For more than 20 years, GRIS-Montréal (Groupe de recherche et d'intervention sociale) has been dedicated to demystifying homosexuality and bisexuality through workshops in schools of Montreal and surrounding areas. Its 20th anniversary is a good opportunity to proceed to a critical assessment of its activities. Three challenges are discussed in this article: the impact of religious discourse on workshops' reception, the importance of deconstructing gender roles in the fight against homophobia, lesbophobia and biphobia, and the taboo surrounding discourses on sexuality.

AbstractAcross the African continent there is an increasingly visible and audible LGBTI community, claiming social space and demanding legitimacy, in a context which is demonstrably repressive of homosexuality; homosexuality in Africa is no longer willing to stay hidden. In this new socio-sexual movement one can find socio-anthropologic meanings. The work presented is an analytical first draft exposing relations between the nascent collectives' transnational mobilizations and contextual forces which prohibit homosexuality. The objective is to expose the framework in which the process of “visibilisation” of homosexuality takes place through new forms of community mobilization. One of our hypothesis is that the hostility of the social environment may contribute positively to feed and to strengthen those nascent mobilizations.

In a context where the authority of the bible is increasingly being questioned, it is no longer sufficient to simply look for the primary or literal meaning of the text. Though important, this exegetical task needs to lead into hermeneutics — a dialogue with today's various contexts. In this third of a series of four articles on “Homosexuality and the Word of God”, the author turns to Romans 1:26-27, the only Second Testament passage that appears to deal explicitly with the question of homosexuality. Following the same procedure used in the two previous articles, this study first deals with exegetical issues relative to the passage of Romans, before moving to hermeneutical reflections raised in today's context.

AbstractThis research aims at understanding the high suicidal risk of the young lesbians and gays. For that purpose, we evaluated potentials connections between their suicidal risk and the important stress they felt during the coming out. Semi-directive interviews were realized with 15 young people considering thremselves lesbians or gays. Within our sample, three young people had made a suicide attempt, among which two in connection with their coming out. Our results demonstrate that this disclosure may generate important distress and lead some young people trying to take off their life, essentially when it rises negative attitudes. But it can also cause well-being and relief, primarily when it leads the young person to benefit a more important support.

The current situation of men who have sex with men in Bamako, as in other African cities, presents strong similarities with that of homosexuals in the West during the decades that preceded the so-called “liberation” movement. Among Western observers, these similarities often promote the idea that the situation of these African men could have a fate similar to that of homosexuals in the West, implicitly positioned at the summit of a hierarchy of socio-sexual development, resulting thus in the adoption of an evolutionary reading. This article questions the effects of globalization on the evolution of the social forms of homosexuality in Sub-Saharan Africa. It strives to overcome the pitfall both of evolutionary conceptions and readings in terms of homogenization of sexual cultures.

In Quebec, 144 gay periodicals have been founded since 1971, all types taken together. What are the changes that have affected the gay press and how has the gay press adapted to the needs of the gay community? This article analyses the transformations related to the conditions for production and diffusion, but also to the materiality and the content of gay periodicals in the province. More precisely, it focuses on three periodicals: Le Tiers (1971-1972), Gai(e)s du Québec (1977-1979) and RG (1984-2012). Through an analysis of summaries and editorials from these periodicals, this article sheds light on the links that these publications have with the history of the gay community.
