2022 — Multiple stressors: evaluating the effect of pollution, climate change and oceanographic processes in Tropical and Arctic seabirdsAbstract
Read more

2013 — Musical modernism at the people's theatre: Arthur Honegger and René Morax's «Judith» at the Théâtre du JoratAbstract
The Théâtre du Jorat was founded in 1908 by the playwright René Morax, in Mézières, a small village in the Swiss countryside. Influenced by Romain Rolland and Maurice Pottecher's populist theatrical enterprises, Morax created a people's theatre that the local inhabitants could not only identify with but also be involved with by actively participating in the various theatrical projects he produced. Morax's interest in music and his homeland's choral tradition led him to incorporate music into his theatrical concept. The prominence of music, and especially of the choir, in Morax's productions became one of their characteristic features. The Théâtre du … Read more

1987 — Recovery of pyrochlore from slimes discarded at Niobec by column flotationAbstract
The Niobec concentrator recovers niobium minerals (principally pyrochlore) from carbonate and silicate gangue. In the process some 15% of the Nb is rejected in a slimes ($-$10 $ mu$m) product. Recovery of pyrochlore from the slimes was studied. The study was performed using plant water which contained about 200 ppm Ca, 100 ppm Mg and variable quantities of organics as the main contaminants. Selective pyrochlore collectors and selective silicate depressants were evaluated. Four possible routes to float pyrochlore selectively were found. All routes required prior carbonate flotation. Carbonate flotation was attempted using fatty acids and sodium silicate dispersant (as conducted … Read more

1998 — "Centrifuge modelling of LNAPL transport in partially saturated granular mediumAbstract
This thesis presents the experimental modelling of Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids transport in partially saturated with water sand using centrifuge tests, which were carried out at the Geotechnical Centrifuge facility located at Delft Technical University (The Netherlands). The experimentation consisted of a two-dimensional three-phase flow (air, water, Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids) in an unsaturated sand for two values of porosity. The Light Non-Aqueous Phase Liquids used in this research was a multigrade motor oil. The modelling of a two-dimensional flow and the use of a transparent strongbox enabled the direct observations of the experiments. Scaling laws developed in connection with … Read more

2003 — Amiodarone and the risk of pacemaker insertion in elderly patients with atrial fibrillation : analysis of time-dependent exposure using nested case-control and survival analysis methodologiesAbstract
The nested case-control design is an efficient method of sampling from a cohort that is increasingly used in cardiovascular research to study causal relationships. This methodology can be used to analyze data from large administrative databases to evaluate potential cardiovascular adverse effects of medications. Using a nested case-control approach, this study investigated whether amiodarone therapy for atrial fibrillation (AF) was associated with an increased risk of bradyarrhythmia requiring permanent pacemaker insertion. This previously unpublished adverse effect of amiodarone was evaluated in a province-wide database of Quebec residents with AF and a previous myocardial infarction. We found that amiodarone use was … Read more

2013 — A modernist menagerie: representations of animals in the work of five North American PoetsAbstract
… Read more

1931 — The doctrine of the will as consent.Abstract
A word of explanation may be appropriate regarding the title chosen for this thesis. Its selection was made prior to the investigations which are embodied in the text, and was taken chiefly because it expressed a point of view regarding human motivation which seemed to hold possibilities of fruitful exploration. Much has been written about the will, in theology and moral philosophy, so that it seemed idle to add more words on a subject about which past controversy has chiefly succeeded in hanging a thick fog, unless some new way of piercing the gloom lay open. 2004 — Religion and the state in Ibn Khaldūn's MuqaddimahAbstract
This study is an attempt to gain a better understanding of Ibn Khaldun's political theory contained in The Muqaddimah from the stance that religion and his faith in Islam are at the core of his political theory. Though there is a great deal of scholarship that has been dedicated to the interpretation of Ibn Khaldun's political theory contained in The Muqaddimah, there are a limited number of works that deal exclusively with the role of religion in his conception of the State. Those that do tend to either exaggerate Ibn Khaldun's secular thought in the realm of politics or understate … Read more

2017 — Audio source separation via the grouping of partials in the sum-of-sinusoids modelAbstract
Read more

1956 — The role of certain factors in the crown and root diseases of red clover.Abstract
Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) is one of the most important of the true clovers. It has proved to be a very versatile species in its ability to adapt itself to a particular set of conditions, and a large number of races have been evolved within the species. Regional strains, which differ in productivity, winter hardiness, and disease resistance, have developed as a result of the selective action of local environmental conditions on this highly variable plant. 2010 — Mechanisms of demyelination and axonal damage in a CD8+ T cell-mediated model of spontaneous demyelinating diseaseAbstract
Autoimmune demyelinating diseases of the nervous system are a major cause for neurological impairment in humans. Recent evidence indicates that CD8+ T cells may contribute significantly to pathogenesis in these conditions but the mechanisms by which CD8+ T cells induce damage remain to be established. To understand the mechanisms by which CD8+ T cells may induce nervous tissue injury in vivo, we study an animal model (referred to as L31) that spontaneously develops CD8+ T cell-mediated demyelination and axonal damage in the central nervous system (CNS). In this project, we revealed that CD8+ T cells located in clusters at specific … Read more

