Ethnological and ethnolinguistic research can pose a wide range of different ethical challenges for researchers and the communities in which they work. Ethnologists and ethnolinguists study human societies from different angles to understand their cultural traits, linguistic variability, etc. Such research can advance our understanding of social groups and contribute to the production of knowledge and may even benefit certain communities. But it can also create risks for participants and communities (e.g., loss of privacy, stigmatization, persecution), and for researchers themselves (e.g., loss of access to a field area, loss of control over the research process and results). These risks and other ethical challenges, and the means to address them, deserve special attention from ethnologists and ethnolinguistics.

Audiovisual documentation professionals have been actively involved in audiovisual creations based on archives, from news programs to talk shows, since the beginnings of public television in Europe. From 1952 to this day, audiovisual documentalists in the French public audiovisual sector, particularly within the framework of the Institut National de l'Audiovisuel (INA) since 1974, have constantly sought to share knowledge about the audiovisual content and media that have marked the history of the French media in the second half of the 20th century. For a long time, professionals have been building their know-how, their tools and their working methodologies autonomously, away from any institutional will, in order to bring audiovisual archives out of the shadows. This article, which is part of a PhD in Information-Communication on the history of the profession of audiovisual archivist, will therefore question the evolution of the role of these professionals in bringing archives to ever more diverse audiences.Documentalists, as essential interlocutors for the various users of archives, must in fact place their work practices and methodologies within the framework of collective productions, and in the context of the increasingly commercial value of audiovisual sources.

Two imaginaries often inspire fictions of the future : the ecological catastrophe and the development of (bio)technologies. Epidemic reality arises precisely at the crossroads of these two dimensions, allowing the exploration of a future that is sometimes utopian and sometimes dystopian. The twenty-first century novels examined in this article focus on four of these possible African futures : White Devils (2004) by the British author Paul McAuley, Moxyland (2008) by South African SF-writer Lauren Beukes, Fever (2016) by her compatriot Deon Meyer and The Old Drift (2019) by the Zambian Namwali Serpell.
