland Glass has received in North American academic and theatrical circles, her plays written between 1984 and the present remain unexamined and a more complete study of her playwriting career is yet to be developed. Through the double lens of cultural gerontology and dramatic criticism, Casado Gual offers an overview of McClelland Glass’s theatricalization of old age, based on the main characters and secondary figures that can be associated with this stage of the life course in her work. The composite characterization of McClelland Glass’s older figures ensures not only the complexity of the author’s portrayal of aging-intoold-age, but also its verisimilitude and, therefore, its meaningfulness. McClelland Glass combines notions of progress and decline in the dramatic depiction of her aged characters, generating an ambivalent narrative of aging that re-presents this essential human experience in a truthful and dignified way. Ultimately, McClelland Glass’s recreation of old age is shown to contain the main defining traits of her theatre, as well as the insights that it offers on the complexities and mysteries of the human life course.