On August 18, 1990, President Bush signed into law the Oil Pollution Act (OPA), the most comprehensive federal legislation ever dealing with oil spill liability, compensation, prevention, response and research. Upper limits on shipowners and operators' liability are set under OPA, but are somewhat artificial and can be overidden by individual states choosing to impose unlimited liability. Consequently, mutual insurance associations are refusing to provide the required financial guaranties needed to acquire the Certificates of financial responsibility, basing their refusal on an interpretation that OPA grants unlimited liability for oil pollution claims. The purpose of this thesis is to focus … Read more

2013 — Social evaluative context effects on motivational orientationsAbstract
There is tremendous variation in how people orient toward their goal pursuits and these differences have traditionally been treated as stable traits. However, research in the related field of goal pursuit has demonstrated that the physical or merely symbolic presence of relationship partners can greatly influence which goals people are interested in pursuing. My coauthors and I tested and ultimately found support for the hypothesis that the social context would be similarly active in shaping how people approach their goals, that is, in shaping their motivational orientations. Specifically we argue that the evaluative nature of the social context leads to … Read more

1981 — Impulse breatdown voltage-time characteristics of compressed SF6 and SF6-N2 insulationAbstract
The thesis constitutes a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation into impulse breakdown voltage-time curves of coaxial-cylinder gaps in SF(,6) and a 50% SF(,6) - 50% N(,2) mixture. The breakdown time delay probability is treated as a bivariate distribution in statistical and formative time lags. A method is developed to deduce the marginal breakdown voltage probability curve from statistics of time delay. The experimental work was performed on 2.54/7.0-cm diameter, 60-cm long coaxial-cylinder electrodes using SF(,6) or SF(,6)-N(,2) mixtures at pressures of 0.1 - 0.3 MPa subjected to 0.5/50-(mu)s and 1.2/50-(mu)s impulses of both polarities. The effect of a spherical conducting … Read more

1995 — Laminar heat transfer to viscous non-Newtonian fluids in non-circular ductsAbstract
A computational and experimental study was made of the steady developing laminar convective heat transfer to viscous non-Newtonian fluids described by the power law model flowing in straight channels of circular and several non-circular cross-sections. In the numerical study the governing conservation equations in three dimensions subject to suitable boundary conditions were solved after appropriate discretization, using the Galerkin finite element method. Fourteen different cross-sectional geometries were studied numerically. Effects of temperature-dependent apparent viscosity, viscous dissipation as well as Prandtl number were included in the model. The thermal boundary conditions tested were: uniform wall temperature and uniform wall heat flux … Read more

1995 — Kinematics of manipulators with parellelism, modularity and redundancy : analysis and designAbstract
A general class of manipulators with hybrid kinematic chains is introduced. These manipulators are modular and can readily lead to kinematically redundant structures. Moreover, they may contain serial subchains as well as subchains of parallel modules, acting in parallel and connecting a base to a common end-effector. At the onset, a novel formalism is introduced to study modular kinematic structures. This includes some new concepts and definitions. The proposed formalism provides a systematic way to represent a complex hybrid manipulator through a hierarchy of its constituting modules. Next, a formulation is devised to study the instantaneous kinematics of these manipulators. … Read more

2012 — A spatial history of Arena Rock, 1964-79Abstract
This dissertation traces a history of popular music and explores problems in social space theory from the perspective of the genre called Arena Rock. Many of the popular music practices between 1964 and 1979 have been the work of performers who attracted enormous live audiences, and the 1970s has been called "the age of the arena." Yet problems of live performance are neither confronted by the prevailing theories of social space nor adequately foregrounded in popular music historiography. The case of Arena Rock presents a unique opportunity to address these urgent historical and theoretical issues, because it marks the moment … Read more

The topic of this thesis is the romantic "promenade" as a literary theme in the works of two 19th century authors: Gerard de Nerval and George Sand. We have used Rousseau's Reveries du promeneur solitaire as foundation text in our research. Our corpus is comprised of two works by Gerard de Nerval: Sylvie and Promenades et Souvenirs, as well as George Sand's Lettres d'un voyageur; included also are some exerpts of her Correspondance. We discovered that the experience of Nerval's "promenade" equates to a quest for the past, for freedom and for Nature. He also seeks to escape mental sickness, … Read more

2021 — Pathways to depression: Identifying links between familial risk, stress, and abnormal neural response to rewardAbstract
Depression is one of the most common forms of illness experienced worldwide and it has some of the most devastating human and economic consequences. Efforts to effectively prevent and treat depression are hindered, at least in part, by an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms involved in its onset. A better understanding of who is at risk for the disorder and why they are at risk may allow us to develop more effective strategies for prevention and treatment. A recent shift in the science of psychopathology has occurred wherein efforts to better understand mental illnesses have begun to examine relatively homogeneous … Read more

2026 — Addressing Islamophobia in Quebec: The Need to Centre Lived Experiences and Correct Harmful MisconceptionsAbstract
Read more
