Colleges in old Montréal have been working for the integration of students with disabilities since 1982. Special accommodations allow students to overcome limitations so that they can succeed in their studies. Accommodations in the classroom are specified and teachers have, for example, developed the habit of offering their course in the presence of an interpreter for deaf and hard of hearing students, allow more time for evaluations or allow students to use technology to compensate certain disorders. Over the last ten years students with different needs have arrived at the colleges and accommodations have been modified accordingly. This necessitates modifications to teaching methods, in terms of classroom management or in response to disruptive or unacceptable behavior from students diagnosed with learning disabilities or mental health problems. Several teachers have expressed concern on this regard. The college has attempted to respond to their needs by assigning a teacher to support his/her colleagues. "A teacher who listens and talks to teachers." Although it is complementary to professional intervention by Student Integration Support Services, the teacher must first be known by his peers and develop a trust that will allow him/her to hear the "real" problems experienced by teachers. This workshop will present the model of intervention, the contact person’s mandate and to focus after two test sessions. One can also ask whether this model is transferable to other educational environments.

This paper analyses the interaction between the community of persons with disabilities and the US Congress from 1970 to 2008. How did this interaction evolve during this period? Which kind of strategies did the disability community engage in? Which factors influenced members of Congress to respond to this social movement? A first of indication of this evolution is the “professionalization” of advocacy and lobbying strategies used by the community of persons with disabilities: national organisations established their headquarters in Washington, so that they had used both direct and indirect lobbying strategies (meeting, letters, call to action, legislative seminar, etc.) to push Congress to pass legislation on disability rights. Congress had to answer to it. Some senators and representatives used their experiences living with disabilities to become legislative entrepreneurs in this field. They became a catalyst for change within Congress. Congress had to act – invitations to participate to public hearing of congressional committee on disability rights bills were an early measure of change. But, contrary to general knowledge, on participation of citizen groups at congressional committees, participation of individuals has been higher than that of formal organisations.

The participation of persons who are in a situation of disability and able-bodied persons in the same collective sporting activity is not a simple question. This article discusses reasons leading to the development of shared practices, in particular during a game with disabled and able-bodied persons, and obstacles hindering the success of this sharing. It also studies collective sports activities that deviate from the dominant uniformity of sports rules and logic with the aim of creating more equitable conditions of sports practice. Three examples of these sports activities distinguished by their degree of codification and institutionalization are examined. Their architecture, development as well as elements of success of an innovation are presented. The question arises as to the relevance and limits of these innovative practices.

This article presents the results of a qualitative study aiming to identify and describe the social and health consequences of the inaccessibility of services and financial compensations for people with disabilities and their close relations. Fifty-two people were individually interviewed. Content analysis of the interviews reveals that inaccessibility leads to negative consequences on physical health, mental health and social participation. The analysis also revealed how people deal with inadequacies in social protection. These results are discussed in light of recent transformations in Quebec's compensation practices.

SummaryDeficiency and handicap are two facets of the same reality. The author defines handicap conventionally as the collection of social roles prevented an individual because of a deficiency. A handicap may be reduced by the individual himself aspiring to diminish his deficiency, and/or by procedures carried out by society. Taking the example of the deaf, the author demonstrates how an action concentrated upon the deficiency can have the consequence of increasing the handicap, and in so doing reveals itself a synonym of intolerance.

A consideration of audio-books implies two types of reader-figures : the reader-performer and the reader-listener. This article seeks to stimulate reflection on the role of each of these two agents in the reception of recorded text. Reader-listeners find themselves in a unique reader-reception situation, that of listening and of doing so without the support of the written text. Their rapport with the text and their rapport with the voice of the reader-performer are developed simultaneously. That being the case, the audio-book implies envisioning the book in accordance with the way the voice of the reader-performer is received. A case study, that of Christine Angot's L'inceste, aids in exposing interpretative difficulties that can occur when moving from a written text to an audio format.
