As a tribute to the thinking of Jean-Claude Gillet, this article aims to make accessible in the English language some of the notions of sociocultural community development and its function developed by this author in relation to their testing during a recent training course on the theme of Social action in times of crises: sociocultural community development as a lever of social change in the Middle East and North Africa region. Based on the knowledge of the participants and faculty members, this paper proposes a broad reflection on sociocultural community development as it is currently experienced and desired in various countries (Yemen, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine). This reflection, co-constructed from contexts experienced by the participants and selected contributions in reference to inspiring authors such as Gillet, seems necessary today for the potential development of intervention and investigation tools supporting social change in the English-speaking Arab countries.

The participation to cultural projects seems to offer numerous profits, but it is not defined always clearly. Recognizing that the arts are not neutrals from a social point of view, our search took into account the specificities of the artistic creation, to study pupils’ participation of the primary sector to a project of creation with artists, in particular these effects on the pupils, the artists and the teachers. Of ethnographical type, this research exploited the analysis of semi-directive interviews with pupils, artist and teacher and observations realized during the various stages of the project of creation with the pupils. The interpretation of its results questions how the participation in artistic activities can activate a project of emancipation by a sharing of the sensitive by developing author’s posture.

This exploratory study exposes the various positive aspects resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic confinement in Quebec. Approximately thirty informal interviews were conducted to study these perceptions. Individuals observed positive changes regarding their consumption, eating behavior, time, mobility, equilibrium, community ties, resilience capacity and digital literacy. However, time passes and these positive aspects could wear off if not activated or preserved. If this is the case, we may no longer rely on them to transform society towards benevolent management and the development of the learning capacities of the people in organizations. Despite rapid and financial intervention by governments, there does not seem to be any concomitant mechanism implemented to bring about transformations (e.g. adaptation of catering services, training for the unemployed, etc.). We thus wish to highlight the positive aspects of confinement, to encourage people in society to mobilize in order to become more resilient and innovative in their practices contributing to the development of the “new normality”, or else face new waves or crises.

ABSTRACTThis paper is based on a comparison of self-reported delinquency and police recorded contacts for a sample of adult drug-addicts. The average age of the sample (N=491 of which 135 are females) is thirty-one. The members of the sample were heavily involved in delinquency before entering a heroin prescription program in Swit- zerland. Different concepts of validity are tested, namely content validity (including face validity and logical validity) and concurrent validity (including known-group validity and correlational validity). The results show that the risk of having a police contact is explained better by the variety and the seriousness of the offences than by the number of offences. They also show that the self-report method can produce valid results in this particular context. Moreover, self-reports seem to measure the amount and patterns of delinquent behavior more accurately than official data.

Social work theory has had an inconsistent record in regard to adequately addressing the “environment” in all of its aspects. In the past, social work theory has focused overwhelmingly on the social environment of those whom the profession serves, and has ignored or minimized aspects of clients' physical and natural environment. In recent decades, however, social work has more adequately theorized the importance of all aspects of environment. The “idealist” and the “structural” approaches to connecting social work and the environment have brought us closer to adequately theorizing the relationship between environmental sustainability and social justice. Social work's theoretical perspectives on the environment can now extend their scope and usefulness if they draw insights from political economy, and deploy a range of public policy ideas to shape improved social programs and new tax and transfer mechanisms. In these ways, the discipline and profession of social work can make substantial contributions to attaining the linked goals of environmental sustainability and social justice.
