The Théâtre du Jorat was founded in 1908 by the playwright René Morax, in Mézières, a small village in the Swiss countryside. Influenced by Romain Rolland and Maurice Pottecher's populist theatrical enterprises, Morax created a people's theatre that the local inhabitants could not only identify with but also be involved with by actively participating in the various theatrical projects he produced. Morax's interest in music and his homeland's choral tradition led him to incorporate music into his theatrical concept. The Niobec concentrator recovers niobium minerals (principally pyrochlore) from carbonate and silicate gangue. In the process some 15% of the Nb is rejected in a slimes ($-$10 $ mu$m) product. Recovery of pyrochlore from the slimes was studied. The study was performed using plant water which contained about 200 ppm Ca, 100 ppm Mg and variable quantities of organics as the main contaminants. Selective pyrochlore collectors and selective silicate depressants were evaluated. Four possible routes to float pyrochlore selectively were found. All routes required prior carbonate flotation. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of cased-based learning, writing and peer discussions on learning about digestive diseases in a computer-based learning environment, BioWorld. This method was called the Grand Rounds method. Thirty-one, ninth grade biology students participated in the study. Two classes were randomly selected as the Rounds group and the No Rounds group. All students worked collaboratively in pairs to solve diagnostic problems on BioWorld. The Rounds group then engaged in the Grand Rounds activities while the No Rounds group conducted a web search and solved a final BioWorld problem. This thesis presents the experimental modelling of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids transport in partially saturated with water sand using centrifuge tests, which were carried out at the Geotechnical Centrifuge facility located at Delft Technical University (The Netherlands). The experimentation consisted of a two-dimensional three-phase flow (air, water, Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids) in an unsaturated sand for two values of porosity. The Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids used in this research was a multigrade motor oil. The nested case-control design is an efficient method of sampling from a cohort that is increasingly used in cardiovascular research to study causal relationships. This methodology can be used to analyze data from large administrative databases to evaluate potential cardiovascular adverse effects of medications. Using a nested case-control approach, this study investigated whether amiodarone therapy for atrial fibrillation (AF) was associated with an increased risk of bradyarrhythmia requiring permanent pacemaker insertion. This previously unpublished adverse effect of amiodarone was evaluated in a province-wide database of Quebec residents with AF and a previous myocardial infarction. Although long distance aeromedical transport of cardiac patients occurs with increasing frequency, data regarding the incidence of complications are lacking and guidelines for air ambulance transport are nonexistent. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the safety of long distance aeromedical transport of cardiac patients, and to recommend a time frame for air ambulance transport of patients post myocardial infarction. An analysis of all long distance aeromedical transports performed by Montreal-based Skyservice Lifeguard from 9811/1 to 98110/1 is presented. 109 cardiac patients were transported; 83 by air ambulance and 26 commercially. The dietary outcomes of a school-based heart health promotion program in a low-income, multiethnic, inner-city neighbourhood of Montreal, Canada, were investigated. Eight intervention schools and sixteen control schools participated in the project from 1993 to 1997. Twenty-four hour recall data, as well as data on anthropometric and sociodemographic characteristics, were collected from a subsample of all students in grades 4--6 (aged 9--12 years) at baseline (n = 498), after two years (n = 491), and after four years (n = 347). Recent evidence indicates that CD8+ T cells may contribute significantly to pathogenesis in these conditions but the mechanisms by which CD8+ T cells induce damage remain to be established. To understand the mechanisms by which CD8+ T cells may induce nervous tissue injury in vivo, we study an animal model (referred to as L31) that spontaneously develops CD8+ T cell-mediated demyelination and axonal damage in the central nervous system (CNS). On August 18, 1990, President Bush signed into law the Oil Pollution Act (OPA), the most comprehensive federal legislation ever dealing with oil spill liability, compensation, prevention, response and research. Upper limits on shipowners and operators' liability are set under OPA, but are somewhat artificial and can be overidden by individual states choosing to impose unlimited liability. There is tremendous variation in how people orient toward their goal pursuits and these differences have traditionally been treated as stable traits. However, research in the related field of goal pursuit has demonstrated that the physical or merely symbolic presence of relationship partners can greatly influence which goals people are interested in pursuing. My coauthors and I tested and ultimately found support for the hypothesis that the social context would be similarly active in shaping how people approach their goals, that is, in shaping their motivational orientations. The thesis constitutes a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation into impulse breakdown voltage-time curves of coaxial-cylinder gaps in SF(,6) and a 50% SF(,6) - 50% N(,2) mixture. The breakdown time delay probability is treated as a bivariate distribution in statistical and formative time lags. A method is developed to deduce the marginal breakdown voltage probability curve from statistics of time delay. A computational and experimental study was made of the steady developing laminar convective heat transfer to viscous non-Newtonian fluids described by the power law model flowing in straight channels of circular and several non-circular cross-sections. In the numerical study the governing conservation equations in three dimensions subject to suitable boundary conditions were solved after appropriate discretization, using the Galerkin finite element method. Fourteen different cross-sectional geometries were studied numerically. Effects of temperature-dependent apparent viscosity, viscous dissipation as well as Prandtl number were included in the model. A general class of manipulators with hybrid kinematic chains is introduced. These manipulators are modular and can readily lead to kinematically redundant structures. Moreover, they may contain serial subchains as well as subchains of parallel modules, acting in parallel and connecting a base to a common end-effector. At the onset, a novel formalism is introduced to study modular kinematic structures. This includes some new concepts and definitions. The proposed formalism provides a systematic way to represent a complex hybrid manipulator through a hierarchy of its constituting modules. We have used Rousseau's Reveries du promeneur solitaire as foundation text in our research. Our corpus is comprised of two works by Gerard de Nerval: Sylvie and Promenades et Souvenirs, as well as George Sand's Lettres d'un voyageur; included also are some exerpts of her Correspondance. Depression is one of the most common forms of illness experienced worldwide and it has some of the most devastating human and economic consequences. Efforts to effectively prevent and treat depression are hindered, at least in part, by an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved in its onset.
