This research aims to approach the strategies of entry and exit of an economic sector by observing the theoretical and practical trajectories followed by the various groups composing the craft industry. After modelling the sector of trades and its populations, it is a question of proposing an exploratory step in order to understand the trajectories of the craftsmen and thus their behaviour. From this qualitative methodological point of view, we interviewed a corpus of 24 craft companies. The analysis of data reveals an empirical validation of our conceptual framework in the form of a typology, of which each “ideal-type” (traditional craftsman of succession, traditional craftsman of social advancement, installation craftsman in entrepreneurial logic and installation craftsman in logic of social integration) put forward the history of their trajectory such as they tell it, an interpretation and a modelling of their career passed, present and future. The professional trajectories illustrate the strategies of the craftsmen perfectly. It appears in particular a pre-eminence of the reactive strategies during the creation or of the buyout of the company, crucial phase for a change of sector or statute.

With almost 1,5 million companies, craft industry is one of the pillars of the French economy. Among craftspeople, two categories of companies coexist: the traditional one, which represents most of the craft industry, and the entrepreneurial one, which represents a few percent of craft companies. To date, no synthesis of the management literature on craftsmanship has been carried out, and it seems important to take stock of what is known about these enterprises. We propose in this article a review of the literature on the French craft industry. Observation is quite astonishing: management research focuses on entrepreneurial businesses, which are a minority, while very little research has been conducted on traditional ones. We identify, in the literature, the elements that can drive the manager to take a more entrepreneurial path. We conclude this article with recommendations for future research, particularly on the identity of craftspeople that should be deeper investigated, and about the management difficulties of traditional craftspeople, which researchers mention, without ever having explained them.

Our article analyzes the evolution of Fez's handicraft sector, the challenges it has faced for many decades and the conditions needed to revitalize it. Clearly, to recover its former strength and influence, the traditional crafts sector in Fez needs to embrace innovation as the most effective way to enhance value, while also finding new ways to organize craft production. Is the transfer policy that moves existing craftshops from the old city to newly created «areas of craft activities» outside the medina the most appropriate way to achieve this revitalization? In other words, does the craftshops relocation policy create conditions whereby craftspeople can adopt more efficient and more competitive work practices? This is the key issue addressed in this article.

Following our previous article on crafts, we shall now concentrate on ethnodesign, a fairly recent description of proximity design that seeks to reconcile the mission of architects, designers and craftsmen in their quest for beauty within the useful but embedded in society and history. As an alliance between tradition and contemporaneity, the emotions aroused by identity recognition and sustainable development appear as three pillars of an idea created in the daily life of a given culture. Ethnodesign and related concepts seek to translate sociocultural and economic values in the search for beauty and the expression of a vision of contemporary design inspired by tradition.

From the paradox according to which the crafts, “first company of France”, constitute an important object of observation relatively badly known and little investigated, this article suggests becoming attached to the nature of each of the companies which compose this institutional group. The purpose is then to contribute to a better comprehensibility of the craft TPE, as shape of specific organization, notably in terms of functioning and piloting.By taking support, for the case of the craft TPE, on the transposition of the identity approach, initially dedicated in big organization, an abstract representation of the identity's system of the craft company is proposed under the shape of a particular identity system. This representation is then validated by an empirical study realized with a sample of 346 craftsmen. The results notably lead to accentuate two rival identity's configurations : that of the craftsman and that of the entrepreneur.

For the hundredth anniversary of the Cercles de Fermières, this paper examines how knowledge and skills have played a part in building their reputation to this day, markedly with regards to textile arts. It passes in review different magazines published during the Association's history and examines the content and training obtained in craft industry through various activities. This paper also emphasizes the role played by some women who were particularly committed to the Association. This article brings forth the Fermières' contribution to popular education, which was, and still is, based on sharing and exchanging, all the while longing for progress and modernity.
